  • Per Wikipedia: "The song, co-written by the singer, told a story of a woman who "works hard for [her] money". It was based on an actual encounter that Summer had with an exhausted bathroom attendant."

  • It's a news flash for men who come home from work, sit on their butts all evening and complain because the house is so messy.

  • I swore a white person sang this song... not surprised

  • Lol so on top of everything in this video, she has to deal with Donna Summer stalking her

  • LOL yeah I remember when McD's remade this song. haha! I was like a little 1st grader back then.

  • A gem thats not overplayed. Good video too. Was this in a movie??

  • @stuh1975 You kidding? This is one of the most overplayed songs of all time. It was even in a McDonalds commericial.

  • Kind of looks like Rick James to me...=D

  • she was inspired to write this song when she seen a bathroom attendant in a restaraunt

  • Happy birthday and happy new year.

  • Happy Birthday Donna! You worked hard for your money.

  • Donna Summer kinda looks like Rick James in this video. LOL

  • Donna Summer the ultimate diva of the 70s and 80s! I smell the summer of 1983. Can't believe it's been 28 years since i first heard this song over the radio and keeps ringing in my ears 'till i got to like the song! I dedicate this to my late mother who worked so damn hard to raise us! Ur my hero mom, i love u fr d bottom of my heart 4ever, mwah ;-)

  • Ahhh..the Sweet Summer of 1983!!! WOW! What a Summer! :)

  • I believe every working woman is worthy of respect. That stated, I don't believe that, if a woman is having a bad day, she should be allowed to bring a bad attitude home and use it against her kids. That's bad. Just keep that in mind.

  • Shoutout to all the people working in retail working hard for the money on the holidays. No time off and no enjoyment of the season.

  • Those dancers look like the Village People in drag.....

  • I thought this song was about prostitution

  • She is like kelly rowland's face

  • @4200Cruzito i fk wish too, mate!!!!

  • A women works hard for her money to bring better for her famaily just as men do.Bettr then staying home playing with puzels or drinking coffee or eatting candy.

  • The lyrics are so simple yet so meaningful.

  • So Kelly Rowland did have a hit song once..

  • @whayes8084

    Hahahahahahahaha, good point :)

Indeed, physiognomy is striking, no doubt about it !

  • No husband paying her ladies-who-lunch lifestyle? She kicked 1,000 nice guys to the curb who treated like gold. Instead, she always went with that bad boys who treated her like she deserved. Now the nerds she dissed have upgraded to under-age-30-trophy-wives while she bloats and reaps what she sowed. Revenge is a dish best served up cold. Women wind up where they deserve. Reserve your sympathy for those who deserve it, like her kids living lousy lives bc their mom was a treacherous, selfish b.

  • @jkirk1626 say who? Some are treated respectly.Kind and deserve to be done that way.

  • at 2:14 she's totally thinking "why didnt i just get those abortions?"

  • @Temp144

What a terrible thing to say or even think.

  • @Temp144 lmao. That's when alittle home training needs to kick in...

  • @Temp144

LOL. the world would much in such a better shape if some nutcases had not banned it for so many years....oh wait it's about to be banned again...here comes Mr Private Equity I don't pay taxes mitt rom.ey

  • Thumbs UP UP UP if u remember this on MTV and simply think this is an AWESOME CLASSIC!! :-)

  • those kids needed a beating

  • Comment removed

  • thumbs up if you didn't come here for a reason besides the fact that its a great song.

  • @ImogenfanGrl shut the fuck up with that corny bullshit...

jus fuckin listen and close ur goddamned mouth

  • @teknashend woah bud rude much? it was a comment that had nothing to do with you. So just go back to your pathetic life sitting at home alone having nothing better to do than be rude to people on youtube of all places.

  • @ImogenfanGrl o come on... just shut the fuck up... please

  • @teknashend See your insults are just getting lamer because you know i'm right. I'm sorry for your pathetic life and i wish you all the best.

  • 4 jobs why :(

  • ha ha this was the song that Fran was singing

  • Thunbs up if the simpsons brought you here.

  • Homer works hard for the money!

  • Makes me think of Kelly Bundy from Married With Children xD Awesome song! A classic!

  • thats a man baby!

  • i think that she looks a LOT like kelly roland

  • thumps up if you come here because of south park when cartmen sang this for the cheesy poofs commecial?

  • I'm a guy and I love this song. A true classic with a message. My respect and appreciation for all the gals that work hard for the money.

  • ROFL @ how donna summer was stalking her and then bangs the door after the lady discovers the messy house and no kids. ahahaha

  • We need more songs today that have messages like this.

  • she looks like kelly roland!!!

  • @gaycokun HELL NO! kelly rowland looks like HER!

  • She should give up all the jobs and become a dancer. It appears that is the only thing she is good at (Even if she did struggle to stay on her feet in the diner).

