I believe the point of the spot was to show how most European city cars are not as "substantial" as the ones Ford makes. They are "lightweights", so to speak.

I thought the point was to show that when someone desires a car, their old desire is replaced with a new one. It shows what happens to their "old desires"

The last scene in the davert proves this by the man taking his car out of his garage then seeing the new mondeo. He no longer loves his car, he desires the mondeo and decides to get rid of it.
