  • sutton seems very static here. how long ago is this? but i have to say, i think i prefer this to samantha barks.

lea michele's take on eponine was actually very good and is better than sutton and barks/obligatory-lea-michele-comment-on-anything-musical-theatre-related-on-youtube-done (boy, her PR team must love us)

  • Love her showing off her with her little riff on "Pretending" cute!

  • @justmeandtommy Lea Michele is fricking amazing, i suppose you think t swift could do it better? well this just shows that your taste in music SUCKS

  • Hahaha. It's best to sit back and relax and watch true morons prove they're, well, true morons. Anyone with an ounce of brain power could see this thread is obviously overrun by very persistent trolls who have beef with Sutton. Not to mention, just hate being wrong and being told so. So much so, they're willing to make asses of themselves.

Nobody and nothing can take away the fact Ms. Foster gave a great performance. Not even elementary level name-calling. XD Sutton was PERFECT in the role!

  • @DveryOverratedSutton I love how your prving ur a loser by showing everyone u named ur username about how u hate her.

  • @SuttonFosterSTINKS Your username is bitter

  • At least she's better than Frances Rufelle.

  • like this show is just sooooo Misery and Duldrums...BUT the songs are so freakin goooooood you just have to give on in and suffer

  • So many dislikes and criticisms toward my idol! Why, why, why???

  • she has no emotion in this at all

  • Comment removed

  • @mermanluponegoodreno Yeah, what's up with that? "I've only ben pretendeeeeng!" Lol! Obviously she needs speech lessons in addition to voice and acting lessons.

  • Comment removed

  • @LaMisereHQ sorry dude! but I think you just adore her for her pretty face and not her voice. she didnt ACT it out. there was no emotions nor acting while shes singing it. she just stood there and sang..nothing compared to Lea Salonga. why dont you youtube her and look for yourself? Lea Salonga showed much compassion to this song. and I am not telling lies.

  • @justmeandtommy Nah, Lea Michele did not suck when I saw her at the Hollywood Bowl. She was pretty good. Sorry you don't think it is Sutton's role, even if she already owns it. OK if you don't like her, but some rationale would help. I CAN tell you why it was her role, though. Not only did her voice soar live but the intensity had my palms sweating. It wasn't about high notes either (even though she nailed them). It was her dedication to inhabiting the mind and soul of the character.

  • The ones spewing outright lies fail to provide evidence to support the claims she sucks. Until then, your opinions are little more than hot air. I saw Ms. Foster's Eponine 4 times on tour, and to date, nobody has even come close to the force of her acting. So subtle yet so effective. She avoids the overdone gestures and replaces them with far more intense ones that are timed to the music and support the character's inner struggle. Her expressions alone grab you. The resigned ending poignant. <3

  • Her voice is so fabulous!

  • Fail!! Her voice is beautiful but theres no emotions. Sigh. Disappointing!! Go Ms.Lea Salonga!

  • @chloeabibas Sorry. Opinions could only go so far before they are basically blatant lies. To say she is exhibiting NO emotion is like saying she is speaking instead of singing. It isn't a matter of opinion because your statement is actually a lie. She is most definitely feeling the song and I know I feel it too, thanks to her incredibly intelligent and insightful take.

  • It's like she forgot she was supposed to act.

  • @lisambofoh Another whacko telling blatant lies. I guess your definition of acting is standing there looking like a corpse, eh? Or the complete opposite of Sutton's beautifully nuanced, expressive performance. Bravo! XD

  • @luvpinoys what the fuck. This is fucking Sutton Foster. I want to see you sing this song. She did it beautifully. This is actually one of my favorite versions.

  • @justmeandtommy And Taylor Swift is in no way better than eithter! I just hope she's mediocre, at best. ;_;

  • @justmeandtommy I agree, and thankfully someone else sees without the Lea Michele blinders!!! I love Sutton; she is my favorite Broadway actress, but it takes a certain person to play Eponine...and sadly Sutton is not that. But she's amazing in other roles. :)

  • @superspecialawsome13 lea michele has just started to grow and develop (in my opinion) sutton on the other has a more matured voice ... in this version i feel sutton is "trying to hard". with the song on my own to me theres only one person who can sing it like i want it to be sung and thats still LEA SELONGA... nobody topped it.. YET!

  • Someone who says that Sutton will never become a legend is crazy. She went from happy upbeat, jazzy Anything Goes to monochrome, melancholy Les Miserables. Thats a big shift to me.

  • @nicoleguedes she's better than Chaston Harmon or whoever the heck they have singing on tour right now. I was so disgusted.

