Just another reason why The Wire is the greatest show of all time. The way Michael even gives that one last glance to Dukie. He is walking away from his childhood and his innocence and entering a world in which there is no return.
I remember watching this scene and thinking that, when Marlo and snoop stood there listening to Michael talk and then asking him to sit was a HUGE sign of respect -
Anyone remember the scene when old face Andre came to talk about a re-up and he tried to sit down? Marlo told him that "you ain't stayin long" (paraphrase). Such a stark contrast
i remember watching the commentary for this scene. they said it was summer or something but they had to make it look like fall/winter, so they had to try really hard to maneuver the cameras to only show a sliver of the scenery because there were full trees surrounding the area... plus the actors were really hot wearing winter clothes
to understand the wire you have understand every scene why this such and such is happening reading some of your guys comments is that you are on point with it man this show was the best since the sopranos
did anyone else get the chills when michael looks at snoop? the emotionaless cold stare she has looking at him, like the devils (said it again) henchman (woman).
I know very well what it means, so do not make wrong assumptions, unless you feel like engaging in a conversation about the depths of stoicism according to different ancient Greek philosophers. Thank you.
@ConcaCon Lol, funny how you bring up the philosophical side of it. Go on, I'd love to hear your reasoning for Snoop looking like a "serene stoic angel of death". While you're at it, you can educate me on Zeno. Don't try too hard.
god this scene is so powerful, Michael pretty much sells his soul to the devil (marlo) because of his hatred for his mothers boyfriend and to protect his little brother, before he goes to talk to him, he stands there with dukie, his one true friend who is there to support him and they look at each other one last time before michael makes the decision that changes things forever.
i'd have to say, definitley one of marlos' more benevolent moments...never really gave a shit about anyone else, cept for giving money to the kids , and this
@caponex55 Marlo only handed out money to the kids so they would know he was the HNIC, not cuz he cared about them. He was interested in Michael from jump so when Michael just came to talk to Chris, he knew Michael was bout to join up, so why talk shit and be mean b4 the deal is done? Marlo dont' giv a fuck bout nobody but himself, but he is a smart businessman.
@tgodd he also recruit kids cuz it's not likely they'd snitch if caught. they usually don't get charged with felonies for drug possession as a teen. and, if they act up, you can whup their ass without having to worry about them coming back on you. like i said, Marlo's smart.
Marlo didn't even know about the situation with Officer Walker. The last time Marlo saw the ring was when Omar robbed him at the poker game. I'm guessing Marlo thought Michael took the ring back from Omar. If you can take something from Baltimore's most notorious stick-up man and live, then you really do deserve to keep it. To the victor goes the spoils.
This scene is parallel to the Michael/Dukie goodbye at the end of the series. Here Dukie looks at Mike as if to say "Why you going to mix with Marlo, Snoop, and them",knowing that his life will never be the same but Michael feels like he as no other choice. At the final goodbye, Michael asks Dukie why he is going to go mix with the arabers who shoot dope, knowing that it will change his life forever but Dukie also feels as if he has no other choice.
I still don't understand what Michael did for Marlo and Chris to see all his potential. Just the way he carried himself i guess. Mike was a street prodigy.
Marlo really didn't have much of a background when he made his debut in season 3. He just sort of appeared out of nowhere and started dominating the drug trade and taking over shit. Then again so did Chris and Snoop.
This scene was sad for two reasons. For one Michael made the decision to join a heartless Drug Lord to avenge the alleged rape of both him and his little brother. Secondly, the look between him and Dukie both knowing that because of this decision that he would never be the same again.
Marlo is pretty cold hearted but for some reason, I sorta like him and wonder how he got to this point. What lead him in the position he's in. Shm and I LOVE Chris and Snoop!
Marlo makes his 1st appearance in season 3 and ur right, they don't really give u da back story. it's left 2 ur imagination. i'd like 2 think though his attitude is part of the larger point. the game gets more fierce and each generation that plays becomes harder, hardened & colder than the previous 1. even avon had a softer side, lol.
Yeah, I remember how Avon dealt with Cutty when he was supposed to get that boy and didn't because the game wasn't in him anymore... I wonder how Marlo would've reacted to that. I do prefer how things were done in the old days though. There was a lot more respect.

