This song is pensive at worst if you listen to the music and not just the words. I think the video is perfect. They're working at the funfair, not visiting it. A lonely life but one that was actually lived. Lots of friends but noone you would dare get attached to. Maybe the band is using this video to dictate the mood of the song. Why would you say the artist is wrong instead of checking your own interpretation? Would you ignore all but the primary colors in a painting?

Little known fact: This song was written by Bob Dylan and Ketch Secor. Dylan started the song and wrote the verse and Secor (from Old Crow Medicine Show) wrote the verses and finished it.

He wrote it for Peckinpaw's move "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" which Dylan acted in. The chorus never made it to an album but Ketch Secor was entranced by it so he wrote this song and the credits read "Dylan/Secor" on the OCMS cut.
