I'm 13 and since watching La Vie En Rose, the film about her, I've loved her :) Her music will definitely get passed on through the generations. & I love the crackly noise in all old music.
My three things I could never live without.... 1. Edith Warton books, 2. the documentary Grey Gardens - the story of the two Edith Beales...and 3. Edith Piaf music. Am I the only guy with an "Edith fetish?" LOL
Merci.
Edith Piaf is a shining light, still burning bright. Her personal triumphs, her pains all a part of the genius of her expression. I feel her emotion to my soul.

What a tragedy. This singer for the ages was killed by facists. All caused by war, greed, starvation: You know, the SOS that has plagued our species for a long time. Edith became an addict when there was nothing left of her country and she had been abandoned by her mother. Damn, though, she could sing!
What are you going to do when the NAZI party takes over our country? Oh, the NAZIS are now "teabaggers." And they are inching closer into our government like flies on the wall.
Out of all the amazing songs that Piaf sang... this is by far the one I cherish most. The piano is light and accommodating and just enough to follow her voice perfectly.
This is what always separates Piaf from every other singer: each song for her is a pièce de scène as much as it is a piece of music. Everything is always perfect and she doesn't even try: it's completely reflexive and instinctual.
@mofmedia Her voice is universally captivating and internationally well known. She may be gold voice of france admired all over the world. Even today after some 60-70 everyone who hears her voice its drawn to its vibrant colorful magical sound.
Well, perhaps not KILL... Mil i Maria are/is good, teh girl's got a voice for sure. Like Piaf though? A bit nasal, good pipes, goes a bit flat at times though. Piaf doesn't ever go flat.
Oh god, I'll probably get flamed by the diehards for this but... Mil i Maria have a vocalist who sounds a little bit similar to the great Edith. Hey, don't kill me if you disagree.
I think that the movie really opened up Piaf's music for a whole new generation. We will make sure her songs ( and that beautiful voice) are never forgotten.
Truly a great singer and and interesting history. The strength in her voice goes against her size. As I am just a very elementary French student I can only pick out phrases but the entire song is amazing and the image of its Stranger lurks about.
dont know much about this lady except that her voice was beautiful...heard that she sang with some type of accent? (also heard that she wasnt even french) why was she so special as a celebrity? as an artist, obviously her voice, but i heard she was a notorious type? just curious...thanks in advance
You've probably just insulted the whole French nation by claiming one of their greatest icons and popular singers of the 20th century was not French. She was indeed very French albeit like most others in Europe her descent was mixed over a number of generation. Born in Paris 1915, died in Plascassier 1963. On the day of her funeral hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of Paris, traffic came to a stand still, to bid her farewell. She is buried at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
nulifeagain: Piaf was born Edith Gassion in Paris. While her father was french, her mother (who never gave a whit for her) was of italian/Berber descent. And she was notorious for her outspoken & oft times profane language. She spoke & often sang using an argot/jargon version of french she knew growing up in the lower class Belleville area of Paris.
Her VOICE is what makes her famous then, now & forever. Incomparable!
If I'm not mistaken her parents had different then french roots, but I don't dare which ones, I will check properly, but she was born in Paris... I guess she was *patriotic* about Paris :-)
She started out as nothing. A street performer who grew up in a brothel and became a sensational national icon. The fact that she was able to make such an impact in such a short amount of time *comparatively speaking* is how she became so famous. If you ever have a chance to watch "La Vie en Rose" I highly suggest you do it. It's an amazing movie. :)
She was as French and Parisian as they come :-) Having Italian or even Berber ancestry is (and was) not so rare in France. I think that by the same yardstick (one of the parents having some foreign heritage), almost none of the American cultural or scientific icons are "really" American. Of course they are, my point is that such discussions are sily.
you're entitled to your opinion as i am to mine, and we're also entitled to comment on each others opinion and here is my comment to yours: When you admire someone, finding out about their ancestry only makes them more interesting. I don't think that it's "silly" to be curious about E.P.'s ancestry but you obviously think that and it's ok. Thanks for answering though because I was curious about her.
@nulifeagain I'm hungarian and agree what jurek47pink answered she was the greatest,a legend and never going to be anybody like her.Your interest is so american. At the time the word celebrity wasn't invented, people didn't show that much interest in a artist private life.We celebrated her woice and talent, her interpretation of human filings. She wasn,t any type, she was the only one, unforgetteble.

Was this song named after Albert Camus' book?
3LARI 9 months ago
@3LARI
I don't think so.
Camus' book is dated 1942
whereas this song and this recording - 1936,
as I mentioned in the video.
parlophonman 9 months ago
@parlophonman Yes I was thinking that '36 sounded a bit early for Camus, but was too lazy to go to Wikipedia!
Thanks. Perhaps this is where he got the name of the book?
