Great posting. Many thanks, Symphonyofflowers. Indeed, we all have our own England. Mine is that of Kate Bush's youth, before it became obsessed with financial services and real estate, and before crass materialism took over.
@jezkn No, actually she doesn't. She was just posing for the photo. That picture was taken at the 75th anniversary of the London Symphony Orchestra. Kate, Cliff Richard and some other artists were invited as special guests for the anniversary concert.
This song makes me want to cry, her vocals are beautiful. I swear, she is so beautiful and her music is true art. Kate Bush should have her own genre called "Babushka".
This is the best of Kate; sure she went on to do fine things with 'Hounds' - 9th Wave is still mesmerising all these years later - but she never sounded as passionate and rooted as here. Gawd bless ya gal.
a friend told me when you visit England it feels vaguely familiar, almost like you are home, in a way. when i hear this song it makes me want to hop a plane there...and i can picture myself saying, when i have to leave to come back to the states, "Oh, England...i don't want to go..." for my English Rose in Kent. xxx
@david20101952 And if you ever visit, try to see the old airbases in Lincolnshire, the atmosphere really gets to you, the beautiful calm scenery is really at odds with the activity there during the war, but its almost as though you can still sense the anticipation and anxiety of the pilots. Quite spooky but compelling. I always think of this song when I am there, to me this song is for those boys who left that place and never returned.
@Icequeen1962 i will be sure to visit the airbases and remember the brave RAF pilots who fought against Hitler's Luftwaffe and enslavement. The world owes them so much...
@arosegrowingold i think of this song often when i visit the war graves of the fighter pilots in lincolnshire where most of them were based.. heartbreaking. this song captures the futility of war , the tragic waste of life and the loss of hope.
Okay, I was hooked when I first saw the "Love and Anger" Video and now the more I see of her the more I enjoy her music and also falling in Love with her! (Okay, so delusions of granduer! My favorite song is "The Man With The Child In His Eyes!"
"Hounds of Love" may be hailed as her masterpiece but I have always had a great deal of affection for Kate's "Lionheart" album. It's not nostalgia - it created a beautiful sadness inside me even when I heard it for the first time. I would certainly rate this collection of brilliant and beautiful songs in my top three favourite KB albums. There is no one who comes anywhere close to comparing with Kate Bush for sheer musical genius. Love to you Kate. <3
as an englishman and an ex british soldier nobody, but nobody will ever take my land from me except my true love who inspires me and who owns my heart the land itself her name morgaine and arthur her consort.
This song is so beautiful! I feel as if I am in the narrorators position in the song's story whenever i listen to it. I want to go to England someday!
When I first bought this album in the late 70s, I think I played this track ten times more than any other... It is a magical song... I don't think I understood the lyrics when I was young... I just heard the amazing longing and sadness in the song...
Lovely, She even works in the legend about the Ravens and the Tower of London(If the Ravens leave the Tower - England will Fall). Kate can summon up a sense of nostalgia and 'Englishness' with just a few lyrics...more than our flag waving football team ever can. I know who has the Real Lionheart, and she is Here! It certainly ain't Wayne Rooney and pals...Oh, that legend reminds me...During the War I heard they clipped the Ravens wings, to stop them from flying away! lol...Just in case!
And Yet Another Favourite Record OF ALL TIME! Sister-in-law visited and took the kids to Kensington Gardens to see Peter Pan. Brought this gorgeousness to mind.
Couldn't agree with you more, arosegrowingold. Most Kate Bush songs have their meaning distorted into something different. Mind you, Kate seems to intend that to some songs. As you and I know, however, this song is unambiguous. Or should be, at least. The pilot's going down, and reminiscing. That's what Kate said, that's what it is. =]
@Vulchid Age is but a number, if you like this woman ASK HER OUT! My sister was a bit older than her husband but he has recently passed on due to a heart defect. Life, the universe and everything works in a strange and mysterious way. Time is fleeting, one day you may get the "look out for that bus"," what bus?" SPLAT!. The only way you will ever find out if you two are a match is if you open your gob and make the first move. Go on, you may/may not regret it. : )
She is stunning .A true English rose who can maintain her good looks and dignity .Britany speers and Madonna should watch this and see what a TRUE woman is like ,You dont have to perform like some cheap tart to sell records like them .
@DeccaQuinne and floppy...Lionheart (KIng Richard) spoke more French than English) He also was a greedy pig but an awesome fighter...I've learnt recently. The chateau were he was killed now belong to a Belgian chocolate maker, whose mum was Japanese. Bank loan for the purchase has head-office in Switzerland but the clerks go on yearly trip to Lichtenstein...in a Japanese motor. It's all f...t-up, in'it?
@PoireauMan68 Nationalism is a very new concept - so, no - it's not particularly f***ed up.... and most of the English aristocracy has French roots - 1066 & all that.
@dartmoorboxing Doctor Botox...You can't compare the incomparables...MAdonna is a grandmother who still does aerobix ans sing shite songs...and Spears just a filthy whores..both have contributed to female neo-alienation or liberation (I;m cnfused here) BUSH (Kate) is a singueuse and an artist ! I'm not too sure about the flute here but interesting enough. I;m more of a harmonica fan meself.
I just did a little search. It seems the picture is from the Melody Maker Readers Poll award ceremony in November 1979. Kate won the award for best female singer.
I have always found that the best bands, musicians and singers are english.Yet i'm not english.
