what i dont understand is why they refuse to use the old story lines. they were awesome, i've just been reading City of the Damned, Caligula, Block mania and the apocalypse war, all of the stories were better than anything Hollywood has produced in 20 years, but the original stories are always scrapped in favor of some instantly forgettable clone of the last action movie/franchise rape - and stop telling me "its is gonna be darker" theres no darkness in superhero movies - otherwise they'd be 18s
I liked the first "Judge Dredd" movie, for what it was it was pretty good, if you ignored the comics continuity and just took it at face value ( for people who've never read 2000 AD). This new Dredd will probably be a lot darker in atmosphere, to match the times we're living in.
@raigekiman Thankfully not. The Stallone shambles was an atrocity which bore only the most superficial resemblence to 2000AD's Judge Dredd. Hopefully this 'reboot' will capture some of the characterization, cynicism, & dystopian bleakness of the original stories.
Wouldn't it be cheaper for the film studio to line all the Judge Dredd fans and one by one kick them in the nuts rather than the metaphorical nut kicking there movie's give us, I mean it must take a lot of effort to mess up all the designs, change the uniform, make his helmet the size of a beach ball, The line of nut kicking, far cheaper.
Seems people are taking Dredd's judging skills in the comments here... I've never been a huge fan of Dredd (It was always one of the comics in 2000AD I used to skip over in order to find Strontium Dog, ABC Warriors, Nemesis and Slaine), but from what I see, I LIKE what they've done. They've given the classic "Dirty Harry" Dredd from the 70's, rather than the GRIM DORK Dredd from the late 80's onwards. Why complain before you've given it a chance? I'll watch it and then give my verdict.
@makingitupforever I was always a Rogue Trooper kid myself, but honestly its could hardly be worse than the Stallone version. I'm actually looking forwards to this and seeing what they do with the character this time around. I like Dredd as a character who has evolved almost in real time, with the decades the character has been around actually being taken into account in the comics so that in cannon, Dredd is about 70 years old and still kicking ass.
NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO....I grow up reading 2000AD and this look's REAL BAD, and i don't mean the good kind of bad i mean the BAD kind of BAD!. don't get me wrong, i do like Karl but he would not be my first choice to play Dredd. Helmet TOO big, gun TOO small!.
Dont like what I'm seeing here...anything I'm seeing! Actor wrong - check, costume wrong - check, bike wrong - check. Helmet too big - check. This is simply what has already happened before with Batman, you know, when the silly Batman was all that was known, Adam West, and then along came Michael Keaton as the dark Batman. We need more then one version, we need the silly and the dark, now it's time for dark seriousness
I felt the 1995 version wasn't a bad movie; it just got bashed by whining fanboys cause Dredd removed his helmet(yeah, I get it already, you're not supposed to see Dredd's face, this was in 1995 get over it already) but I also felt that the tone they went for with the movie wasn't really suited to Stallone. maybe this time, the new guy will nail it.
There's nothing to compare to as far as th e1995 movie. THat movie was an insult to the comic and Joe Dredd. THis looks like it has some promise. @Kainlarsen Mmm lets think Superman, Spiderman, Rocketeer, Sin City, V for Vendetta all seemed to work pretty well with same hero design. I said design BTW not Artwork. Those are 2 different issues. If they decide to do Dredd in a pink boiler suit that is a change in the design. I am not suggesting they copy the arkwork ala Sin City (impossible as scores of artists have drawn JD).
The Judge Minty fan movie seems to show you CAN make helmets that fit properly, this just looks stupid. I have no great hopes for this being any good, but the Minty one looks cool.
you can't defend stallones dredd movie it was crap. This one needs to be dark and violent i'd be happy with that and a proper mega city that doesn't feel like a prop, a city like in fifth element
ok so we're thinking of making a new judge dred movie, we'll have to bring it up to date obviously, so we'll change all his props and costume, also his character isnt really in keeping with modern sensitivities so we'll scrap that too, we shouldnt re-use one of the original AWESOME stories from the original comic cos we'd have to pay more for royalties so we'll just spew out the usual banal story lines and character arcs, better add a love interest. and maybe change his name.definately wont flop
that doesnt look like Judge Dread to me.... lol and I have -ALL- the original comics & graphic novels... sigh. Stallone was horrendous in the 1st one, at least no-one could possibly be as bad as he was for the role. rofl Anyone play that board game Block Mania .. that was a riot... such a beer & pretzel game.! lol
he doesnt fit the wears as stallone does. He is not a true law enforcer. Stallone is The law, this guy is someone pretending to be Dredd. Lol. I hope they dont make a bad movie.
@prometionable come on, stallone was SHIT !! i mean he took off his mask within what like 10 minutes of the film starting ... the WHOLE POINT of dredd was that he never removed his mask lol !!!
