Damn its still hard to watch...I went to a bunch of games there..The circus...Field trips..Parents took their children to that parkin lot to teach em how to drive..It was a part of the city as much as any building downtown...I am glad the Bobcats got a new arena though instead of playin in another teams arena..I was at Camp Green when they did it and from down the street from the coliseum it was a hellova sound not knowin what the sound was...It sounded like WAR...
This is what they did to a $52 million dollar facility that was only 17 years old and still in it's prime. Charlotte's tax dollars gone to waste (as ususal). Charlotte will waste your tax dollars in a heartbeat. This is a shining example of it.
Why would the city of Charlotte get rid of this building after only 20 years of use especially when the Bojangles Arena which is a much older facility is still open and in use?
This was obscene!! This wonderful building was comfortable, traffic was easy in and easy out. There was no need for an arena uptown. We voted it down but city leaders did it anyway!! I lived there for 10 yrs, glad to be away from that city gov't. They made a mess of CMS school system also - always in turmoil.
I did not know it was a barn? I remember when it opened for the fall season of 88-89 the NBA where talking about their new buildings like the colisuem and the palace at their half time show. Just out of curiosity what was wrong with the building? Please tell me as the Charllotte Colisuem short life as always intrested me
Isnt that arena only 20 years old. Wow Charlotte must have a lot of money to spend on sports facillities to demolish an arena that was considered state of the art only twenty years ago.
Well, it wasn't really considered state of the art... it was just BIG. Compared even to arenas that were built around the same time (Palace of Auburn Hills, for example), it was a barn.
That said, I miss old school Hornets games there. That place got MFin LOUD.
That is the last place I saw the Dead play with Jerry Garcia in Spring of 1995 before he died. I loved that place and that parking lot... alot of memories :'{
So sad, this is where I first saw METALLICA in Feb. 1989. Hate to see it go. Charlotte is so stupid.They just had to have an areana in center city. so so SAD!!!
The roof on the Rennassiance Hotel right next door. The crazy thing was how powerful the first blast was. You can see the camera shaking...it wasn't the noise...it was just the force/energy of the explosion. It was really exciting.
Bad day.

CIty officials claimed that the Coliseum was on a side of town that wasn't convenient. They wanted Uptown to continue to grow as the city hub.

The taxpayers get screwed again. A perfectly serviceable coliseum gets blown up in favor of a new one downtown with not nearly as much parking.

What building was that from? It looks like you were on the roof of the building off to the left of where I was.

It shook my house, and I live a couple miles away at least.

It's amazing you can only get less than 20 years of service for an arena that size. I agree, taxpayers get screwed again.
