No, sometimes I use two of each color or even three of each color, you could use as many as you would like. Also, you can use as many colors as you want, you don't have to use just three. I have made some with ten colors or even 20 colors. Another thing, is you can do ten knots instead of three, you could even use more then ten if you wanted to. There are so many different things you can try to find the way you like best =)
