This whole video is great (excellent choice of music btw, really suits!) but 2:52-3:02 is by far the most brilliant clip. The SR-71 - easily one of the top 3 aircraft ever built.
@BrucePartingtonPlans Yeah man, retro opra german/russian thing or something,I'm just a dumb ass but I love this vid.HooRah Go A.F. 2854thces/24thces.I can still see all the glory of what it was. We just maintained runways but as you know team effort is everything.Peace be with you.
This plane was generations ahead of its time and retired way to early, nothing the Russians, chinese, koreans, or any other country that tried to shoot it down was able to come up with anything close to this master peace.
There is a facebook page called Blackbirdpark sr seventy-one. It has the sr and yf series in a AFB area where you can see and touch them. There are photos.
@2004XP Actually, the SR-71 did much more than take photos. For instance, it gathered electronic intelligence on Russian and Chinese radar installations simply by flying close to the border and recording the transmissions. And it also served as a launch platform for some drones (never really worked well). Also, they were used with the first look down/shoot down missiles. Would have been a devastating platform...
@98TheBlack Because it wasn't a good plane. Cool yes, good not really. It could barely carry its own weight and was useless as a military aircraft. It's IS a VERY cool plane though, I agree with that.
it actually depends if you have "hardliner" as an extra or not. and can i for once watch a youtube video with out reading comments which are boring and no one is interested in? :)
@98TheBlack COP - Cost of Operation, in this case it was the price of its custom fuel and the addition of satellite technology, both made this remarkable plane obsolete. The Concorde never recovered from the Air France crash, after refitting all Concorde jets with Kevlar fuel tank it became a negative for both Air France and British Airways to keep operationally active. In summary, sadly it all comes down to 1 thing... money. Both Marvelous pieces of Engineering.
@captjim007 Wrong. Rockets already carried people some time before sr 71. And those are pressure suits. mig-25, u-2 plane crews has nearly the same. (Many present planes has some of that too). Astronauts are those who travel over 80 kilos (50 miles) attitude. Service ceiling of SR is 85k feets (26kilometers). Its only third needed for space plane. Escape velocity is not needed to archive except if you want to fly with turned of engines.
@stampede122 They've improved upon the technology. They haven't so much improved on the price tag.
In particular I'd say materials science has probably come a ways in 50 years which would probably change the way they would design such a thing if there were a need.
my favorite plane.....the speed the technology the suits they had to wear....FUCKING SPACE SUITS XD....it's cameras can zoom in so close that it can make the grooves on a dime look like buildings.......this plane is truely the best plane ever made.....*salutes*
@cooldude1875 not quite.... it goes up to 80,000 Feet which is fucking high for an aircraft and takes images/footages from the face of the earth (half of the planet)
@TosXMellow you said there will be a bunch of cod people saying "7 killstreak" but guess what I didnt see any of that shit so far so you got that wrong
@Dmitry59rus yaaa..be proud that any russian airshow shows the quality of Martin Baker 0-0 ejection seats, russian fighter use..in rest father stalin is still pushing u to next level of stupidity..lol...and Korea means 1 million cave soldiers against WC, soap and electricity, once again u prove how coward u are...btw, how's ur friend Gorbachev? ...
Aircraft engineering at its best, sad that they don't use it anymore, if im not mistaken they don't use it because of the cost right? which is mostly costly from it bleeding fuel. Someone get on a sealant that wont melt! lol
Kind of amazing what a group of talented engineers with silde rules and pencils can do. A Marine Major friend of mine was in the tower when an SR-71 filed a flight plan and launched from a base 3,600 miles away. It taxied into its' revetment on base 30 minutes later. That's Mach 6 folks.
@MrAUDU Sure, so you say that it's average traveling speed was Mach 6, yet somehow the official record that the Blackbird set is 2,193.2 mph. The SR-71 can't push such speed at all, not to mention averaging at this speed over 3600 miles. You'd need a scramjet engine for that and these are still in early prototype stages of development today, the engineers didn't even dream about them in early 70's.