@prometionable If you've ever read the comics, that Stallone movie slaughtered everything about them... it wasn't bad, but it was just so untrue to the comics that a lot of people hated it. So hopefully this one will be better. At least Dredd never takes his helmet off in this new flick (supposedly)
i like the classic look of judge dredd..but i'm happy with the news of a new movie..perhaps with fan pressure..they can make the studios change the costume...i'm hoping this happens with the new superman movie..he needs the red tights
There are many cool 2000ad stories but if you are going to do Judge Dredd for goodness sake get someone with a chisel jaw chin! The character is all about the chin! I think stalone was great, although I would have gone for someone taller like Arnie. And for crying out loud no love interest the character is supposed to be a loner.
i know, instead of honoring the original design, the one which kept the same for 40 years - lets change it to look like every other sci fi soldier design made in the last ten years, that way we can guarantee to make a film that is simultaneously
@willpreston Nah, I think it'll please the hard-core fans--it looks like they've been faithful to the original McMahon/Ezquerra costume design from those very first issues of 200ad. With the small eagle and shoulder pads it seems to "work" much better than the exaggerated monstrosities of the Stallone version. The only thing I don't like is that they've mixed the '77 era Dredd costume with the '00 era Lawgiver. But it doesn't bother me that much.
@willpreston I'm not being an intellectual snob, I just think the original design will look better on screen. And I didn't say I preferred the original design, did I? I like both Bolland's and Dillon's versions but I think my personal favourite was either Ortiz or the few Kev O' Neill Dredd comics...offbeat and eccentric! And yeah 2000ad was in it's heyday from the mid '80's to the (very) early 90's...haven't bought it for a good 8 years, though.
@vollsticks - if they cant honour/attain the original art direction design they perhaps shouldn't try and make a bloody film.
I used to draw judge dredd over and over and so did millions of kids world wide, we all know he has a chain connecting his badge to his zip. he has a law giver with a dial. bolland made it look dope. dont try to better a classic.
just look at watchmen, i started wathcing that on telly the other day and was enjoying it but promptly switched it off when i remembered
@willpreston .......what they'd done to the ending, apparently zack Schneider had decided that Alan Moore's writing needed a bit of improving - what a fool
@willpreston is right and @vollsticks you must be a fool because the new look is by fare stupid and does not do dreed justice if anything they should leave it alone and not do another movie it looks really bad and is going to tank no one would want to see this version are you kinding me no taste at all the original look atleast did it justice and I dont care what anyone says at least stallone was the right person to play Dredd
To everyone complaining about Dredd's 'look', this is actually closer to what he looked like when the comic first appeared in 2000 ad back in the late 70's. Looks like this film is going to be about Dredd's early days.
@FalseImpressionist75 That's what struck me right away too. Very close to the original 2000AD first issues. It almost seems as if this photo is a semi-drawing in a way.
@kikomutante hahaha i was so ready to start a awesome discussion now but then i saw the last line of what you wrote and i lold so i decided that since i got a lol i would stop :P
nah not doing it for me, only thing in production that LOOKS authetic to the dredd universe is the "judge minty" trailer and thats a bloody fan film!. if this is the best hollywood can create its a sad state of affairs. And boland all the way for me!
I wasn't that dissapointed with the look of dredd as much as some people, but what he really needs to nail is SOUNDING like dredd. That could make it or break it for me.
@gruntfan91 Unfortunately with Dredd being a cartoon character - how exactly does he sound? His voice is going to be different in the head of every single person that's read a single drokking line of his dialogue.
first one wasnt bad. stalone played a good role thats why i liked it. but i dont think riko was a villian in the comics. id like an actual villian. please correct me if im wrong
@MrBrossett22 Yes he was a villain. He was sent to the Judges penal colony on Titan for 20 years for taking protection money, and killing someone who was unable to pay him.
I read the comics (admittedly, not all of them), an essencial part of Dredd's character is that he doesn't take his helmet off, you're not supposed to know what he looks like because it doesn't matter, that whole "I am the law" thing isn't just because he's a Judge, it's because he has no identity of his own bwsides for the law.
That's not the only problem, the rest of the film just constantly comes up with more and more stupidity.
@MrBrossett22 I don't mind changes for the sake of practicality. But when you change the essence of the character and his appearance, then you may as well make something else.
judge dredd isnt known for taking his helmet off and sylvester was the most gay person to play judge dredd i was never impressed with him an ive been reading the comic forever and im hoping this will smoke the 1995 version that was a great big drokk of a movie
