I always wondered, what was the sense going to college and building debt, and when you get out , you may make more money, but for 2/3 of the time youre in the workforce, the extra money you made with a degree, went to paying off the loans . Or, Same difference is, moving to a larger City to land a better paying job, yet paying double for rent, spending more on gas in travel to and from work, and paying for parking garages. Stay in your home town, keep youre expenses down, and work at Mcdonalds.
So I'm in high school, and I consider myself a semi intelligent teen but lately what I've been reading is that going straight to work right out of high school may be a better alternative then going to college. What advice would you give to get my life started right out of high school?
@32LEM0NDR0P32 I didn't go to college after highschool. Sometimes I wish I had gone, other times I think it's better to wait. Just stay away from drugs and people without ambition and you'll be fine.
I never took any business classes in highschool yet I'm a junior.Ive taken Chemistry, AP Psych, US history ,Regular math.Is it too late to go to a business career? Thanks if you can answer this.
Your college experience is what you make it to be. 20K is nothing if you get a great education. I've grown tremendously thanks to Miami University and I've had two very rewarding internship opportunities. Sure, some of the subjects may not matter to me personally and I'm just "jumping through hoops" but the connections I make and the experiences I go through are definitely worth it.
College (the accredited and rigorous ones) as an institution is necessary to create a more informed and refined citizenry. In order to create the best society possible you want educated citizenry plain and simple. On the individual level, gaining the ability to read, write, and speak on complicated subjects is one of those intangibles which benefits a person professionally & personally. Also going to college would help argumentation skills e.g. defining what you mean by success ;)
I've always known that you didn't have to go to college to be successful, and that the colleges are draining money and wasting time with useless classes, but having a degree still makes some things easier and opens a few doors. For some people (like myself), the environment may also help to focus a person and help them to learn things, or at least get started in a field. There are pros and cons that must be weighed.
@GeorgeLRockwell87 But were can you apply for the good jobs? It seems like you need a degree for anything even to work at Mcdonalds.... I wish i could find something great without a degree.
@vfIskullangel I'm speaking more for the entrepreneur. If you have the Internet, you can gain skills. You may not be a professional, but you can gain enough skills to put together a side operation. There are others on here with much more information than I can provide, and it depends on your situation as well.
nice vid sir, but i think there is one thing everyone seems to missing. its the drive, talent, and networking. i know people who went to college and are unsuccessful today. I know people who didn't go to college and are unsucessful. whats the common trait with both of these groups? they had little ambition, real talent, and were not networking. i highly doubt mr. bill gates was sitting on his ass on his earlier years. same thing goes for the wealthy heart surgeon =)
Cant get a job with an degree in economics? Commercial Banks Securities Brokers Insurance Companies as underwriters, account executives, agents, and risk managers. Fortune 500 companies Public Utilities International Lending Institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank Market Research and Consulting Firms Chambers of Commerce and Trade Associations Labor Unions Can't believe you based something off what Jay Leno said.
@ScarletFierce aren't there police academy?? what would be the need for a degreee in criminal justice then? being a cop seems like a more hands-on career anyway. direct training would be more helpful.
@shasanni ok cool. but what about being an FBI agent or something like that? what about someone that wants to be a personal trainer? i have a boyfriend thats 23 and wants to be a personal trainer but wants to get a degree in fitness science or something. thanx lots.
@ScarletFierce personal trainer you could use a degree in kinesiology for. you're not going to understand anatomy on youtube lol. do NOT go to some expensive college for that though. the name doesn't matter as much. same thing for an fbi agent. you want a degree in perhaps criminal justice, bio, accounting. point of the matter if this hun: figure out what you want FIRST before you go to college. and watch out for dead-end majors that look fancy, but leave you with no job prospects. =)
While I'm not exactly advocating for the current college system (its costs are very inflated and it doesn't offer a whole lot of real-world experience), I would disagree with you about not needing to go to college. For most people, going for college is a good idea.
Many people do make it off well without college degrees, but there are many more who fall flat on their face with no where to go if they are without some sort of college degree. It really depends on the business. You need a college degree for engineering, science, medicine and law. You can try to get a good job in those fields without one, but good luck! Plus, if you have a child, and are able to send them to college, would you or would you not want them to go?
hey brad, keep up the good work, I've definitely been interested in being able to run my home based business, but just never quite got the foundation laid yet, but yeah definitely because of the online social network movement of today it'd definitely be a good time for the small and home based businesses to take off
College isn't for everyone. I've realized this. I've been struggling through it since I began. The best thing I got out of my education was a mere certificate that shows I'm competent repairing computers. This certification would have gotten me a good job 15 years ago, but I has less value since so many people have the same or similar certifications. The market has been flooded with people like me, so a degree is more desired by employers. I'm just wasting my time. College isn't necessary.
This is flawed logic. You name people like George Washington and Abe Lincoln where at that time of age it was impressive if you passed the 5th grade. Then you name people like Tiger Woods whom left Stanford to be a multi-millionare golfer and Clint Eastwood, who is a famous actor.
The average American shouldn't go to college it's not for everyone, and even those who get out of school now are flipping burgers with highschool drop outs.
At the end of the deal it's not what you know but who
so true my friend, most of us have been socially conditioned or brainwashed to believe that you need a degree to become successful. and let's face reality, most people pursue a college degree, mainly for the desire to get a high paying job, so it's really not about "LEARNING" at all, it's all about "EARNING". britney spears, jay z, 50 cent, lebron james, kobe bryant, tom cruise, michael jackson, never went to college or even graduated from high school, and look how successful they've became.
Im could say i am a software engineer but i didn't went to college because it was too expensive, instead i was at home doing my crazy "projects" that my parents were ashame of because i was "wasting my time" i've never stop learning even watching my high schools friends graduate, today i keep on researching and im CEO of a company with 30 employees.
What matter is to push yourself to the limits, i wanted to learn even more than my friends on college and i did!!
those guys were talented though. Let's mention ordinary people like you and me who never went to college (although i went for two years) and they became successful. There are lots of those people, lets learn from them instead of the super talented.
you dont look successful lol
