I remember in 4th grade one day one of the students was absent. At storytime the teacher explained that he had tourettes and what that was and that she wouldn't mention any names but she knew he was being bullied and he had tried to explain to the bullies about it but it didn't work so he asked her to explain. Unfortunately, I don't think her talk worked at all... if anything the bullying seemed worse afterwards because more kids knew. Why are children so cruel to children that are different?

I have Tourette's . I have had it all my life. My Dad is a preacher and prayed for healing and had others pray for me. Over all most of the systems are gone. I still have it ,just not has bad. I believe in the power of prayer! I also believe you can achieve any thing you put your mind too, people are special just the way we are. What a boring life it would be if we were all the same. I have a learning disability as well. I am happy with who I am , and what God has blessed me with.

The only thing different about him are the tics he can't control. He loves to play video games, build with legos and draw. He plays soccer and likes baseball. It has many faces...I keep twitching all the time, I was not bullied. I was the bully, but managed a PhD. I have a quicker glove than anybody I know. Try a game: have someone hold (hang a ruler), you put your thump and index around it, just touching. person drops without warning, - good party game. Try to catch. I need an inch. I was alway a goalie on any school team
But, it comes with ADHD - after graduating I did not hold to a job for more than 2 years. not fired, just can't do it.

It becomes personal when someone with that disease calls another person a "Nigger" or "Faggot" , "Bitch" or "Gay".
We are tolerant of you having this condition, but just realize other people are hurt really bad by your words and some end up commiting suicide. This is not acceptable!

@DJLunasf people with tourette's aren't stupid, if they have coprolalia they know that they might hurt people's feelings, but that has nothing to do with them as a person. they can't do anything about it. and yes, it may not be acceptable, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the person with tourette's. and people who get bullied, they aren't getting bullied by people with tourette's. if they say something mean, it has nothing to do with tourette syndrome!!

I have Tourette's . I have had it all my life. My Dad is a preacher and prayed for healing and had others pray for me. Over all most of the systems are gone. I still have it ,just not has bad. I believe in the power of prayer! I also believe you can achieve any thing you put your mind too, people are special just the way we are. What a boring life it would be if we were all the same. I have a learning disability as well. I am happy with who I am , and what God has blessed me with.

My son has Tourette's Syndrome. It is not easy to live with. He no longer goes to regular school because of how cruel kids can be. He is a wonderfully talented and smart kid. The only thing different about him are the tics he can't control. He loves to play video games, build with legos and draw. He plays soccer and likes baseball. He also cries when his neck gets sore from the movements. I wish people would understand this isn't a joke. It is real.

Are people born with the disorder or can it develop anytime in life? I'm 37 and for the past year I have developed a tic which comes and goes. My jaw twitches a few times a minute when I read text. When it happens it's totally unexpected, when I read aloud it's worse.

i know a kid with tourettes
he cusses alot and the teachers dont understand so hes always getting detentions.
the kids laugh but i dont. i know its his problem he deals with everyday. he says shit and fuck and sometimes words like spik and nigger. one time a black kid was walking by when he said nigger and i had to completly explain it to him and he still was acting like a jack ass. i think i have a form or tourettes because my leg twitches all the time.

Do I have tourettes because i randomly twitch from time to time with my hands and face, i unconciously chew my toungue and jig my leg, i grunt cough and sniff uncontrolably (its only recently that i have noticed that i have done all of this but my mother said i have been doing it for years)

Fortunately mine is only motor and not verbal. However many of the spasms can become quite painful. But in your logic, if it hurts, I should just stop; right?

@BarbarishFTW No it isn't. If I could stop, I would. I've had to watch my parents crying because they thought I had a seizure disorder or tumor. I've had doctors try to convince me that it's my fault and that I should quit living my life and hide from the world. It's not in my mind. Until you've seen someone suffering from symptoms or intolerance from others, you can't know what it's like. It's impossible to completely understand it unless you have it and even then it's confusing at times.

Can you control it? Try this: try to hold it in for as long as you can can. What does it feel like? If it feels like you are all tense inside and can't think about anything else? If so, then you may have cause to think you have it. I'm not saying you do, but you may if it feels like that.