I don't think we should judge the entire movie on this picture. Trust me when I say that if they duplicated the suit exactly it would look a little strange. I'm not sure if I'm happy with this look but it's certaily different.
As for his helmet staying on: we know it's Karl Urban so if he has the helmet on all the time it moght confuse others. owever I would prefer he had it on for more then 3% of the movie. Try not to give into hype just see the movie and (cheesy joke) JUDGE IT!
im not sure if he'll make a good dredd, i thought the judge dredd with stallone in it was klass, i remember watchn it as a kid and thinking it was the coolest thing ever, i loved it and still do, i think ill always perfer stallones dredd, and i perfer the older more original suit
what the hell's wrong with his... well all of his suit. the shoulder pads are wrong, the torso's wrong, the legs... well they could be right but i can't see them. the lawgiver's ok, and the badge is ok. Though it's supposed to be on a chain.
Oh man ... the plot sucks worse than the blando armour costume. Go check it out - Dredd giving Cadet Anderson a second chance because she's a 'mutant with psychic powers and would be useful to Justice Dept'!? Yep - it's official - this is being written by people who have not read more than 3 issues of the comic. And I thought the costumes and bike would be the worse thing about it. Why God, why??
@Frenchie66667 i liked cadet anderson in 2000ad....some good stories with dredd...i think this movie has got 2 bee better than stallones effort...im just glad theirs a new dredd movie comin out...personally my perfect dredd movie would be animated by the different artists.who worked for 2000ad...stories from the big meg....wood be good title
@eyewoodsay: You try convincing ANY animation company and distribution company/film finance company outside of Japan or South Korea to make and release an animated Judge Dredd movie in this climate where people think that any animated movie has to be for kids, and we'll all see how that goes. Remember Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within? Or Titan AE? A movie like the one you want would be direct to video in a New York/London/Tokyo/Toronto etc. minute. And THAT'S reality.
@Kainlarsen Why does disliking this new clearly fucked up version make you think I liked another early fucked up version? Btw, ease back on the attitude, it just makes you seem a complete dick.
@Frenchie66667 It's merely a sane and justified reaction to your ridiculous comment. You've seen a few screenshots and heard a vague premise for the plot. You haven't even seen the trailer yet. Don't you think it would look stupid if they had the massive shoulder armour on screen? They went for a more toned down 'riot police' look for very obvious reasons.
@Kainlarsen In answer to your question, no done right I think the iconic Dredd uniform would not look silly, because it's been done right in the Minty movie and doesn't look silly there. It looks unique and it looks like Dredd from the Comics ... but real. That's what these costume pics fail on. Also it's not just the TERRIBLE costume that's making me leap to assumptions, it's also the TERRIBLE bike, that looks nothing like a Lawmaster, and the woeful plot synopses.
The new film will not truly capture Judge Dredd's world because it's too big a concept for a 45 million dollar film. Plus the screenplay is very generic and watered down. It may scratch the bare surface of Dredd's world but Alex Garland's screenplay is more like Die Hard and Robcop 2 shoehorned into Dredd's world. And yes, it does read like it's been written by someone with almost zero knowledge of Judge Dredd.
@MultiVinniemac - I wouldn't put too much stock in that. Look to the back issues of 2000ad when the Stallone movie was in the pipeline, then came out - the comic plugged it like it was the next best thing to Citizen Kane. I could be wrong of course, but at this point everything I see and hear looks and sounds just ... dreadful (excuse the pun).
@Frenchie66667 : I know!!!! Why do these multi-million dollar studios insist on putting Dredd in a GIMP outfit??? And I agree with you about the Stallone costume - I didn't think they could make it any worse - but they did.
I just saw Judge Minty, too - a no-budget short Dredd film - and they managed to get everything right - even the bikes!!!
It's a test outfit. The real helmet now fits properly. Big shoulder pad with eagle? Would look cool but totally impractical for action stunts, which is why they didn't use them.
If Stallone is suppossed to be older Dredd and Urban is suppossed to be the younger Dredd, they should do a third film with Eastwood as the almost retired Dredd. Dredd was originally written with Eastwood in mind.
Sack the costume department on this one, bad bad bad design, fucking pissed off with this one, why like dragonball do they change what makes the characters so appealing, they change the story the characters the whole fucking universe its set in, fuck you pete travis FUCK YOU
@TOPDRAWDAVE I entirely agree - only the belt buckle and (to a lesser degree) the helmet approximate the actual Judge uniform from the comics. So why bother making the movie if you don't respect or like the original? Jeesh - even the atrocious Stallone movie costumes worked better than this. Thank Grud for the Judge Minty fan film - those guys have created really great, totally faithful costumes.
I know first thing I thought was....that man aint big enough too fill dredds suit , now sylvestor stallone physically really fitted the part, should of kept his helmet on though.

