Thanks for the comment. I really wish people today took more time to study what actually worked in the past ...... and especially WHY it worked. Tone is a big deal with me.
Favourite song from Cat Stevens. Great backup singers. You hardly hear that harmony and TONE from choirs any more. 1:47 to the end of the verse is a very good example. The tone especially I like but you can only hear that on 70's performances.
@navidhendrix ....yeah, totally agree, we've strayed from what's good....it's a real cesspool out there now in the musical mainstream.....sad.....very good point made about 70's performances.....thank you so much
My brother & sister went to school with Cat Stevens (Steven Georgeou,Greek Cypriot) at Hugh Myddleton secondary modern school in Clerkenwell Central London.
It's a pity the media have played the 'Islamic' card in relation to Yusuf. Before he was anything, he was a great human being with a beautiful soul and a great talent. I can remember playing this song at Catholic folk masses back in the early seventies. It is a song of praise for all life.
@MrBubbau812 What's your point? So was "Turn, Turn, Turn" by the Byrds. They also wrote songs about drugs. Also this is not one of his biggest hits, Cat had lots of hits. This was more of a album filler. Also just because he chose the muslim path doesn't mean he is anti-christian. That ignorance seems to spread faster than herpes in a whore house. The man is from England. He was brought up with christian values, and got his education from a christian society.
Oh how I have missed your words and songs and peace!!!!!!When your music stopped it was sadening and quite frankly I felt cheated your decision to leave and pursue your awakening and not share your beautiful music with me anymore. How selfish of me!!!!!! Yusuf THANK YOU for returning to me your music and love and light I LOVE YOU
The original pianist was Rick Wakeman whose usual incredible twiddly bits are sadly completely missing here!!
You can find Wakeman's version on YouTube - I couldn't work out how to post a link here, but it's worth looking for/listening too.
The Cat Stevens version of this song on iTunes download has both CS and Wakeman - again if you like the version in this video, it's definitely worth a download!
Cat Stevens, I danced to your music from the age of 4. And I love you now. This is the best version I've heard of this song. I don't care what you are called now, I don't care what people think about you. Ones you where all about music and it was true and from your heart, and i"ll always be grateful for that. Cause it made me the person I am today. Praise people singing together, praise music and every new morning. Praise every musician swimming into the stream of commerce.
This hymn is so beautifully symbolic of the newness and freshness I experienced when I was born again in Spirit!!!!! I had discovered it once before I was renewed but what I felt then was nothing compared to the pure joy this time from listening closely to the lyrics that "Nellie" Farjeon wrote (famous for her children's hymns and short stories). I just recently turned 20, so I know most who read this will write me of as crazy or even loathe me, but I do not want or need ur approval. God bless
THE most beautiful version ever. Cat is so emotionally invested, background singers' harmony is goosebump-giving, especially verse three. I am mesmerized. Thank you so much for posting and sharing with all of us.
I get misty eyed and break out in goose bumps when I hear this! The backup singers just put this over the top! If one looks at his face and body language, it's obvious it's a prayer straight form his beautiful heart. Simply beautiful! Thank you so much for posting!

