  • robert and simon just proving they were about to conqure the world. going out and playing a song that really wasn't complete yet and playing it like it is already a classic. at this point the band knew what they would be doing for the next 3 decades.

  • This is better than the original! And what a good opening of the French show.

  • @Kanarie1973

    In hinsight....

  • This is a great rock song !!!

  • If only I understood French.

  • You know, i have to to say that i'm allergic to ''Boys don't cry'' but ''A forest'' fucking rocks, i'm really amazed about the two sides of this band.

  • 12 people sucks!!

  • LOL TOLHURST, KICKS ASS!!!

  • back in the day when music was still good. Forward the video to 1:17 for the song

  • Comment removed

  • ¡EPIC!

  • 11 people dont have a fucking clue of what good music is

  • Tight...really tight

  • What a hit in the face it was back then for a 13-yr old boy to listen to such a thing

  • TX TX TX for posting!

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE this .... so great to hear them early on.

  • Closer to punk! The Cure's A forest cover by the Clash!

  • Closer to punk!

  • A lot more edgy than the studio release

  • niceee.hehe Robert is only 20 on this video :P like me now ^^

  • awesomeness thankxx

  • The Cure, for me, will always be Simon, Lol, and Robert. They made some of my favorite stuff with that lineup.

  • (Y) great

  • Everyone talks about Boris, but damn, Lol is tight!!!

  • @TheNiteNite Never understood why his skills were knocked so often. Lol (best name ever) was indeed an incredibly tight and very, very decent drummer.

  • richard hell & the voidoids. blank generation. such a good song. 0:08

  • A Forest, 1979, My God. So pure !..

  • Une trouvaille cette vidéo

  • what are the lyrics here?

  • One of my fav Cure songs... Never gets old.

  • What a shame we have to get old..........

    He was sooo cute then.

  • A RAW DIAMOND ! thanks, thanks, thanks !

  • just how i remember them when they suported generation x at the greyhound in croydon!

  • I love this version! The Drummer is sick!

Robert Smith looks like Ben Stiller!

  • @ffrmasterful

Thats Lol on drums. Actually he is doing awesome. I loved Lol, but he did drag the band down at one point. Wonder what he is up to now days

  • @timepope - He has a band called Levinhurst with his wife, and is about to tour North America. He's also 52 today.

  • AMAZING version!!! Pure treasure!

  • so fucking good.

this was exactly 31 years ago today.

  • the intro is too long. but after 1:20 it's great.

  • This is tight, thanks to the uploader and the bands lawyers for not deleting it.

  • Cant belive this was made in 1979.....EPIC!

  • I've always wanted to play this song in my car while I'm driving down a lonely road late at night with thick trees (a forest) on either side of me :)

  • wow, talk about tearing up the bass line!

  • great !

  • This version i-At Night- s more punkish, like it, although I prefer A Forest.

  • love this song!!!!!!!

  • LUV DIS VERSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Holy shit. This version is amazing!!

  • Une version très "Joy Division"...

  • love porl thompson, but smith doesn't play enough guitar anymore.

  • That was not at The Bataclan, but in the Theatre de L'Empire in Paris.

  • Thank God I saw them twice, this is so magic

  • Killer Cure song!

  • Vanity killed the Cure. they became mainstream popular but it seemed to effect the raw quality when broadcast regulations required a more cleaner sound (live performances were exempted from this rule). And so Video killed the radio star for sure. and that was the very first song MTV played knowing they would kill Rock n Roll. Smash your TV now

  • The song's about the book The Stranger by Camus. So any ideas that this a pro-fascist or racist song disregards what he was writing about. Unfortunately people who are fascist and racist would prefer it to mean something it doesn't.

  • SOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOD !!!!!!! This is real music.

  • This is so great!

  • Incredible, I never knew this song had an original "coked-up" version. No offense to the boys as they are GODS, but this version is much faster compared to the "LSD" version and video we are used to...and look at Robert right around 3:40-4:00 minutes. He is actually having a guitar/coke/orgasm.....probably seeing colors come out of the guitar.