he doesnt fit the wears as stallone does. He is not a true law enforcer. Stallone is The law, this guy is someone pretending to be Dredd. Lol. I hope they dont make a bad movie.
prometionable 2 months ago
He doesn't look bad though. Certainly not far from the original Dredd from the comics.
GKFC 2 months ago
@prometionable come on, stallone was SHIT !! i mean he took off his mask within what like 10 minutes of the film starting ... the WHOLE POINT of dredd was that he never removed his mask lol !!!
MEKON17 2 months ago
@prometionable If you've ever read the comics, that Stallone movie slaughtered everything about them... it wasn't bad, but it was just so untrue to the comics that a lot of people hated it. So hopefully this one will be better. At least Dredd never takes his helmet off in this new flick (supposedly)
UltraMegaSuperPhil 1 month ago
@prometionable Are you shitting me? Are you that retarded??
That film was balls! Stallone was the WRONG choice. This looks to me to be far better!

@rprince418 I like the original 2000 A.D. Judge Dredd, not that yank poser and his "I YAM DAH LAW!"
mugging from that 1990's film which had no connection to Joe Dredd proper.
cha5 1 month ago
@prometionable Judge Dredd WAS a bad movie. Maybe you need to go see it again, the original.
Grenadeh 1 month ago
@prometionable
You obviously don't read 2000ad or Judge Dredd. The Stallone debarcle was just embarrassing.
rugow 3 weeks ago
i like the classic look of judge dredd..but i'm happy with the news of a new movie..perhaps with fan pressure..they can make the studios change the costume...i'm hoping this happens with the new superman movie..he needs the red tights