  • i dont see whats so shitty about this performance...yea the acting was a BIT off but im distracted by her enchantingly beautiful voice

  • @nicoleguedes no not at all. she's actually really good for someone who is as young as she was here.

  • A WARNING to all posters: If you don't WORSHIP Sutton Foster, I will flag down all your comments. I don't believe in diversity of opinions. Negative opinions of her are NOT welcome! And you can't hide from me. Rermember me: I am the famous WALT1896 with the 200 Youtube accounts and I will track YOU down! Wherever you see any of my usernames (walt1896, mmbr01rff, etc.), you know that marking YOUR comments as SPAM can't be far behind!

  • Crappy recording! But otherwise not bad for someone 13 years old.

  • Comment removed

  • @wait1896 You are so right. No matter how they keep praising Sutton and no matter how many Tony Awards she gets, she'll never be the legends that Merman and LuPone are!

  • @mmbr01rff you know what's funny? There are hundred if not thousands of people who will never be legends like Patti and Ethel. That doesn't mean they aren't great performers in their own right. Seeing as how well she is doing I'm pretty sure she really couldn't care less that you think she won't be a legend.

  • @nicoleguedes

    Lets see you do better.

  • @mdiamse I do see why people think she's overrated, but I don't think this is awful. She could have used more guidance in this portrayal, but it's good that she has a strong enough voice to pull this off.

  • @joshgardell Performers sometimes have very little choice in how they are to execute a certain role. Coaches and/or directors often have the final say in staging and musical nuance.

  • Comment removed

  • Hmm... I don't think the director asked Sutton to execute Eponine as "looney tunes"...

  • She obviously didn't read the book or study the character via the experts (Ruffelle and Saonga). Eponine is NOT a lunatic!

  • Comment removed

  • @joshgardell I don't think she totally sucked. Her vocals were quite strong, but I suspect since she was a relative newbie, she didn't quite know how to balance things yet and she overdid the acting, which was why Eponine appeared like a lunatic here.

  • @joselitog1 Don't be too PC. She sucked.

  • vocally she is fantastic. But she is sooo tall. lol. I think she is a broadway queen!! but she is better for other roles. She still does this very well.

  • Too "trying hard."

  • Haters back off! I saw her in this tour and she was the most incredible Eponine I've ever seen - not just vocally but acting-wise as well. Everyone was dead silent during On My Own and on the edge of their seats. One of the most thrilling moments of theatre I've ever witnessed. Afterwards, everyone was asking who this girl was. It's no surprise she ended up winning the Tony two years later. Saying she's "squeaky" and basing your comment off of a poor video recording is just ridiculous.

  • @mdiamse they probably mean tall

  • Comment removed

  • Sutton is amazing in anything she sings. But she was definetly the best in Thoroughly Modern Millie, in my opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • @tWiLigHtnMuSiCx3 Millie was her best. Eponine is simply not her role.

  • @anafor2un To this one, I agree.

  • why all the hating on sutton foster? i love lea salonga and she was such a fantastic eponine but so was sutton. sutton obviously had a different take on the character of eponine. and that's what i love about musical theatre! getting to see all the different interpretations on a character. i love going to shows more than once and seeing the same character be completely rethought.

  • @MsSkimbleshanks Most people don't even know she was ever on Les MIz. She's definitely not known as one of the "fantastic Eponines."

  • Sorry, although I hate Philiphinos, Foster doesn't measure up to Salonga in acting (she acts like a looney here), moreso in singing (she can't compare to Salonga's admttedly smooth and precise attack on the notes -- whether they be high or low).

  • yeah sutton is great but I'll go for Lea Salonga :)

  • OK WHO COMPARING SUTTON AND LEA IS LIKE COMPARING APPLES AND ORANGES. THEY ARE BOTH GREAT PERFORMERS BUT THEY EACH EXCEL IN DIFFERENT AREAS.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow. Who's the imbecile flagging everyone's comments? People, I'm passionate about this show, yes, but, Jesus, show some restraint, calm down, take a deep breath and realize there are more important things in life than flagging comments of Sutton's incredible performance. Some people like her more than Lea, that's neither an insult to Lea or an attempt to downgrade her talent. It's a matter of opinion--I like Lea-- but, to me, Sutton is a billion times better. Deal with it.

  • I didn't know she was on Les Miserables. hm

  • I've seen her do better.

  • i. am. crying.

  • Anyone who says that Sutton can only play happy-go-lucky leads can suck it. She's a goddess.

  • Um, Glee's Lea MIchele, who does a horrible version of this song, sounds better.

  • @mdiamse Um, Glee's lea Michele is also an amazing singer who does a wonderful version of this song. Although you must be right that Sutton Foster (a Tony award winning performer might I add) just doesn't do a good version of this song. Yea. Right.

