Okay...I've watched all of this and here's my personal opinion. I went into this liking Kelli better because i listened to the soundtrack, but then after I saw this...I like Kate Clarke so much better (I still love Kelli and her voice though). Kate seems perfect for this. And I LOVE Aaron. He is the perfect Fabrizio...I like him so so so much better than Matthew Morrison. all in all though, I love this musical and I'm so happy I found it
I got to see this beautiful musical, when it opened up the Carnival center in downtown Miami. Right away it became my favorite replacing "West Side Story". It just pulls at the heart strings like no other musical. Last week I saw it again, a regional production at The Coral Springs Stage Door. I must say it was performed Beautifully. Again I came away from the theater feeling uplifted, and happy to be alive. Love is what makes our lives liveable, and no other show says that like one!
Aaron is amazing. Kate is crap at acting. I hate watching someone pretend to be in pain. A real actress finds it and recreates it. All she does is pout. Yet, WOW. Aaron was amazing.
What a beautiful pair...Katie and Aaron definintley fill the spots for me. Although, Kelli is an extraordinary she doesn't capture the innocence and emotion she should as Clara!
I saw a local production of this a year ago or so. The poor souls were in WAY over their heads and it became a tedious mess that was painful to sit through. So sad. I loved the Lincoln Center production and it pained me to see the show far so far.
I'm so glad you posted this clip. I'd read a comment somewhere that when "Love to Me" was sung on stage, you could hear a pin drop. I wanted to see what exactly was happening on stage/in the story when this song came up.
I love at 1:55, when she says something is wrong, and he runs to her. And at 3:45 when he wraps his arms tightly around her. Swoon.
This whole song is just spectacular, but 3:41 hits me really hard. I love the feeling of arrival that I get from this piece. I wish Broadway would stop catering to teenyboppers and actually advance the art form of musical theatre like this did. It's sad that it only lasted about a year, but in a way it's good. It won't turn into the stale tourist show that Phantom is and Wicked will become. More power to Adam Guettel and Lincoln Center! So good...
He was working on the "Princess Bride" musical with William Goldman (the original screenwriter). But, I think they've had some major issues with rights, Goldman wanting like 70% credit or something. Anyway, it's stalled.
@lf1234 He's finishing up a year's residency at the Signature Theatre in Virgina...they commissioned him to write a brand new musical, which he's finished, and they're going to produce it next year. Hopefully it will have a successful life that eventually leads to NYC! No word on the title or plot of the show yet, tho.
I didn't discover this show until after it closed, and it has officially replaced Les Mis as my favorite musical. Every song is breathtaking. I wish I'd gotten to see it before it closed!!!
I saw this for the first time 3 weeks ago -- can't get the music -- and especially this song -- out of my head. I've seen alot of musical theater, but never anything like this -- this is in a class by itself.
Because of these clips and comments, I bought the album last week. I cannot stop listening to it, it is so hauntingly beautiful. My husband -who isn't musical- doesn't understand what I like about it. Oh no, have I reached MY dividing day? :)
I saw it four times on Broadway and twice in Sacramento and uncountable times on my recording from the PBS Live From Lincoln Center broadcast...this musical just captures it all...the music, the romance, the sorrow, the loss, the redemption...and the tears, every time...It is truly a great tribute to the talents and the artistry of The American Musical Theatre...and I love it.
So, i know this aired on PBS, but was it ever massed produced, like on dvd? Cause i would certainly LOVE to own it, if not, i thank you sooo much for posting these! :D i found the whole thing, and just about died watching it. its truely wonderful. thank you again!!
How (and I mean this) HOW did this lose to "Spamalot?" It's a shame that such a beautiful, ravishing, gorgeous musical with one of the most beautiful scores and stories ever put on a stage walked away without the title of Best Musical.
I was fortunate to see it three times at the LCT, and I balled like a baby each time... Amazing score, beautiful voices, and well-acted. Seeing it here on youtube, I still tear up... Thanks, pianostix, for posting!
I think one of the reasons why it closed was b/c it would be impossible to replace the great Victoria Clark. With the recent revival of Gypsy, they decided to close the show b/c they can't imagine finding someone good enough to replace the great Patti LuPone. Wow, I made an analogy! LOL!