Totally gay!
Such a sissy can never replace Sylvester Stallone... Would have been worth a look with Sly as Dredd though...
raznor86 3 months ago
He looks alright but my suggestion for Dredd would be Michael Ironside.

Where's the CHIN?
wenaldy 3 months ago 2
the costume in the original 1995 movie was way better and the actor doesnt have judge dredds big chin/jaw
litningguy1 3 months ago
There are many cool 2000ad stories but if you are going to do Judge Dredd for goodness sake get someone with a chisel jaw chin! The character is all about the chin! I think stalone was great, although I would have gone for someone taller like Arnie. And for crying out loud no love interest the character is supposed to be a loner.
sang3Eta 3 months ago
Once again Hollywood has proved it has no original ideas anymore. Can't even let a movie rest a couple decades before going for a remake.
channell11 3 months ago
i know, instead of honoring the original design, the one which kept the same for 40 years - lets change it to look like every other sci fi soldier design made in the last ten years, that way we can guarantee to make a film that is simultaneously
1. shit
and
2. offensive to the fans
willpreston 3 months ago
@willpreston Nah, I think it'll please the hard-core fans--it looks like they've been faithful to the original McMahon/Ezquerra costume design from those very first issues of 200ad. With the small eagle and shoulder pads it seems to "work" much better than the exaggerated monstrosities of the Stallone version. The only thing I don't like is that they've mixed the '77 era Dredd costume with the '00 era Lawgiver. But it doesn't bother me that much.
vollsticks 3 months ago
@vollsticks - original judge dredd looked stupid and couldnt work today, I think brian bolland or steve dillon drew him the best, around 1991.
stop being such intellectual snobs and insisting that something from 1971 must be better than 89-93.
I am a hard core 2000AD fan
chopper for OZ was the hey day IMO
willpreston 3 months ago
@willpreston I'm not being an intellectual snob, I just think the original design will look better on screen. And I didn't say I preferred the original design, did I? I like both Bolland's and Dillon's versions but I think my personal favourite was either Ortiz or the few Kev O' Neill Dredd comics...offbeat and eccentric! And yeah 2000ad was in it's heyday from the mid '80's to the (very) early 90's...haven't bought it for a good 8 years, though.
vollsticks 2 months ago
@vollsticks - if they cant honour/attain the original art direction design they perhaps shouldn't try and make a bloody film.
I used to draw judge dredd over and over and so did millions of kids world wide, we all know he has a chain connecting his badge to his zip. he has a law giver with a dial. bolland made it look dope. dont try to better a classic.
just look at watchmen, i started wathcing that on telly the other day and was enjoying it but promptly switched it off when i remembered
willpreston 2 months ago
@willpreston .......what they'd done to the ending, apparently zack Schneider had decided that Alan Moore's writing needed a bit of improving - what a fool
willpreston 2 months ago
@willpreston is right and @vollsticks you must be a fool because the new look is by fare stupid and does not do dreed justice if anything they should leave it alone and not do another movie it looks really bad and is going to tank no one would want to see this version are you kinding me no taste at all the original look atleast did it justice and I dont care what anyone says at least stallone was the right person to play Dredd

To everyone complaining about Dredd's 'look', this is actually closer to what he looked like when the comic first appeared in 2000 ad back in the late 70's. Looks like this film is going to be about Dredd's early days.
FalseImpressionist75 4 months ago
@FalseImpressionist75 That's what struck me right away too. Very close to the original 2000AD first issues. It almost seems as if this photo is a semi-drawing in a way.

@JudgeBane ok thank you

@MrBrossett22 No problem.
JudgeBane 6 months ago
@MrBrossett22
Only problem was it is't judge dredd... at all.
Mrspikeprime 6 months ago
@Mrspikeprime sometimes you gotta change some things around to make them make more sence.
MrBrossett22 6 months ago
@MrBrossett22 Thus making it pointless making a film about Judge Dredd.

@eldospinks not a huge fan of change? well it could be worse, brandon routh could be playing dredd. you know from superman returns and dylan dog.
MrBrossett22 5 months ago
@MrBrossett22 I don't mind changes for the sake of practicality. But when you change the essence of the character and his appearance, then you may as well make something else.
eldospinks 5 months ago
wtf thats not dredds uniform next they will say the actors taking his helmet off again=/

bowrey118 6 months ago
I don't think we should judge the entire movie on this picture. Trust me when I say that if they duplicated the suit exactly it would look a little strange. I'm not sure if I'm happy with this look but it's certaily different.
As for his helmet staying on: we know it's Karl Urban so if he has the helmet on all the time it moght confuse others. owever I would prefer he had it on for more then 3% of the movie. Try not to give into hype just see the movie and (cheesy joke) JUDGE IT!
Battle5tarRJC 6 months ago
im not sure if he'll make a good dredd, i thought the judge dredd with stallone in it was klass, i remember watchn it as a kid and thinking it was the coolest thing ever, i loved it and still do, i think ill always perfer stallones dredd, and i perfer the older more original suit
metalalltheway001 6 months ago
And I suppose he will only have the helmet on for 5 minutes in the movie as is the norm with such things nowadays?
Fragminion 6 months ago
what the hell's wrong with his... well all of his suit. the shoulder pads are wrong, the torso's wrong, the legs... well they could be right but i can't see them. the lawgiver's ok, and the badge is ok. Though it's supposed to be on a chain.

