Which version of Saturday's in Silesia is this? of all the versions of i've heard, this is the best with the 808 drums in the background. has a really nice snap to the snares.
Silesia is actually one of Poland's provinces. If you look at the single cover for the song and google "solidarnosc" in images it's the same logo/font used...actually even for the single cover they have the polish flag just like they do for solidarnosc. yay Canada, yay Polska! lol
@TrainmasterCurt Part of if used to be until world war 2, now it spreads in the south of Poland and north of Czech Republic, here it is exactly mentioned in relation to Polish martial law of Dec. 13th 1981, "the soldiers put the padlock on the door". Greets from Silesia to Canada - superb song:)
Amazing band. I saw them at the University of British Columbia Sub Ballroom (Canada) in early 1983. It was a great show. The album "Cold War Night Life" is an amazing album! It is an absolute "must buy". I wish this type of music (or band) was still around!
i wouldnt be surprised if Chris Lowe had heard this one - was big into that sound before the PSB days. thats why him and Neil teamed up , cos they liked this synth pop sound. and yeah - theres a similarity to Rent in the background chords. then again , its only about 4 chords.
Yes, I think you're right - I'm sure Lowe and Tennant must have listened to this track in the run-up to the penning of Rent. Both great tracks from a great musical decade.
@Lee71England Definitely they were influenced by a....Canadian group! Gotta love that, there is a similarity in RENT to this song, Cite Phosphore/City of Night is my favourite
@TrainmasterCurt Well, over the last year or so, I've discovered three Canadian acts I'd never heard of before (not much Canadian stuff makes it over to this side of the Atlantic), and I've been thoroughly impressed with all: Rational Youth, Spoons, and Martha Ladly.
I'll make sure I look for the track you mention...
I took a listen to Rent after reading your post. Agreed, these is a section of the rhythm in Rent that is strikingly similar. It could be totally coincidental, or perhaps Pet Shop Boys liked Rational Youth and this was their small tribute.
Used to go to a club when I was 14 (In belgium that's normal) that played E.B.M. and the DJ used to play 'Les meilleurs des mondes' (Remember when we used to dance to stuff like that!)
I searched for 8 months to find it in the record store. Found it!!
This is great! I remember the first night I heard these guys was during the massive civil-service strike that closed the CEGEPS (community colleges) in the early 80s. Buzzed and playing board games late in the evening in small-town Quebec, CHEZ 106, our local cutting-edge radio station from Ottawa, played this song. Loved it when I was a student at Heritage College and still love it. Thanks for sharing this with us. (An important part of Quebec's music history.)
Tracy Howe is effortlessly cool: Wonder Nerd. One of the best singer-songwriters you will ever hear. These guys are spectacularly brilliant: their albums shimmer with artistry and feeling!
Every great canadian band seems to have come from Montreal.

Very good observation. I am sure PSB lifted the tune from this great song.

Indeed THEY borrowed from RY slowed down and even the Lyric on Saturdays contains RENT Man. The melodies are pure RY no changes.
