Even RAND corp. admits that 1.3:1 was more like it, at least against "honchos". Makes more sense, really, since the Soviet detachment in Korea consisted of hand-picked pilots, led by Ivan Kozhedub, a WWII ace with.. what, 62 kills?
The .50 machine gun were good to destroy weak japaneses built planes with no armor, but not very efficient against the strong full metal built MiG, that's why there is no more .50 as main canon armament since the Korean War, late F-86 got 20mm canons to match the powerful 23 and 37mm of the MiGs.
One 37mm hit could destroy a Saber, but sometime the entire load of ammunition of the F-86 was not enough to shot the MiG.
Not as powerfull, but a couple of 20mm hits were more than enough to down any light fighter like the Mig-15 and also allowed to carry more ammo than those Migs could.
Also since the Mig-15 was an interceptor the 37mm was destined to be used against heavy bombers like the B-29. Not against fighters.
forgive me for sounding like a nerd but americans didn't have 20mm cannons on their sabres for ages. The Austrailians wanted more speed and the six standard guns the americans had were taking up to much space and weight for a more powerful engine so we basicly ripped em out, installed the engine then bolted on 30mm cannons, resulting in a faster and more heavilly armed plane. search for "CAC Avon sabre" if you don't belive me. PS yanks don't always know best, that's just the ego talking.
But the slow 37mm cannon was useless since it couldnt hit anything. no gun radar at all in the MiG.
The 50 cal in the Sabre was no good you say. But it was good enough to get a 10:1 kill ratio over the MiG's! That is Americas best kill ratio from an operational fighter during wartime.
Other technical advantages the F-86 Sabre USAF pilots had over the Mig-15 Communist air-force pilots are their aeroplanes' gunsights and armament: the Mig-15's gunsight was inferior to the F-86's sight and the heavy-calibre, slow-firing cannon unsuitable for fighter-to-fighter dogfights. This would have been more good news for the USAF pilots in Korea.
The Russians did not have pressurised G-suits! That would have been excellent news for the USAF pilots that confronted the Mig-15 pilots. That's one big advantage in the favour of the US F-86 Sabre pilots. If the US pilots knew this, and they probably did, I am sure that they would have been delighted. Any advantage one can get over one's enemy is always welcome and good.
Mig15. A superior fighter but not fitted with the best of gun sights. And its powerful but slow firing cannon were best suited to shooting down bombers -not so good for dogfights.
MiG 15 not superior. The Sabre was faster in level flight and in a dive (the MiG climbed faster), could out-turn a MiG at low altitude (the MiG turns better high up), and had better range so it could stay up much longer. And the MiG was tail heavy which caused it to go into spins during heavy maneuvers.
The year 1949 marked the starting point of a creative collaboration between the Sokol Plant and the Design Bureau of Artem Mikoyan. The first aircraft that resulted was the MiG-15, designed by Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurvich.

All the MIGs were better than F planes. MIG15 was better than F 86 MIG 21 was vay better than F4 MIG 29 have 50 to 1 kill ratio in the dogfight with F 16 and some American experts even think that MIG 29 is as good as F15 or maybe even better than F 15. You are so full of shit! The F-16 has a current kill ratio of 70:0. The Falcon and MiG29 have only met in ariel combat once and the F-16 won via AIM9. F-16s, F-15s, and F-14s have tallied 323 air to air kills combined TO DATE all at the loss of only two F-14s. How can you say soviet aircraft are better when they haven't shot down an American aircraft in succession since Vietnam? The F-15 alone has shot down nearly everything the russians have made. Captain Merza detected the F-16s at a distance of 25 km and brought down two F-16s with R-23 (AA-7 "Apex") missiles (one from 9 km and another within the distance of 7 or 8 km) before he himself was shot down" Ther are many more killes of F16 and F 18 by MIG23 . Statement that all of "Mig's" in Korean war were used by "experienced wwII soviet pilots" is just not true ,in fact Soviet pilots were introduced in Korean war much later ,after NK 2 week trained pilots were getting killed almost daily by professional trained pilots of USA....
Soviet pilots proved that Mig15 in hand's of expert pilot is better tool than Sabre making rating 4 killed Sabre vs 1 Mig15, but there was only few Soviets pilots involved in Korea war

Soviet's didn't wanted to start nuclear war with US ,because of Korea ,,and because of that only handful of Soviet pilots were present in Korea war.Soviet pilot's had order that in case of been shot down over hostile territory ,they had to kill them self ,and not to fell in enemy hands!And most of Soviet pilots never went to "engage" enemy.
Most of Mig pilots were mostly 2 week trainees from Korea ,that proved to be "easy meat" for US Pilots...

10 to 1, 12 to 1.. Numbers seem to change every day and become more suspect every time. Sometimes I get the impression that 10:1 was a ratio versus target drones. Even RAND corp. admits that 1.3:1 was more like it, at least against "honchos". Makes more sense, really, since the Soviet detachment in Korea consisted of hand-picked pilots, led by Ivan Kozhedub, a WWII ace with.. what, 62 kills?

The .50 machine gun were good to destroy weak japaneses built planes with no armor, but not very efficient against the strong full metal built MiG, that's why there is no more .50 as main canon armament since the Korean War, late F-86 got 20mm canons to match the powerful 23 and 37mm of the MiGs.
One 37mm hit could destroy a Saber, but sometime the entire load of ammunition of the F-86 was not enough to shot the MiG.

Not as powerfull, but a couple of 20mm hits were more than enough to down any light fighter like the Mig-15 and also allowed to carry more ammo than those Migs could.
Also since the Mig-15 was an interceptor the 37mm was destined to be used against heavy bombers like the B-29. Not against fighters.

forgive me for sounding like a nerd but americans didn't have 20mm cannons on their sabres for ages. The Austrailians wanted more speed and the six standard guns the americans had were taking up to much space and weight for a more powerful engine so we basicly ripped em out, installed the engine then bolted on 30mm cannons, resulting in a faster and more heavilly armed plane. search for "CAC Avon sabre" if you don't belive me. PS yanks don't always know best, that's just the ego talking.

The 50 cal in the Sabre was no good you say. But it was good enough to get a 10:1 kill ratio over the MiG's! That is Americas best kill ratio from an operational fighter during wartime.

The Russians did not have pressurised G-suits! That would have been excellent news for the USAF pilots that confronted the Mig-15 pilots. That's one big advantage in the favour of the US F-86 Sabre pilots. If the US pilots knew this, and they probably did, I am sure that they would have been delighted. Any advantage one can get over one's enemy is always welcome and good.

MiG 15 not superior. The Sabre was faster in level flight and in a dive (the MiG climbed faster), could out-turn a MiG at low altitude (the MiG turns better high up), and had better range so it could stay up much longer. And the MiG was tail heavy which caused it to go into spins during heavy maneuvers.
