  • OMG! i cannot WAIT to get a 455 this summer!

  • absolutely bitchin! that cam makes it sound fantastic! is that h/o??

  • NO rice there!!! Nice ride...love the Cragers too

  • Id love to see the look on a rice burner drivers face when you pull up next to them in that. Pontiac is the best hands down

  • It's usually pretty uncomfortable for the the guy and his girlfriend in the import. All the stories he told her about how fast his car is suddenly are out the window!!!!

    Mz

  • hahah,i have just such a true story,involving a 70 firebird,and a tiburon.

  • @mjzack its so funny when ricers beak when they have to put $10k into their car to make them accelerate like this, yet it only cost about $5k to put in a good 4link system to make these cars handle like imports. HAHAHA

  • @OwnzorDood816 I'm not so sure. I also have a muscle car but the rice burners are made to take off fast with lots of traction. There super light and made for handling. Our muscle cars do out do them in the looks and sound department though.

  • a 455 is the moter to run with i paid 15,000 for my 455 to be built and it has 900 horses without a super charger or blower built by millers race team and it has not yet lost a race it runs 8,s in a qaurter mile and is a daily driving car that car in the video has work done to it much respect especally since its a classic nice car

  • Right, cool story LMAO.

  • Nice! I get the chills hen im hearing that roar! im building a 461:a now with kauffman heads and maybe a RA-IV cam for my -70 bird. What kind of exhaust do u got on that beuty?

  • I am running 2 1/2" out of headman headers through Magnaflow muflers.

    Mz

  • 427,428,400,421,455.....ill take it with the pontiac ohc six if i have to !!! best car there is keep up the awesome work on that car!

  • i WANT....... HOLY CRAP THE BEST COMBO FOR THAT CAR HANDS DOWN.!

  • I'll take the 427 instead thank you.

  • Why? What makes the 427 that much better?

I am looking for a technical answer from you.....not a my buddy story, I used to have one story or a back when I was in high school story!

  • haha, ya i love those stories

  • solid lifter cam, more horsepower, rougher idle, a mans engine. l88 427 baby the hot rod chevy

  • Ok....I can build a Pontiac 455 that way.....the RA-IV was solid lifters. What in the inherent design of the Chev 427 is superior to the Pontiac 455? What I mean is.....from a thermodynamic perspective, how does the Chev. engine architecture out perform the Pontiac engine architecture?

  • they're just bowtie babies who list off numbers and engine codes and don't know wtf they really mean.

us Indians are smarter than that!

  • Agreed.

  • Chevy engine architecture CANNOT out perform the Pontiac engine architecture. It is fact. Stock for Stock Pontiacs have a more performance oriented design. Chevys are about making as much power as possibel (high hp at high RPM). Pontiacs are about making SMART power(high torque at low rpm). Ram Air IV, Ram Air II, and Ram Air V cars will rape an L88. (with a good driver).

  • i agree on the chevy vs pontiac comparison..thats why chevy had to come out with the big block with canted valves..im not sure the comparison of the L88 vs RAV, cuz id love to have both in my garage!!! LOL..but, i will say that i believe, like you said, that stock for stock pontiacs make more torque and useable HP..they have a great engineered motor! i just wish they had adjustable rocker arms and steel timing gears instead of that silly nylon cam gear, tho easily fixed!

  • @mjzack If we're getting into the architecture, then we need to get into the design of the 455 journals, which is why many Pontiac guys opt for the 400 over the 455. Not to mention, if we're going to compare the poncho to the rat, the 427 can rev to the moon if need be. You have a sweet first gen F-Body there....

  • nice 67 bird! motor sounds clean as hell!

  • it's a 68. (no vent windows, and wrap-around front turn signals)

  • great car motor sounds good

  • What year is this?

  • Looks to be a 1968 Firebird?

  • sounds great! what heads/cam are you running?

  • I am Running 6x-4 heads, Rhoads Lifters & RA IV cam

  • My 462 ran much stronger when I removed the Rhoads lifters and installed some old nos Johnson lifters I had. I experienced stronger bottom end torque on top of getting rid of that nasty ticking sound.

Rhoads will sell a set of there lifters without the bleed down slot.

