Interesting that you should mention - I think Alkan and Prokofiev were similar in that their music can be rather more abstract.

@RollaArtis Some of his works are quite abstract, yes. Sorry, I was talking about tonality... The handcrossing near the end of Scherzo Focoso is about as dissonant as it gets with him (as far as I know).

actually, it's an etude. that's french for "study."

It's a piece that can be performed, but the true reason it was composed is for technical improvement on the piano.

Actually, I liked this very much!! Someone has the audacity to play Hamelin's etudes at the Tchaikovsky Competition, where newer music is usually not played. And the jury at this competition usually does not want to hear this type of music. Bold move!!