    GENIUS fukkers they were....

  • @sdwolfcub "coked-up" version!!! - that is too funny...

  • @sdwolfcub Derp.

  • My heart, my blood and my soul...! Thx Cure for your perfection...!

That's one of the best version i ever seen...

    Forever CURE...!

  • wow!!!!! Totally amazing. I love it.

  • Just perfect. Merci!

  • Thank you.

  • best version by far u can c the eal Smith

  • That's a trip I've never seen Robert Smith young and without the dreary make up. I like him better with the make up makes for a more dramatic show.

  • WOW ! Robert with a pink trousers :)

Certainly one of the single videos where there is Matthiew Hartley.

    Thank you

  • Priceless. Thank you for putting this up. It's so interesting to compare this to the Joy Division-New Order transition happening around the same time, the live version of "I Remember Nothing" in particular.

  • holy shit. thats robert smith?

  • AWESOME!!!

  • This is a song about when Robert used to wear a dress and ride the trains

  • spectacular upload

    BRAVO!

    cri

  • It's certainly in English.........the original version was called At Night. Following a change of lyrics, the song became 'A Forest'. Saw them 5 months after this in the UK. One of my favourite gigs ever!!!

  • Ah man the last moments of when i still thought Smith was hot! Um can someone explain to me what he's saying? Is it in French or what? Please Answer if you've got a good guess, i'm really curious. Oh and this version is amazing. Even if i don't understand it.

  • wow, this is realy nice....

  • check it Lil

  • Wow! One of the Best Posts Ever! Thanks!

  • That was fucking great! Didn't realize how long they were out before we got to hear them here in the states. Shit I was eight years old when this was made (1979). Thanks KillerPunk, hopefully when we cross over heaven will allow us to fully re-experience those times.

  • "It's just a long way home, a long way home..."

    GENIAL

  • best version i'v heard, raw simple and honest

  • This is why you tube is the "fucking bomb' Awesome Dude how did you get your hands on this.

  • Thank you for posting, awesome, merci bien !

  • Smith with pink trousers?

The goth years still had to come ;)

Amazing song they made with this.

It's right from the first time you hear it!

  • Oh my God!! itsss Amazinggg!!!!! Differentt lyricssss, incredibleeee, the best yearssss of the band!! its a tresure, thankss for putt this on air, priceless!!

  • THANKS FOR POSTING

  • Wow!!! Thanks for sharing!!!

  • wahh x-ray specs and devo in one intro... that must have been one awesome show

and robert smith was still cool back then, good stuff

  • save the forests! save the dark album for last ...& herald a new arty album & offshore record contract instead; until then, release a bunch of series E.P.'s until a new keyboardist is found...

  • the lyrics are just all different nice piece of history

  • Absolutely fantastic! A piece of Cure history.

    Thanks for sharing :)

  • Awesome! Thanks so much for putting this on YouTube!

  • love Bob's trousers ^^

  • nice. they were cool from the start, before we or they knew it. They probably knew it though.

  • Great find.

  • pretty damn rad

  • Wow, this is straight up Punk Rock..wow...the tempo is on point...Sounds Sweet!!!

  • holy damm headfucking shit...evil nises

  • This is amazing. Fantastic performance. Better than the recorded version, oh and great pants RS is wearing there.

  • jaja , it has different lyrics , the cure are just amazing ! <3

  • Awesome pre-version, it´s more like their first album...Isn´t it Blondie at the begining?

  • fking genius

  • awesome performance

  • God, Smith looks so young and... normal. Pants aside.

  • @mushumushushoe

Yeah, when you could actually run a comb through his hair without him squealing!

  • @mushumushushoe I thought you were gonna say skinny, but yeah normal too

  • Nice version!!!!

    Great song.

00:32 what's the name of the song????

  • You ain't seen the Cure till you've seen 'em in Paris!