@abctime35 I was referring to the last time Michael and Dukie looked at each other before he went to talk with Marlo. Not the last time they ever saw each other... that was in Season 5.
@danielhiryu great observation....I would add the look Snoop gave Marlo, she's never really looked that vulnerable or in need of approval/direction. Brilliant scene, eye acting.
@Safo8888 yeah i totally agree with you, when he says he thought he could catch up with chris and marlo raises his eyebrow, its like he knows he's got the boy now and chris now has his attention, waiting to hear what he has to say, and snoop looks at marlo almost like "what do you think?" or waiting for his decision.
@danielhiryu great observation....I would add the look Snoop gave Marlo, she's never really looked that vulnerable or in need of approval/direction. Brilliant scene, eye acting.
anyone else think Dukie could've talked michael out of going 2 marlo 4 help??? i mean damn, he almost would've been better off just coppin some heat on his own & doing da job himself, lol. i'm not advocating murder but when his only other alternative was being indebted & 2 a drug kingpin, was murder really all that bad???
can u really believe that? at this point the boys knew marlo's crew was responsible 4 disappearing bodies & they'd already seen the dead body Dukie showed em in the vacant from episodes earlier. do u really think Michael thought Chris would do nothing more than send that guy away -- especially knowing how enraged his was over being sexually abused?
michael couldn't do the hit. he'd probably talk himself out of it. parentally michael's stepfather could've had some mental hold over him. it had to be done from someone who wasn't michael.
hate 2 say it like this, but anybody else think mike would've been better off just handlin Bug's father by himself w/out having 2 be indebted 2 Marlo? he spent all that time saying he didn't like feeling like he owed somebody and yet he had 2 know Marlo's crew wasn't genuine (no way they were his real friends).
LOL, come 2 Texas then. I will show u some thugged out 6-1, 215 pound thick necked football players (14!!!!) who'd fight u like a man if it came down 2 it. LOL, nah, but seriously my point wasn't 4 michael 2 step 2 Bug's father like that. Of the 4 boys, Michael was a thinking man even at 14, like chess, considering all possibilities. Did he really think debt 2 Marlo was the best alternative? I think he could've found another way 2 solve this problem. just my 2 cents.
Well Mike is still a kid maturing here. Once he got the murder game under his belt he became something different. At this point he still needed to put some trust in someone. I don't care how hard you are we all need someone we can go too. Hell Omar had Butchie to express his feelings too. Only cat that really stands emotionally alone is Marlo and that's cause he's psychopath.
Actually SPANKY, YOU were correct the first time: The psychopath is defined by a psychological gratification in criminal, sexual, or aggressive impulses and the inability to learn from past mistakes.
At first I thought so too but then I read the terms are almost interchangeable as once term was psychopath and then it was changed to sociopath. Probably a good topic of discussion though.
LOL...not the same. Butchie and Omar really had a connection... a personal friendship as well as business. Remember when Butchie offered to cover Omar for a bounty on Avon. Omar also handed Butchie money for his "pain". Vinson was not a friend...he was Marlo's bank and adviser but not a friend.
SHEEWO - 100% right. One of the few times I can remember Marlo showing any compassion/emotion. This, and when he was in prison screaming at Monk and Chris. This was certainly one of the few compassion ones tho!
astewart2005 are you kiddin me? kids make the best killers! Why you think in Africa most of the resistance fighters and guerillas are under 18? In some countries people just go 'head and kill the kid just to be safe.

hate 2 say it like this, but anybody else think mike would've been better off just handlin Bug's father by himself w/out having 2 be indebted 2 Marlo? he spent all that time saying he didn't like feeling like he owed somebody and yet he had 2 know Marlo's crew wasn't genuine (no way they were his real friends).

mike was 14 here....no 14 year old is going to do any damage against a grown man
Safo8888 3 years ago 3

Only cat that really stands emotionally alone is Marlo and that's cause he's psychopath.

sociopath

i stand corrected
spankybighead 3 years ago
Actually SPANKY, YOU were correct the first time: The psychopath is defined by a psychological gratification in criminal, sexual, or aggressive impulses and the inability to learn from past mistakes.
Wikipedia.

At first I thought so too but then I read the terms are almost interchangeable as once term was psychopath and then it was changed to sociopath. Probably a good topic of discussion though.
spankybighead 2 years ago
Sociopathy is a loosely-defined term that may be used to refer to:
Psychopathy
U are correct, they are interchangeable.

and he had vinson
Safo8888 3 years ago
LOL...not the same. Butchie and Omar really had a connection... a personal friendship as well as business. Remember when Butchie offered to cover Omar for a bounty on Avon. Omar also handed Butchie money for his "pain". Vinson was not a friend...he was Marlo's bank and adviser but not a friend.

Na it's not about age, he wasn't mentally prepared.
But after Chris n Snoop trained him, he kill like it's no body business.

This is such a good scene. There's only like 20 words said throughout the whole clock, but the story's being told just with the looks on their faces

SHEEWO - 100% right. One of the few times I can remember Marlo showing any compassion/emotion. This, and when he was in prison screaming at Monk and Chris. This was certainly one of the few compassion ones tho!
robertmurray7782 3 years ago 3
this was a good scene it shows how kids get caught up in big nigga shit and also the transformation from a lil nigga to a gorilla on the real

astewart2005 3 years ago 4
astewart2005 are you kiddin me? kids make the best killers! Why you think in Africa most of the resistance fighters and guerillas are under 18? In some countries people just go 'head and kill the kid just to be safe.

Had to be done, he showed he learned well and was the better at the game than her. Prepared himself better, thought things out more.
