I am reading Miles: The Autobiography [Paperback] by Miles Davis (Author), Quincy Troupe (Collaborator) right now, and on page 52 he mentioned Jimmy Lanceford. That is what brought me to this video besides the title of this song. Sounds splendid.
Interesting how some folk got wind of this song when it was done in the '80's by an English trio (Fun Boy Three). That's when I first heard it and was amazed when my mother recognized it from her youth. She was amazed to hear it again after so many years.
Lunceford was a high school music teacher in Memphis and his 1928 band was so good that he basically told them that they were going pro. His band was a very discliplined one, and you can hear the marching band in them.

there were rumors circulated that Jimmy was poisoned by a fish-restaurant owner who was unhappy at having to serve a "Negro" in his establishment.

To me that "Memphis Bounce" of Jimmie Lunceford sounds like orchestral rock'n roll !
