Hi Dude... hope you can help...

I have windows Vista, i got SP2 on it, but when i run windows update, click 'check for updates' i get error 80024A000

nothing i have found anywhere, i have tried plenty of things, that i have seen on the web but there not working.. its also not letting me update, defender and security essentials... when in safe mode i managed to update security essentials. but windows update wouldnt run...

My windows update will freeze when i restart, its always at configure stage. If it does reboot it will freeze upon loading windows. At stage 2 0%complete. Figure this one out. No matter what update it will freeze, Im just sick and tired of being scared to update my WINDOWS vista. The first month I got vista I had a problem with my dvd drive, suddenly it would stop and I didnt know what was the problem so I just restored the system. I had the same problem again and again and I used the same solution. Then I discovered a pattern, every time I had an update my drive would stop so I turned it off (despite the warning) . From then I didn't have any problem what so ever.

In my oppinion I only keep windows update turned on, I never really bother with non important ones unless I need to. Like I noticed a lot of microsoft sites were using silverlight, so I added that etc etc. It is best to get all the 'critical' updates as they often include patches to stop new viruses & hackers from gaining access etc.

Skip the hardware updates unless you are using the once that came with windows, and even then you shoud probably only install it driver updates from WinUpdate if you have issues related to the hardware.

I install updates blindly on dusins of computers and have only had systems die once or so from it, i think I have updated about 17 mac's and one had issues and one died, but then im not realy an expert on mac.

chris, i have always had these same problems, for some reason some comps just get to the point where windows updates just start to fail!!! is there any way to troubleshoot this, is there some file to delete or some cache to reset to maybe get it to work, I have a vista machine and an xp machine with failed update problems!

everything he said is so true. although i never had a vista problem after updating. althouhg my HD audio driver, the one vista update gave me, just forced my audio to die.
