I have thin quilted maple veneer that's maybe 1/16 thick. It's also wavy, how would I get it flat and apply it to the body (I'm assuming before I cut out the body, from what you did here)? Would clamping it like that flatten the waves in the wood out?
i have a question, if i use french polishing on the guitar, does it affect the sound?? will it hold back the sustain? i'm going to build my own guitar so i'm trying to figure out wich method i gonna use for the finish.
I don't think it will affect the tone as much as the resonance of the wood, quality of construction and the pickups used. Natural sustain is from a solidly built guitar that is alive, it rings. You can feel the guitar vibrate in you hands when you play it unplugged. (or not)
if you want to have a bright tone in ur instrument soft maple is not ur man.
even though it's maple it doasen't have the same tonal qualities of the maple that they use in strats and some ESP GL models. it's a wood that produces a lot of midrange sound, but real (that's right) maple has a lot of high frequencies while the mids are not as prominent.
thanks, i really enjoyed watching these videos. as soon as i get some money i will be making my first guitar, nothing special, curly maple neck, rosewood finger board, solid alder body. i plan on doing a solid finish or a natural finish.
Welcome to the club...there are few things I'd rather do than build guitars and hear how the next one sounds and see how well it plays. It's an adventure every time to create the perfect instrument.
Realy cool vid I love watching the process on how a guitar is made very neat! looking forward to seeing the next vid ! Thanx for sending me this footprints !

You could try to dampen it and then clamp it flat between two stiff cauls.