@Cityneversleeps4 I do agree. When I watch the Tony's I honestly tend to focus more on who wins Best Score & Best Book. Not saying that shows that win Best Musical aren't the best at times, but this show did win big at the Tony's and is sadly under rated at times. I say the same about the year The Lion King and Ragtime were up against each other. Don't get my wrong I loved The Lion King, but aside from the songs from the movie, I don't remember the rest. Ragtime is a masterpiece =)
Uh... no. Seriously, read the book, and/or watch the musical. They're beautiful beautiful things and you are hurting yourself if you do not read them.
She knew that there was something wrong with her, something different, but it she didn't think she actually had a disability or anything like that until she heard her mother saying that she isn't like everyone else.
Why does she have the mental breakdown? I kinda know the basic story line but not really can any one give me a basic plot summary? I'v always loved this music but I've been a little confused by it too.
I saw both the Claras...this one is to die for...saw her twice at the Vivian Beaumont and don't get me wrong...saw Kelli on her last night and I loved Kelli...and Aaron is so beautiful and so fabulous at the stage door and seems like a really nice guy...and this song...
Oh this song...
The way she just collapses back on him...God...don't we all want someone in our lives to sing this to us? It is perhaps the most breathtaking moment in American Musical Theatre...yes...breathtaking.
So the first time, I thought Katie overacted it; but I quite like it. She's so childlike in her anger which makes complete sense.
I think this is one of the simplest, most beautiful love songs ever. He can't explain how he feels to her in English so he tries to explain all the tiny little things that made him fall in love - which in turn really explains how deep his love is.
man. I LOVE this show. it's even better with the understated orchestration and focus on guitar. It's quite poignant.
this blew me away when i first heard it on the cd. i'd seen the production at lincoln center and was spellbound by the production, but "love to me" didn't get to me the way it later did on the cd because its words are so poetic--it's really an art song--and it wasn't until i concentrated on the lyrics w/o the visuals that i was able to give full attention to the song. like "beautiful" in sunday in the park with george, the characters should be still so we are not distracted by any movement.
The thing about the "poetic" nature of this song... What makes it so poetic (and heartbreakingly beautiful) is that his English isn't perfect, but he's completely earnest in what he's saying and he's trying his absolute hardest to convey his love to her. It isn't necessarily the most eloquent statement of love, but it's one of the most beautiful I've ever heard because it's so honest and his message is so urgent.
Without a doubt, this is one of the most moving, touching, heartbreakingly beautiful love songs ever sung on the Broadway stage. And yes, Aaron Lazar is as beautiful from the first row of the Vivian Beaumont Theatre as he is here as is his voice and he just became this character. And so sweet and humble at the stage door signing Playbills. What a smile and those dimples...
no, clara knows something is wrong, and she thinks that because of that fabrizzio won't wanna be with her. and fab's upset because of all his father's expectations of him
I thought he was upset during Aiutami because Clara had dissapeared? Her mom drags her off to Rome after she catches them together, and he has no idea where she is.
right before this scene, her mother is talking to her father on the phone and clara overhears her admitting that there's something wrong with clara and that really shakes her up- leading to this.
Wow, I still cry every time I see these two perform this number. It is my favorite love song of all time-- it is so simple and yet manages to show how love can triumph over anything.
aaron lazar is great in this role...great voice...high note at the end..but katie is wonderful too. the escene when she is singing on the floor make me want to help her and fixt it if i could.
I love this song, and Aaron Lazar is just... so fantastic. I remember when my family saw it (it must have been around the time this was shot, because I think the people filming it were watching to see where to put the cameras) my mom teased me afterwards about being jealous of his high note at the end of the song. Such a lovely note... he's a fabulous singer.
Aaron Lazaar would've gotten the Tony had he been in the original cast. I got to listen to his version of this song before I did Matthew and boy, Matthew sounded so amateur.
haha, i hate to say this, but i agree! morrison's a great actor, but his voice wasn't as smooth as aaron's, and he couldn't do the accent to save his life!
Matthew Morrison has said in interviews that he was hesitant about accepting the role because he didn't think he had the vocal training. However, Bartlett Sher and Adam Guettel both wanted him (and he had something of a name because of Hairspray). You can hear how much stronger Aaron Lazar's technique is -- especially when he sings "Il Mundo Era Vuoto." If Aaron Lazar had originated a role on Broadway before Piazza opened in New York, I'm almost positive he would have been the original Fabrizio.
He is my favorite fabrizio. Period. I wish I could have a recording of him singing this song instead of Mathew. Aarons voice is so soft and sweet.