@pisseddotcom I did not personally see the event. I merely reported it. He had no reason to lie to me. There are military machines in existence whose true performance is not ever revealed. Now if you can prove me wrong by revealing your top secret clearance I will accept your premise.
@MrAUDU I don't need anything like top secret information clearance. All you really need to know is that the SR-71 already works at the very edge of overheating at Mach 3+ speeds. Or maybe that the turbofan blades are very likely to melt should they work at hypersonic speed.
Anyways why would they bother with posting official records and making public demonstrations if they didn't want to reveal the SR-71's high-speed capabilities?
@XxXxXxXxXxXxXxish The fastest man made object ever created went 150,000mph. And that was a probe called the Helios 2 which orbited the sun.
The Sr-71 can reach speeds of mach 3.5 which is about 2,200mph. But it a lot of people believe the aircraft can go much faster. But the faster it goes the less safe it is for the pilot and the aircraft.
@XxXxXxXxXxXxXxish Your friend was right. It's the fastest jet engine aircraft in history. But it goes no where as fast as lets say the space shuttle re-entering the atmosphere. Or an orbiting probe.
I've heard that this leaks fuel when it's on the ground because it needs to compensate for massive expansion when it's at speed. It is the sexiest aircraft I've ever seen, no doubt about that.
If they could pull this off in 1976 , just imagine what they have now . The record may be unbrocken publicly , but secretly im sure is a diferent mater !
@viper775 The number you give are NOT normal sustained cruise/mission speeds. The MIG is made from regular aircraft aluminum and the engines are regular turbojet. Speeds this fast basically trash the aircraft and engines. The SR-71 can fly at mach 3.5 a long as it has fuel. I've also heard that the SR-71 has been tracked cruising at altitude of close to 37,000 m. again this is normal cruise, not a one shot burst.
@shaftster2001 Well may be not, Concorde, Victor K2, Spitfire may be contenders, Sr 71 Mach three + two guys in space gear who piss in a bottle and a tanker to follow a soon as it gets off the ground. Concorde Mach 2+ 100 passsengers a toilet, champaine and caviar, and a stroll down to chat to the nice trolly dolly and a no tanker to follow.
The X-15 Mach 6.72 (4,520 mph / 7,274 km/h) and it is a rocket not really an airplane. The SR-71 still is the fastest production aircraft known today.
The X-15 has two wings and is more heavy than air thus it is a air plane, the differences is that the SR-71 was a operational airplane build in series, and fly with own propulsion from the ground. The X-15 is only an specific research air-plane to hi velocity and hi altitude.
yes its a plane if it uses fixed wings to achieve lift, even those achieving lift throug bodyshape are refered as planes. rocket has no lift generating surfaces and flies on balistic.X was a plane using rocket engines, but it was experimental prototype, i think records are set in production aircraft
smart observation, I never thought of that. hmmm. But in terms of speed- I would want to "bomb" asia and be back by lunch- what do we have in 2010 that can do that?
I've spoke to some of the original test pilots for these things years ago. They told me that they knew they were going faster than their speed indicators were telling them. They say they had a "feel" for the aircraft but what came out on the meters at the end of a test flight was the logged result. No questions asked or deliberated.
no it actually hit 2,250 mph (3,620kph) or Mach 3.4 almost three and a half times the speed of sound (i wonder if you talked you voice would be behind u XD) but i heard the fastest plane in the world flew at 4,500 mph over area 51 but you never know
As I was telling, this thing was allready using the SCRAMJET ( Supersonic Ramjet ) system for testing. Mach 3,5 is official topspeed for " the public ". It was much more. Also the titanium can have much more heat, than is produced at Mach 3. Look at the numbers, you will know.
This whole video is great (excellent choice of music btw, really suits!) but 2:52-3:02 is by far the most brilliant clip. The SR-71 - easily one of the top 3 aircraft ever built.

I agree with you!

It's interesting to speculate, but we have satellites now so maybe nothing similar?
topbanana188 2 years ago
Its not that something outclasses this beast.... its a reconn plane....satelites replaced it.

smart observation, I never thought of that.

Yes. The Jet that flew over Area 51 was known as the F22 Raptor. It Broke the Record in 2001

The most amazing aircraft ever made!
