a problem with a lot of bands now is that they want to affect people, but they use half baked conceptual approaches and a retrospective attitude to pop. this music could have made in the 60's or 70's, but it has no retrospective element. it's folk music i guess. it transmits something to us. that has longevity.
if you can't convince your own brain to be this much into the song, you can't ever be a successful singer and/or actor. Not saying his soul is acting, but letting yourself being this affected by your own music is a choice you make that improves the quality of your singing / acting.
