Everyone has the wish I believe in going back into time and just standing next to Vincent Van Gogh and watching him paint. I like this 'imaginative' film because it starts this process.... Also the paintings become the backgrounds and they remain true to his colors. Enjoyment, thanks.
Andy Powell (International Artist Painter and poet).......if you do a general search you will find lots maybe content for another film ,if you watch London skys section my email is at the end, Andy
This episode is OK. I love Van Gogh's art and can't really hate something that showcases it. I still feel thought that the film went downhill from this point on, though I don't hate the film by any means. I found Scorsese's performance a bit mannered and distracting. I also felt this segment was in the wrong place in the film. Mt. Fuji in Red and Weeping Demon should have followed The Tunnel, with Crows and The VIllage closing out the film. I watch in this order on DVD, much more effective
There are many different explanations as to why he cut his ear off.
One is that he did it in rage after a fight with his artist friend Gaugin.
I don't think he cut it off as a gift to his mistress.
When one consideres the fact that he suffered from a serious mental illness and spent much of his later life in hospitals, it's more likely to assume a psychotic episode as the main reason for his self mutilation.
vincent gogh might be the best colorest that ever lived, his paintings are highly original and vibriant. He was an artistic genius, suffering something in his soul. Once in a while we get a great genius like this. Too sad, each has such problems with pain and suffering something in their soul just tears them a part. Too bad it gogh had to suffer like this.
I believe that was intentional, there is a very popular belief that Van Gogh was most likely bipolar. And so Scorsese is portraying a man who is manic, the phase when Van Gogh was most likely to paint. :)
This is such a cruel world for artists, they would not listen perhaps they never will...

Esplêndido, a fotografia dessa cena é inacreditável. Tenho cá com os meus botões que Sonhos é uma jóia de rara beleza lapidada por Kurosawa

Funny how people made fun of him, just as I'm sure they did like in the film. And where are they now...oblivion.
jeffreycollins 1 year ago
this video is incorrect. vincent cut off his ear in winter and its obvious it's summer in the movie.
TheArtHistory 1 year ago
it's not supposed to be real, it's a DREAM. Hence the title of the film DREAMS.

not sure the ear part is totally factual...

Yeah, he didn't cut his ear off because of what he said in the movie. He actually cut it off as a gift to his mistress.
