@devchev78 Look into getting the book by Sandy Jones called Beginning the Bagpipe and McCallum practice chanter. They will certainly serve their purpose, especially for a beginner. I think I have the long McCallum practice chanter and it works well. Good luck with your piping! :)
"Be still my soul" is one of my all time favourites.First time I've heard it on the pipes. Thanks! I love to play hymns on the pipes too and I love to play "when I survey the wonderous cross" and others.
I wasn't putting down Mormonism. All I wanted to know was what the difference between the two songs were? My sister was telling me about the "air pollution" at the SLC Temple. So good job! ps. My sister served her mission in Florida so I really don't think I would be putting the Church d.own
Yes, in fact the original poet who wrote the words suggested another song for the music "What Child Is This" (Christmas song), but after he died the LDS Church changed the music (and altered the words to fit) to "Scotland the Brave" in honor of the poet's Scottish heritage.
One of the original leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints was a Scotsman and piper names W.W. Phelps. When the founder of the Church was murdered by a mob he wrote the Hymn "Praise to the man" to the tune Scotland the Brave.
REALLY?! That is a brilliant idea! Who is there usually to protest - loudly? I mean, there must be people making quite a ruckus if bagpipes need to be dispatched to drown them out... don't tell me people like "Rev." Fred Phelps is there along with the "God Hates everybody" weirdos.
If you want to see why we pipe at General conference, just check out "Anti-mormon Bigotry" here on You Tube, you'll find out why. I managed to Google a link to a Myspace page that showed a piper doin' his best right out there playing "We Thank Thee Oh God For a Prophet" right in front of them. the Pipes tend to calm people's nerves on both sides.
I want to learn and get started. I know you have to be careful about choosing practice chanters. Any suggestions?

I don't want to be rude or anything but what's the difference between Scotland the Brave and Praise to the Man?
solar1eclipse2 3 years ago
The name, "Praise to the Man" is likely the original name of the tune. How could one mistake this for being rude?
iesfPiper 3 years ago
Most likely the other way around. A lot of songs back in the 19th century were patriotic songs rewritten into hymns.

I'll settle this once and for all... if one looks up "praise to the man" in a Latter-day Saint Hymnal, it will say "originally a scottish folk song"

There are some VERY minor difference to the musical phrasing between the 2 versions but essentially it is Scotland the Brave with different words.
