Yes Punjabi is also very expressive, infact my mother language is Punjabi and I can speak Punjabi in true Malwa accent, But Punjabi lacks sweetness of Urdu and borrows Persian words for illustrative purpose, as does Urdu. For example read of Waris Shah, most of words are from Persian.

This is the "main poem" by Sahir Ludhianvi. I say so because the title of his book "TalkhiaN" comes from this poem.

This is the only piece of poetry that I have heard in the original voice of Sahir Ludhianvi. It is amzing. It is great, awsome ! In one of the comments on this video some one had asked the person posting it, how did he manage to get this rare Gem. It appears that this questions remains unanswered. Any how,

I think that Sahir Ludhianvi recorded this poem not for the film but on another occasion. There is a general worldwide trend to "copyright" every thing, rightly or wrongly. A wrong copyrighting may have legal remedies. This type of literary, cultural, artistic and now historical, treasure, is part of the HERITAGE OF MANKIND. Its relaying canot be limited.

I think that Urdu poetry is one of the most beautiful things in this world. Poetry, as such, is not much followed in India, Urdu poetry even less. There had been some innovative initiatives in India to promote Urdu like usage of Devnagri script. However it has not had the desired effect.

it will not have any effect ever. if you could write urdu its like short hand writing. plus the pronounciation cant be correct if you write it in devnagri. when you say urdu is becoming more and more arabic like its because what you have listen as urdu is common language which is being spoken by general people otherwise real urdu is more towards farsi and arabic. if you have been to some registrar in north india? or in court still they use old urdu words. you will understand it there :)

I dont know what planet you are living on! The metropolitan cities of Delhi, Bombay are no doubt reeling in the influence of rock pop and filmi culture but there are pockets of high culture in Agra Lukhnow and Bhopal Allhabad etc which still revel in poetry and classical music Ghazlas etc

I can not but agree with Rajputb. Urdu grammer and sentence formation is exactly same as Hindi. After the partition Pakistan has tried to Parsianise or Arabise Urdu and India has Sanskritised Hindi widening the divide between the two. I do not any formal education of Urdu. I can not read the script but can understand almost 100% of old PTV dramas (Dhoop Kinare, Tanhaiyan ..). It is most unfortunate that Urdu is getting sidelined in India owing to reasons well known to all of us (contd...)

I speak fluent Hindi and Urdu. Historically, Urdu is a mix of Hindi and Farsi (Persian)/Arabic which came to India with invasions from the western front. Thats why its hard to distinguish between Hindi and Urdu. The most common language (ususally called Hindi ) spoken in India today is the language of Bollywood and popular media, which primarily is a mix of Hindi (Sanskrit based), Farsi/Arabic and English. So its right to say that Bollywood language is more of Urdu then Hindi.

There is also a geographical twist to this language story. The Hindi spoken in the eastern parts of pre independence era (Bengal, Bihar, UP etc) has lesser influence of Farsi, compared to the western parts (today's Pakistan).

Its quite unfortunate that languages get associated with religions, eg Hindi/Sanskrit with Hindus, Urdu with Muslims, Punjabi with Sikhs (atealst in India) and so on.

I have read Sahir's books and he is one of my favourites.But I have been told that he was in love with the playback singer Sudha Malhotra who was his college mate in Govt college Ludhiana.They were good friends but she couldn't marry him because parents didn't agree. In "Jharoke se" he wrote " Dam hai tho maa-baap se baghavat kar le,vagharna woh jahan chahe vahan shaadi kar le". Even sudha has confessed about her love affair with the poet in a radio interview.

No it is completely wrong. Urdu does have some Persian words, because it is a mixture of Persian and Indian culture. and it happened very recently compared to Sanskrit, which is very old. There are only few words which are similar in Sanskrit and Persian, not in grammar at all. which of course reached there by travellers and ancient India were stretched up to Afghanistan.There is no necessary to come everything from west, it can be vice versa..which makes more sense.