  • Great belting but it's not needed until the end! She nails the notes but misses the innocent, compassion that Eponine really has for Marius ... she is love ... not angry until the middle section ... after that she is filled with love ... not anger - love can be forceful but she is ANGRY! I love Sutton but her stage direction was off ...

  • @MadisonBrooks Disagree. Read Victor Hugo's novel, and you'll see that not only is Eponine just a tad angry at Marius (for not loving her) but also intent on allowing him to die at the barricades, because if she can't have him, no one can! So I think anger is a great interpretation of the song!!

  • Saw her in L.A. 5 times and once in San Diego. Has been couple of yrs since I last saw this straight thru and it's still incredible to me how smart, subtle expressions; minimal, yet powerful gestures; movement in time to music; and attention to orchestrations can make such an overdone song seem new again + evoke such distinct feelings. No changing original orchs to "revitalize" necessary, as done in the 25th ann tour. Sutton singlehandedly gave song a "makeover" by the sheer power of her acting.

  • this is one the many reasons to love sutton

  • Nice. Very nice, but I prefer her other version which I think is basically exactly the same time and all just a different day. But you are amazing anyway Sutton! XD. The other version is wowowow.

  • SICK SICK SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • sutton foster is my hero....nuff said

  • Sutton is my life.

  • she is fabulous. i loved that silence after "KNOOOOOWN" absolutely chilling. and i have to say i think this is my favorite despite that i love her's, and both Leas' renditions I think this got the most balance between great acting and great singing.

  • @MickeyT1129 Look at Marissa McGowan's performance....she is my absolute favorite Eponine.

  • @bettismarie She and that Celia woman fared much better in this role. If Sutton were a skater, she would be comparable to Irina Slutskaya who just attacked, attacked, and attacked (no genuine grace or tenderness in her performance).

  • her voice is amazing!! love her interpretation of the song. I only wish she would use her arms more.

  • On "known", she is so powerful. Love her voice.

  • does anyone know who her marius was?

  • @illbeastonishing16 I believe Tim Howard was playing Marius in this production.

  • im obsessed with her.

  • shes amazing! i love les mis! Shes going to be an extra on svu! she should be more than and extra!

  • best version of this song ever. you better sing, sutton.

  • Nope. Definitely not the best version! Listen to Lea Salonga on here. Foster gets the job done but her vocals are harsher, more nasal, and the higher notes in particular sound like she's straining.

  • @FOOFOOKITTY I have heard Lea Salonga. I like both. The 10th anniversary recording is my favorite, but Sutton's giving this her ALL. The emotion is amazing. I wish there was a professional recording of Sutton singing this song.

  • @FOOFOOKITTY But at least she hits the higher ones. I prefer Sutton.

  • @MATTYandMUSIC You means she squeaks the higher notes. Salonga's singing is perfect.

  • @annief31 Umm . . she does not squeak.

  • @MATTYandMUSIC Sutton's known to be an expert at squeaking the notes. Not a surprise there.

  • @af2un I definitely would not classify what she does as squeaking, but whatever.

  • Comment removed

  • @FOOFOOKITTY I totally agree, particularly at the high notes that Salonga hits perfectly. I adore Sutton in Millie, though.

  • this is the third national tour of les mis. and sutton is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this interpretation IS the best out there. fuck lea michelle. sutton makes the world go round <3

  • i wish someone had the video of the pittsburgh clo's performance of this! ashley spencer sang it, it was AMAZING....best i've heard yet. <3 ON MY OWN <3

  • AMAZINGGG,, probably the best interpretation of this song i've heard.

  • I saw her perform this role in 1999, or maybe it was 2000. My first exposure to Les Mis, absolutely stunning. Of course nobody knew her name back then.

  • fucking hell she can sing

  • She is incredible! How old is she there? Also, do you think that 14 years old is too young to play Eponine?

  • Eponine is 17 years old in the play. 14 is much to young because your voice is not close to mature enough to sing her part. also you wont be profesioanally cast as Eponine until your 18. although Eponine shoul have a youthful crying voice like Frances Rufelle (who created the role) 14 is not quite old enough. a few more years dear! =]

  • 14 isnt too young, if your in a school produciton that is... im going to be in the school edition at my theater school ina few months, and im auditioning for yougn cosette, because im 12 and eponine is my dream role, but im still too young. i guess you could pull it off, just not professionally yet.

  • to answer your first question, it looks like Sutton was 25 when she was in Les Mis.

  • sutton foster literally is my hero.

    she inspires me so much

  • I <3 SUTTON FOSTER!

  • she's a lovely eponine with a beautiful voice
