when working with the fresh dogbane, i read that the sap can cause blisters if it comes in contact with the skin. did this happen to you or anyone else? just curious before i start breaking it open and touching it.
To braid the permanent cordage, twist one strand clockwise in between your fingers then wrap it counter-clockwise aroud the other strand and repeat. Just made some the other day with yucca leaves.
Could you please identify what you're cooking in this video? I'm pretty sure it can't be dogbane because we know it is toxic, but it isn't clear what you're cooking here and it would be nice to know so no one mistakenly eats dogbane thinking that's going on. Thanks!
I love Dogbane. I have an unorthadox way of gathering it from my local woods, because a lot of people gather it in Fall when the stalks turn brown, I prefere to gather it while green, and I like to do a little retting with the fibers for a few days, then I work the fibers into two-ply strings for my bows. Strong and reliable stuff, especially when the sinew is rare. Good video.
I have an odd question Dave. Why do you always seem to have your knives mounted weak side carry? Other than the TBT, you are always reaching with one hand then having to switch. Just a thought. No worries Brother.
Dude Dave, you rule! You gotta make a vid on tanning hides and making leather by primitive means. That is a must see! I know a little, but Im sure you know much more. Thanks for the vids!
hemp was made illegal because the pharmacie companies couldn't reglulate its use, (anyone could grow it) and therefore couldn't market it efficiently. It really is a wonder plant for outdoor survival, google the uses it had before big brother stepped in, you'll be amazed.
Most/all of the hemp grown in Europe and US had no THC. Hemp cultivation was made illegal after a campaign of vilification by W R Hearst. WRH owned massive forests in Canada. Before the ban most paper was made from hemp, after, woodpulp. Work it out!
hey Dave, I watched this video and it inspired me to try it myself. I can't find dogbane so I used stinging nettle and made 4 feet of pretty strong cordage. It was thin, smaller around than a pencil usually, but still incredibly strong for it's size. I had to wrap it around my hands and work hard to snap it. Thanks for the video
Ive got tons of stinging nettle and false nettle on my property. How did you neutralize the formic acid sting? Did you use dead nettle, cuz everything around me is still alive and well. The boiled young leaves tastes like spinach :) (boiling neutralizes the acid so no sting)
dancdow-I didn't do anything to the stalks to neutralize the sting. I wore a work glove, wrapped my thumb and index finger around the stalk and ran from root to tip. that worked fine for removing all of the leaves, leaf stalks and 99% of the stingers. i also didn't smash the stalks like in the video, i peeled 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick strips off the whole length of the stalk. good luck
Dave you are a great guy and i love watching your videos. Unlike other survivalist/wilderness channels on youtube, you explain yourself in a way that is clear and easy to understand. There's no BS and no dilly dallying in your vids and that's why i will keep watching.
Pretty sure it groes in NC as well it is a Milkweed look alike. I was messing with the small diameter piece tonight challenging my wife to try and break it and she could not so I gave it a shot and i could not pull it apart either (Great Stuff)
Yes I have done it with Dogbane as well. The oiece I am talking about now dries the size of 20 lbs Spiderwire Fishing line, it would make a great leader.
One more thing i have been trying to make a wilderness survival bowl for some time now. using the technique of burning it out and scraping. But whenever i do it always cracks all the way through and it breaks apart. It might be because its NC hardwood. Can you reccomend anything.
Dave, I don't know if California has palmetto bushes like florida does but I assume they do because they grow into palm trees. Anyhow, if you haven't ever tasted the roots of these yet you might want to check them out. Quick and easy, just dig em' up and eat the core from the main root or any part that is soft and white wether it be stalk or not. Down home in Florida this is called swamp cabbage and tastes great raw or cooked.
You guys are missing out on your opening backgroung music! This guy believes in everything your about and might even be a guest on your show! Call him! Here is your back ground music--Ted Nugent -Stranglehold!

This is how our country was founded, except they used hemp. Hemp was the major product for cordage.