I like the French. They 'got' The Cure like we did in the UK.

I miss Antoine on UK TV...

  • More than we did in the UK. Which might explain why they rarely play the UK, and when they do rarely more than one date/location.

  • The Cure were HUGE in the UK.

  • The key word is "were", their stock is really down from the 90s onwards, which personally I think is a shame.

  • Mid to late eighties, really.

I don't think it's a shame, they had their moment and their declining audience reflects the declining quality of their output.

  • Wow what great pants he wears XD

Respect!

  • Geez i just realised that that was robert in the pink pants....he really can play the guitar??!!....what a great sound they had from the beginning - true talent

  • che storia 'sta versione, bella proprio !!

  • Belíssimo!

  • ......30 years ago... ......thanks The Cure :-)

  • Souvenir souvenir !

  • Very nice mate. Great version.

  • wow. never knew of this version. Thanks.

  • geil...

  • Good gosh. Seeing Robert Smith here reminds me that I used to be young and skinny too. He may be a fat panda now, and that comment is gentle humour. But the talent, and the youthful voice, goes on relentless. This is a fantastic song. And, yes, the Cure is totally unique, and they have transcended their success and remained kind of out there, away from the crowd.

  • Wow, they were really unique, unlike any other band of that time. They don't really sound too new wave, not too punk, not power-pop, it's like their own sound unique to all genres. I love it! They deserve all the praise they get.

  • the vid clips from 0:01-0:32, isn't from MTV?

  • no it s from chorus (french tv

  • This is a great video from start to finish!! It has a nice ethereal flow to it!

I love early Cure! Great electricity here!!

  • damn he was only 20 when he performed here. That's my age right now. Only if people knew what he was going to become.

  • o wooooooow what an awesome version!!!!!!!!!

    L'artiste : Blondie

  • thank you, mercy, danke,... :-)

  • What is the name of the song between 0.05 and 0.08 ????

Le temps ou The Cure était encore The Cure.

  • yes

  • 4 éves takony gyerek voltam akkor.. :) Sok minden megváltozott azóta...

  • mon dieu ! trente ans deja !

  • the best band, the cure for all of us...

  • shit, accidentally rated it 1 star i meant to rate it 5

  • geant!! divin!! c est the cure!!!

  • He looks trashed. And not the good kinda trashed. Like the "why did I get so messed up before having to do something important, I am gonna pass out" trashed. I am often there. Not a good place to be.

  • i love,, i fucking love youtube by things like this.

also,, oh my god, that french tv show was very advanced to the epoch :O wow, very cool (better than the mtv nowadays)

    awesome version :)

  • @camadai Yes! :)

  • someone know the lyrics of this?

    thanks

  • HaHaHaHa!!! "Tochurst", "At Night"!!! It's so funny!!!

  • awesome trippy title sequence =D

  • genial cette version j adore !!!!! c est une des plus belles de the cure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pink pants killer! ahah

  • OOOOOOOOHHHHH My GOD LOOOK AT MYYYYY Robert He is sooooooooooo young!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it takes around 2 minutes...but than a nice surprise to see them performing !!! l like it !!!

  • this is totally rotten!!

  • dope slaks

  • actually this is "at night" They placed both songs later as individual songs on seventeen seconds :-)

  • i like the nasty synth sound.

  • kinda like it more than the original version :)

  • Wow this is extremely early Cure. Michael Dempsey is on Keyboards. I've never seen anything with him playing in The Cure. Even the lyrics are different. I always thought this song material was written during the "Seventeen Seconds" album. Thanks for uploading it, it was a real treat.

  • Matthieu Hartley is on keyboards lol, He's a family friend and teaches me the odd bit of guitar.

  • Fantastic version, excellent work that has been damaged in the study.

  • awesome version!!!!!

though i still love the slow version of it they do live, like they did at orange a bit better

  • Heavenly good : )

  • who the hell is Tochurst? it's Tolhurst (1:43)

  • lol was a better drummer than cooper