I feel at the end she was so happy she just danced towards the horizon and just left the annoying kids to fight it out...either that or she got arrested for jaywalking.

  • @lee8kinders that's the whole point of the video. She had to quit being a dancer to raise her kids. Didn't you see the picture of her as a younger woman who was dancing? By the way, that really is a picture of the woman playing the part. Unfortunately even if she did try she's too old to be a dancer at that age.

  • @lasktguy I assumed that was her lesbian partner who left her with the kids and forced her to take on all the jobs.

  • @lukejali now that would have made the story more interesting, but unfortuately no it's not.

  • I don't recommend those sewing techniques.

  • »She Works Hard For The Money«... things back then were saying SOMETHING... These days I can't even understand what they're saying!!!

  • I work very hard for the money, like I also study a lot for one day to finally work on a job that I truly enjoy! I just got back from work and the sun is almost coming out =) yehhhhhhhhhhhh, I will only sleep like 3 hours, but so what, I enjoy working and saving up for the future. I am doing all of this for a greater purpose, not just doing all of this for the heck of it. Keep working hard women and don't make your life harder than it already is. Remember that is society is dominated by males

  • @Scorpiusgrl Fvck you biach. I did the same shit and made the same sacrifices in college. In fact I did it twice, because I went back to get my Graduate Degree. Now I am staring at $46k in repayment loans!

  • @MPA2000 hehehe, why biach? Are you a male that works hard for the money? I don't doubt that because I know males work hard either at work or trying to achieve a greater education too. Many men and women sacrifice to have a better life, I am aware of that. Since this is a song about hard working women, then the message I wrote is obviously referred to women only, so don't get offended because I said that this society is dominated by males. Even though it is, it doesn't mean that males

  • achieve their goals without sacrificing, working full time and getting in debt with loans. I am getting in debt with loans too, and it sucks because Superior education here in the U.S. should be free, not something to get yourself into debts. then when you finish your education and start your career, you want to buy a house or apartment and you have a 50K debt, plus with a house you'll get into a bigger debt for around 30 yrs. How depressing to think that you have a career to just pay bills

  • instead of actually enjoying life. That is life now, do you want that kind of life where you just just work to pay bill after bill and die paying bills?

  • I work hard for the money, so hard for the money, i something something money, come on give me lots of money

  • she looks like Kelly Rowland in this vid.

  • .. the chinese version is "she works hard for the money, dont let her jump out the window"

  • She works hard for the money--->(Money can make everything)...

  • me recuerda cuando era un crio, veia este video y me daban ganas de bailar,yo queria ser donna summer

  • Donna Summer is a GODDESS!

  • Donna said in an interview that she wrote this song after seeing a female bathroom attendant at a posh restaurant.

  • NICE....HAPPY SUNDAY TO ALL WHO WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY....hahaha

  • I <3 Her still =)

  • she's disco quenn and this song rocks !!

  • I USE TO HAVE A MAD CRUSH ON THIS WOMAN AS A CHILD GROWING UP, LOVE YOU DONNA SUMMER

  • I love this song soo much this song is BOSS :)

  • This is my first time seeing this video, I always thought this song was about a stripper/prostitute.lol

  • que chafa

  • I always tear up when I see this video. It's well produced and actually tells a poignant story.

Compare to the stupid pseudo-ghetto guy yelling at you over sampled music from someone else. That's what passes for "talent" and "music" these days - Feh!

And Georgio Moroder's painstaking backing tracks were priceless.

I wonder what happened to the main actress... and the director!

  • 80"s RULES AND ROCKS

  • yeah they work hard for the money on their knees, they do nothing and deserve nothing divorce us and take half our money. thats y they r only good to bang and throw em away.

  • One of the best songs from Donna Summer for me!!!!

  • Put Donna summer in she is the queen of disco, she charted 23 # 1 hits on the billboard disco/dance charts over 25 years. she has a total of 32 # 1 hits combined. In 2008, she became the only artist to have a number 1 dance hit in every decade since the 1970s. She is the only artist to date to have three number one double albums in a row. donna summerrock and roll hall of fame 2012

  • This is one of the greatest videos of the 1980s.....period.

  • she should have hauled off and BELTED that asshole who grabbed her ass!

  • @betterinformed - The point was that she had to subjugate her personality to cater to customers, demanding and low-brow as they may be. Part of the pathos of this video.

  • I'm probably one of the only 14 year olds that loves Donna Summer and jams out to her music.

  • A great pop song with a social message. The video much much acclaimed at the time and you can see why. An incredibly talented( but severely underrated) singer and song writer. Just look up her early disco stuff ( could it be magic, love to love to ) to pounding rock ( bad girls, hot stuff) to gospel ( forgive me, i believe in jesus) to country and western ( starting over again).

  • who are the 82 idiots who disliked this!? i lost my virginity 2 this song!