redskin2005 6 months ago
Oh man ... the plot sucks worse than the blando armour costume.
Frenchie66667 6 months ago
@Frenchie66667 i liked cadet anderson in 2000ad....some good stories with dredd...i think this movie has got 2 bee better than stallones effort...im just glad theirs a new dredd movie comin out...personally my perfect dredd movie would be animated by the different artists.who worked for 2000ad...stories from the big meg....wood be good title
eyewoodsay 6 months ago
@eyewoodsay: You try convincing ANY animation company and distribution company/film finance company outside of Japan or South Korea to make and release an animated Judge Dredd movie in this climate where people think that any animated movie has to be for kids, and we'll all see how that goes. Remember Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within? Or Titan AE? A movie like the one you want would be direct to video in a New York/London/Tokyo/Toronto etc. minute. And THAT'S reality.
Neville6000 6 months ago
@Frenchie66667 Oh, shut the fuck up, you whiny faggot! I bet you liked the shitty Stallone version, didn't you?
Kainlarsen 6 months ago
@Kainlarsen Why does disliking this new clearly fucked up version make you think I liked another early fucked up version? Btw, ease back on the attitude, it just makes you seem a complete dick.
Frenchie66667 6 months ago
@Frenchie66667 It's merely a sane and justified reaction to your ridiculous comment. You've seen a few screenshots and heard a vague premise for the plot. You haven't even seen the trailer yet. Don't you think it would look stupid if they had the massive shoulder armour on screen? They went for a more toned down 'riot police' look for very obvious reasons.
Kainlarsen 6 months ago
@Kainlarsen In answer to your question, no done right I think the iconic Dredd uniform would not look silly, because it's been done right in the Minty movie and doesn't look silly there. It looks unique and it looks like Dredd from the Comics ... but real. That's what these costume pics fail on. Also it's not just the TERRIBLE costume that's making me leap to assumptions, it's also the TERRIBLE bike, that looks nothing like a Lawmaster, and the woeful plot synopses.
Frenchie66667 6 months ago
The new film will not truly capture Judge Dredd's world because it's too big a concept for a 45 million dollar film. Plus the screenplay is very generic and watered down. It may scratch the bare surface of Dredd's world but Alex Garland's screenplay is more like Die Hard and Robcop 2 shoehorned into Dredd's world. And yes, it does read like it's been written by someone with almost zero knowledge of Judge Dredd.
tubeman123100 6 months ago
@Kainlarsen: He probably dose-I like the 1995 movie, but not so much that I don't think that it could not be done again or improved upon.
Neville6000 6 months ago
@Frenchie66667 John Wagner has read the script before the film started as did Carlos Ezquerra so i think it will be ok
MultiVinniemac 6 months ago
@MultiVinniemac - I wouldn't put too much stock in that. Look to the back issues of 2000ad when the Stallone movie was in the pipeline, then came out - the comic plugged it like it was the next best thing to Citizen Kane. I could be wrong of course, but at this point everything I see and hear looks and sounds just ... dreadful (excuse the pun).
Frenchie66667 6 months ago
Heck I don't even think the badge looks right. How do you fuck that up?!
Frenchie66667 6 months ago

TOPDRAWDAVE 7 months ago
@TOPDRAWDAVE I entirely agree - only the belt buckle and (to a lesser degree) the helmet approximate the actual Judge uniform from the comics. So why bother making the movie if you don't respect or like the original? Jeesh - even the atrocious Stallone movie costumes worked better than this. Thank Grud for the Judge Minty fan film - those guys have created really great, totally faithful costumes.
