I've only heard this on the organ, specifically on early Spanish instruments, never for orchestra before. This is pretty cool. Reminds me of the adaptation done of the opening piece to Widor's Sixth Symphony for orchestra. I would love to learn to play this piece on the organ from memory one of these days, that is a dream of mine.
I think the picture depicts the aftermath of some battle. A soldier lies seriously wounded and his mates have come to see what they can do for him. A battalia (depending on which language the composer spoke) was a piece of music for a time of war.

I have never heard this piece for any instrument other than the organ. Jordi Savall has done something really wonderful here.