  • @KietsuHayabusa OMG that is nice and the first time ive heard that one

  • 80 people never worked hard for their money

  • This music video moves me into tears, simply because my mom used to have almost the same scenario as in this video. But awesome music video non of the less

  • Its simply a song to help respect women working n achieving high or low standards

  • Donna Summer stalking her isn't making her life easier! jk lol! I love this song! Coming from a single parent household, that woman reminds me of my mom.Fortunately she didn't have to work multiple jobs but it was a struggle nonetheless to raise me and my sis alone.Me and my sis are guilty of acting like the bratty kids in the vid once in a while and looking back I wish I behaved better and helped out alot more. Now I appreciate everything my mom did and still does for me today.

  • @2Kriss2Kross your mom is as good as mine.... you lived the same reality though we live in different countries.Regards to you and your mother from Chile.

  • @estelokillo Awesome! Thank you and regards to you and your mother also!

  • Me gusta Donna Summer, she makes me remember a lot things

I like Donna Summer me hace recordar muchas cosas.

  • Happy labor day to all who work hard and are not treated right.

  • omg she looks like Kelly

  • @LuxuriousLuxembourg im glad im not the only one who thinks so

  • Donna is awesome in this video. I used to dislike much of the 80s when I was growing up in the 90s but not anymore, for example this is a song I now love!

  • Married with Children brought me here xD Great song! :D

  • When in doubt, dance in the streets.

  • something something give me lots of honey

  • Русский язык-совсем другая акустика (похожа на немецкий),если перевести-восприятие другое.Английский-звучит плавнее и песни воспринимаются здесь без понимания слов.

  • Women do work hard for the money and thats why we want a decent man who appreciates what we do for them with it because it could be over

  • I actually felt sorry for this woman in the video!I mean she's a single mother working 3 jobs just to support two children that have no idea what she goes through everyday just for them!I bet if they had to go and work with her they would understand and be more appeciative of her and stop leaving messes for her to clean up.

  • My friend Jimmy's father was a cop in Dorchester and let me tell you Donna was arrested ocassionally as a working girl before so made it famous lmao. Don't get me wrong I love Donna Summer just sayin lol

  • how the FUCK can you dis this lady .

  • 78 stories in a very bitter city

  • Been there, done that!

  • idiot

  • Shit....We do work hard for the money! The anthem!!

  • Treat all people right if they're right towards you - if somebody missed the message. Even the people you pretend not to see. Treat them right.

  • he works haaaaard for the pu**y... so haaaard for the pu**y... :( so you beeetteeer treat US right, you f-ing who*es!!!!!!

  • What does this song mean?

    Thank you!

  • chef d oeuvre des années 80 ! merci donna summer pour ce monument ! j adore !!!

  • you can't beat her. :-)

  • So did I. It was never appreciated so I kicked the loser out. Don't be so gullible girlfriends. I am doing great without the crap now :)

  • that stupid choreography that stars at 3:00 killed the mood ...

  • @mava96 - I disagree. It completed the message by showing how many women in different walks of life do the same thing. Everything from Dr's to hard-hats "work hard for the money."

    So... treat them right!

  • I'm Rick James Bitch.

  • Donna Summer really looks a lot like Kelly Rowland in this video! :O Of course Rowland isn't as good as Summer :P

  • cartman from southpark sings it well beter...

  • My mother works hard for the money. I love her.

  • What happened to all the GREAT music/songs like this?!

  • Grammy Gamby works hard fer the money because she needs ter get ter Oregon.

  • I Lowe You 80

  • was this like some kind of Thriller inspired dance at the end??

  • I Love this song and the choreography! Donna is still the Queen of Disco <

  • @RunwayBrandon I too, love the choreography because I can see the merger of two styles. I can see the classic ballet positions and turns and the modern jazz style which make for an incredible dance scene. Not only that, I can see that these dancers are incredibly well trained. Look how turned out they are and how well they finish each move. Awesome. I thought I was the only who could see the beauty of the segment.

  • the best!!.....=)

  • 1983? 1984? I used to listen to it a lot in my childhood! Thanks mom!

  • why doesnt she use the mop?

  • when in doubt...FLASH MOB

  • i wonder what the story is behind the person who wrote this song.i bet it's interesting:)

  • @sesabio This song was actually written by Donna Summer herself, the inspiration was a cleaning lady she ran into while cleaning the bathroom at a party (I think after the Grammys), and the title hit her 'she works hard for the money'. Donna was supposed to play the lead in the video but the director decided to go for someone more 'ordinary jane' and less pretty or distinct as Donna as

  • @kewlnim Hey!this IS very interesting.thanks amigo.

  • @kewlnim - I thought the leading lady was great. She is obviously a real dancer. The shot where she gazes at her younger photo is so touching!

I wonder what happened to the actress... and the director!

  • I was born in the wrong year. I should've been born in the 80's. Except I was born in the 90's. Sigh.