Language don't matter its the the beauty of how the poet make selection of words for a poem.

I Don't know much about hindi but Urdu is mixture mainly farsi and arabic with some words from sunskirit. If you notice all the movie singers and TV artist prounounace words like Phir and Pathr like Urdu and a coomon person will say these words as fir and fathir.

You couldn't be more wrong. Urdu was born in India and is 80%, if not more, Hindi. Open any Urdu dictionary and see the source of various words. Persians and Arabs can probably read (but not understand) it as it's the same script. Urdu poetry has more Persian and Arabic words than you would hear in spoken Urdu. But that's what makes Urdu poetry so amazingly beautiful, especially 18th and 19th century Ghazals.

In hindi film industry most of the writers and poets are Muslims and they are actually writing it in urdu but media says it is hindi ..

I agree about Bollywood song writers writing in Urdu. Most of them are or were Urdu poets first and song writers second. As I said, check any Urdu dictionary. Most word's origin is Hindi and no, spoken Hindi is not becoming more inclined toward Urdu. If anything, it's getting more Sanskaritized thanks (or no thanks) to the Shudh Hindi movement, which was probably aimed to take it away from Urdu. And since when Wikipedia became a referencing authority?

As you have admitted that there are programs to make hindi more and more distinctive from urdu proves my point that hindi is inclined towards urdu. Again I am repeating my self being lived in Iran and Arab countries and I also know urdu very well, Urdu is mostly persian and arabic. There seems 2 b some confusion b/w "influence" and "roots". Urdu has Persian influence and that 2 only in vocabulary and some poetic forms. A language is much more than that, grammar, sentence structure, pronouns, etc. all of which (and most vocabulary) is from Old Hindi (Khari Boli, Brij Bhasha). greatsequence seems to be referring to Modern Hindi, which is a recent concoction, created from Urdu by systematically replacing Persian and Arabic words with Sanskarit words. (cont. below)

This was done toward the middle to end of 19th century when British wanted Indians to have 2 languages, 1 for Hindus and 1 for the rest of Indians and were looking for a script (other than Arabic) for the new language.

Devnagri script was ultimately selected but even Roman script was considered. Until then what we call Urdu now was known as Hindi, Hinduvi, Hindustani, Dakhanni, Rekhta or Zuban-e-Urdu-e-Muela. The name Urdu came from the last one. (cont. below)

Some relevant books on this topic are History of Urdu Literature by Graham Bailey, Early Urdu Literary Culture and History by Shamsur Rahman Faruqi (also available in Urdu) and One Language, Two Scripts by Christopher King. The fact that colloquial Urdu and Hindi are overwhelmingly similar is not because of Bollywood's popular Urdu songs. It's because the two languages used to be (are still) one and the same, that is, colloquially. This was my point to begin with.

True Urdu does drive from Sanskrit as does Hindi but is written in a different form then other South Asian Languages. It also has many words (only the religious ones are Arabic) from Farsi. So it's more Farsi & Sanskrit & less Arabic (hence why it's more poetic than it's sister language Hindi).

This is from Sahir Sahib whom I knew quite well. He was India's Faiz.India has had several great poets viz. Sahir Ludhianvi, Shakeel Badayuni, Shamim Jaipuri, Firaq Gorakhpuri, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Kaifi Azmi etc. etc. Thank God that the partition did not destroy the culture. On both side of the border there are wonderful poets, composers, singers.

Thanks for sharing this lovely Sahir poem.This is not a poem by Faiz--it was written by Sahir and appears either in his first anthology, 'TalkhiyaaN' or his 2nd one 'ParchhaiyaaN'.I have 'Kuliyaat-e-Sahir' in Urdu(Complete works of Sahir) as well as Faiz's complete works--'NusKhahaa-e-wafaa' and have grown up reading both of them in Urdu. I know for sure it is a famous Sahir poem and am surprised someone can ascribe it to Faiz.
