  • a couple things. 'hmong' and 'mong' are the same. 'hmong' is the way you say it in the hmoob dawb DIALECT, which most of us are. it doesn't mean its the RIGHT or ONLY way to say it. it is the way hmoob dawb pronounces it. in phonetics and linguistics its a feature called an 'ASPIRATED CONSONANT'. hmoob dawb is extremely rich in 'ASPIRATED CONSONANTS'. its a feature of our DIALECT.

  • just because other hmong/mong/miao dialects do not have or use such 'ASPIRATED CONSONANTS' does not mean they are saying the word wrong. ALL hmong/mong/miao dialects have been PROVEN to come from the SAME root language. SO NO MATTER WHAT WE CALL OURSELVES, ALL HMONG/MONG/MIAO CAME FROM THE SAME CULTURE AS PROVEN BY OUR LANGUAGE.

  • you're wrong about san miao. the heartland of san miao was established in the region of jiangsu. hmoob dawb dialect has many chinese words from the dialect of this region which speaks the chinese Wu dialect. it proves we were there. there are other archeological finds that connect san miao to the ancient cultures flourishing along the yangtze, cultures which are all proto hmong/mong/miao cultures: pengtoushan, daxi, qujialing, shijiahe and others.

  • I prefer the name "Hmong" simple because its unique and seperate us from the Mongolian, Muong and Mon. Miao are Hmong. You wrote that Miao were Hmong ancient enemies? You must be talking about Man. Miao and Man are not the same. Man are Mab, they were the Hmong ancient enemies. Understand why Hmong people make references to "Mab Suav."

  • @niamtxiv "Ancient Miao" and Man (Maab) are the same people. Later after Mong were grouped into Miao, the "Ancient Miao history" was mistakengly assigned to the Mong. Present day Mong makes up the majority of "present day Miao nationality" in China. It does not matter whether you prefer "Hmong" or "Mong", they are the same transliteration for the same people. +++The therm Mong makes it easier to trace history in China and helps clarifying the confusion of "Ancient Miao".

  • @niamtxiv I meant they are different transliterations for the same people. "Mab Shuav" are referring to groups of people. "Mongolian, Muong & Mon" as you mentioned could be distance relatives to Mong [Hmong] as well. See my Channel Page for more info on this subject.

  • For me, I'm not sure where we, the Hmongs, are from...yes, we originated from China and that's good enough for me...all I know is that I'm proud to be a Hmong

  • A LOT OF YOUNGER GEN. TODAY LOOK AT MONGOLIANS/HMONGS AND SAY WE MUST BE MONGOLIANS BECUZ BOTH ARE SIMILAR. AND SINCE WE'RE FROM CHINA WE'RE PART HANS. UNTIL U GOT CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE, W'E'RE NOT MONGOLIAN. AND WE'RE NOT HAN. may i remind those of u who dont know that it's the Hans that we fought against many generations ago. it's the Hans that try wiping us out and they're still trying till this day AKA "Chinese''.

  • @Sundincubus I was hoping that someone would reply to your comment. Han is a newer nationality that also includes ancestory from the Mong. This is a complex history because historical literatures were distroyed and altered in the past. It was the "ancient Miao" who were the main enemies to the Mong in ancient time. That sounds wierd but that is the truth. Hope we can learn more about the Mong.

  • I want 2make it clear to the person who said "hmong" is written in present tense and "mong" is refered to the past becuz we're mongolian. I dont know what this shinevangie got his/her sources from but I'm pretty sure hmongs are not mongolians or hans. we hmongs do not have records of our history but only thru stories being passed down. IT'S NOT CLEAR but i do know WE ORIGINATED FROM CHINA BUT WE'RE NOT HANS, NOR MONGOLIANS and certainly the word "hmong" does not mean "free."

  • @Sundincubus Thanks for your comment, but I do not understand your point. “shinevangie” did not say anything about Mong from Mongolia.*** Yes, some people jumped the gun when they see the term “Mong” and automatically says it was from Mongolia just like when people see “Hmong” and says they are “San Miao”. Part of it has to do with past misinterpretation of Mong history as San Miao, and previous elder generations had claimed that Mong were from Mongolia.

  • Hmong Flute or China Flute, lol

  • look i don't wanna argue or anything i was just saying. like seriously i'm sorry tht i don't know...but you didn't have to call me ignorant because you don't even know me. if it bothers you so much tht i even said tht then i'm sorry....gosh didn't have to be like tht.. :(

  • This arguement about the mispelling is hilarious. Especially since the word is an English bastardized translation of the pronounced word.

  • I think the best way to spell Hmong is Mhong if you write in abr is M is not H if we can fixed this way.

  • aww it sucks that some ppl don't know who Hmong people are & how the spell it Mong instead of Hmong :(

  • @shinevangie I think you have much to learn. Mong is not incorrectly spelled. Mong is H'Mong's history. Both terms Mong and Hmong are correctly used. I hope Hmong will not deny their ancestry history of the Mong.

  • @shinevangie You are ignorant my friend. You do have much to learn about the Mong/Hmong/Miao history.

  • @shinevangie the word hmong is for "white hmong," and the word mong is for "hmoob leeg"

  • @LILOSHORTY Thanks for your comment. "Hmong" is a newer transliteration for Mong. Some people, without knowing the Mong history, mistakingly claimed that "Hmong" was used by Mong Dawb and "Mong" was used by Hmong admittances. That information is not correct. "Hmong leng" also used "Hmong". It is a French transliteration for Mong. That is why all Catholic MongLeng also goes by Hmong, and it was used to educated the Mong in the past. Mong Dawb under prodestant, christian, etc also goes by Mong.