I run a 2.56 posi rear end in my car.

    The RA-4 cam isn't a big cam in a 455. I run the Crower 60919.

    Happy Motoring......................

  • that is a bad ass firedbird, only if i would have kept my 77, it had a 455 in it out, but didnt have the time or money for it

  • good lookin car

  • Great car. I have the 1968 Mechanics Illustrated when they first tested it with the 400 small block. Yours is a big block period.

  • All Pontiac V8s from 1955-79 at 287 to 455 cubes ... used the same block, and weighed 600-660 pounds depending on accessories installed (not cubes). The only exception is the 301 and 303 which are "butchered" versions, shorter block deck height, etc. 326-350-389-400s used 3.0 diameter crank mains, 421-428-455 3.25 crank mains. But there are now cranks sold that stroke a 389 or 400 to around 449 to 461 cubes depending on which crank you buy.

  • 455 pistons are only .030 or 6 cubes bigger than 400s, but the stroke is 49 cubes bigger. A 455 crank in a 400 gets you 449, the other 6 cubes is with a .030 bigger bore. Some debate -- is the 287-455 a big block or small block. It was beefy/heavy for when it was only 287 cubes. A Chevy BB weighs almost 700, a SB about 550, so Pontiac is in the middle and weighs about what Olds/Buick 455s weigh. Personally, I'd not call it a SB because it will accommodate around 500 cubes.

  • Great info. Thanks. I thought the 400 was the biggest they had for it at the time. I wouldn't think it a small block either.

  • Yep, the 400 was the biggest engine allowed in that body style until 1971 (2nd generation bod started at 70 1/2) when the 455 started being allowed. Though the biggest engine from 1967-69 was the 428, it was allowed in Grand Prixs and larger cars. You ought to google on of the baddest ass Pontiacs ever - the 1969 428HO 390hp Grand Prix. Back in 1969 a magazine clocked one at 5.5 to 60 and 13.8 stock! The perfect grannies Hot Rod at around 4000 pounds, LOL.

  • I shall google the 69 428HO. Sounds as nasty as a Hemi Superbee ( Rare ) Thanks again.

  • The 287 was only made in 1955. It became a 317 in 1956 and on and on until a 455 in 1970. When it was a 287 it weighed the same weight as when it was a 455. So yes, it was heavy for a little 287, and would use that "beef" later when it almost doubled in size. Definitely beefier than small blocks. But a Chevy BB weighs about 75 pounds heavier than a Pontiac, A Chevy SB about 90 pounds lighter, so Pontiac 287-455s are kinda in the middle.

  • My first job in this world was for Terry Spears of Terrys GTO Restorations. I have owned several PMD's over ther years. I desire a 70 Goat with a RAM Air III or IV. My father has a 73 455 T/A. I learned something new today guys I didnt know that pontiac made a 287

  • Are you talking about Terry's GTO in Orlando?

  • that was an old comment...yeah...why

  • All 326-455 Pontiacs share the same dimensions;bore spacing, camshafts(sans SD 455),rods,valve covers, timing covers, distributors(sans SD 455),deck height, lifters, intakes(sans ports & x-over),& all are internally balanced. The term 'big block' & 'small block' DIDN'T come from cubic inches. It came from the same engine maker building 2 engine designs;1 with BIGGER bore spacings & deck heights,to make a BIGGER CID engine. The term 'SMALL BLOCK Chevy' didn't exist until they built the 'BIG BLOCK'.

  • thats a nice 68 bird

  • Love the Pontiac Power! Thank you for not putting a Blow-Tie in it! BTW, there is no such thing as a big-block Pontiac. All blocks are externally the same size.

  • sweet ride bro

  • Zack, your car looks and sounds wicked. What's your next project? D

  • Bless you man, you ROCK

Pure Muscle Car pioneer you are

  • GodBless you, Ive always wanted to see a motor that big in a 67 firebird

  • uhhh it is a 68 not a 67.

  • atleast he didnt ask if it was a 65 mustang, i get that all the time with my 68 firebird.

  • I agree I went to HS with a friend that had an early 'bird cammed 428, what a handful. Hoooah!

To the O.P. nice job, enjoy that torque monster!!

  • Hell Yeah!