esta hermosa canción me trae recuerdos tan lindos de ese tiempo de joven estudiante estando en el Salón grande de mi recordado SALESIANO DE VALDIVIA - CHILE
@blueblink88 Morning starts, or is born, with the sun's rising and it is the same sun as in the beginning of mankind in the Garden of Eden. Thus, claiming each morning as one's own, as a gift from God, seems in line with God's will for mankind from the beginning and now as well. I hope this helps.
I first heard this song when my Biblical Lit. teacher played it for the class (it was in '73 or "74). She was the sweetest, most loving, non-judgemental person. I fell in love with this song and she helped me to learn about the warm love of Jesus. She was my fav. teacher ever---Ms. Plassman! I'll never forget her or the song as long as I live. I, later, found the tune in a Lutheran Hymnal and was like--WOW!!! Cool!! GB!
un buen hombre...talentoso y sobre todo.,un canta autor humano, sensible.y sobre todo.,un poeta en todos los sentidos...gracias por ser parte del mundo y la humanidad.,steve...dios bendiga a nuestra humanidad.
this song is a very old tune it datesback to the late 18 or early 1900's but made big in mainstream by cat it can be found in alot of Baptist Hymnals . glory to God !!!
I grew up listening to Cat with my Dad.. may he rest in peace (my Dad) and know I am forever grateful that he appreciated great artist's like Cat Stevens and shared it with me.
I've always loved his version... only found out later that it was written long ago, as a church hymn. Here's what wiki says (but also I've sung it in church)
"Morning Has Broken" is a popular and well-known Christian hymn first published in 1931. It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and is set to a traditional Gaelic tune known as "Bunessan"
Awesome musician and poet. Makes me want to pick up the guitare and see how much of these songs my fingers remember after... can it really be 40 years? The messages have not lost any of their relevance.
I sincerely doubt that we'd have such petty criticism in the 70's (the time of this video). We've become a nation / world of nitpickers and naysayers, quick to find fault, reluctant to give praise. The song itself has become a "classic." Let the music speak for itself, please.
Recuerdo de mis tiempos de Tennager con mi novia Eneida Valverde escuchando esta cancion en Costa Rica, que bellos recuerdos. Aun te recuerdo con carino, Marco Arguedas.
No, it's because people are stupidly intolerant. If you stop and listen to the music, there are songs just as true and pure -- Where True Love Goes? from a man in his 60's is phenomenal. It's the optimism of youth, colored by the richness of experience -- life writ large. Music -- you have to listen to it -- it's not about talk.
The pianist, Jean Alain Roussel, joined Yusuf in concert in Paris on May 26 this year. The videos reveal a great concert, which Yusuf talks about on his website. Roussel still has a 'fro, it's just a little tamer now - like all of us. : )
i feel like this song and one other that you guys just wouldent know, make me feel alive whenever i hear them!any day i wake up,i hear this song in my head,if not in actuallity! i love CAT STEVENS music............................
why cant we all live in peace and love .. that was the message in that era, how i grew up.. we had beliefs and stuck together without violence, Cat Stevens sang alot of messages to us. We all have our opinions and beliefs, let us be. Not all that live in different cultures or countries are terrorist or evil.. come on.. wake up. Love instead of Hate, believe and let others believe, we live as one with different thoughts and beliefs ... so what.. its a blessing. i wish kids today could could.
Don’t ever don’t ever don’t ever don’t, try to play God, by judging and condemning anyone different from you for God has not given you the right to be mankind’s judge and jury Nor the power to know the ultimate Truth, or to tell others what they must do, Spread the seeds of love throughout the earth, Go and destroy the virus of hatred. Peace, Love, Unity & Respect.
Back in the 70's, I idolized him so much. I would come home from work and head right to the stereo and blast his songs in my house. He had such a sweet and gentleness when he sang Father and Son. While some of his other songs really rocked and were great also. JL.
@soosunny --'God's recreation of the new day'--I always loved the fact that our Father enjoys a little recreation time as much as we do. Have fun, enjoy. :D
I remember the first time i heard this song. I was in second grade.and even then it put the zap on me. The beauty of it just sent me to some kind of higher level.A place where you go when you hear or see some thing amazingly beautiful
Thanks for the comment. I really wish people today took more time to study what actually worked in the past ...... and especially WHY it worked. Tone is a big deal with me.

Cat Stevens is one of my biggest influences.
I'm a musician playing kind of similar music, struggling to get the word out.
If you feel like it, check out a song of mine, called "Live A Little" at my channel.
I could really use some constructive critique.
I hope you don't mind me informing you, cheers! :)

why cant we all live in peace and love .. that was the message in that era, how i grew up.. we had beliefs and stuck together without violence, Cat Stevens sang alot of messages to us.

Cat Stevens singing this beautiful, gentle song makes me think maybe there really is a God out there. Such is the power of music.

JL.

This is my anthem to herald the Sabbath.
Why worship God ? because He created us.
The story is recreated every week...

@soosunny --'God's recreation of the new day'--I always loved the fact that our Father enjoys a little recreation time as much as we do. Have fun, enjoy. :D

If people listened to what he is saying, then and now, it is only for peace in the world, and in our hearts.
