this is for olivermcummins. Sadly man, this song never broke the top 40! And it's one of his best songs! His first major hits were Every Kinda People in 1978 (#16) and Bad Case of Loving You in 1979 (#14). This song however was his first top 40 hit in the UK.
What a blast from the past!! Loved dancing around to this song, and also loved "Johnny and Mary". Neither song are musical masterpieces, but they sure are fun and bring back great memories!!
Always liked this song. Co-workers and I used to clean up a store at the end of the night to this song every night. It made cleaning up (mopping and such) much more fun...dancing around to this. People would look through the window at us, probably thinking we were nuts, but we had a blast! It was pretty funny.
Now, more importantly Ive not heard a smoother white male vocalist anywhere that I can recall. He could sing standards, funk and he could rock with the best of them, and he exuded class in every way. To the other point brought up about being a drinker....all of the coolest famous Brits were/are drinkers.the notorious group of Richard Burton, Richard Harris and the still surviving (likely pickled) Peter O'Toole (best man's name ever)
That is so funny, last time I was shopping they were playing Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak and loud enough for me to sing until I got to the self scan. The problem is some have the system set up so every 30 seconds or so they have reminders about specials with 10 seconds of silence before and after. Also heard Powerstation more than once.
Man, this song gets me moving and twitching everytime I hear it. Its when he started incorporating MIDI and synths and his Blue Eyed Soul. Its also extremely FUNKY! I love his line about hating phone rings! I can relate! Eff iPhones.
This is the one song I remember from Robert more than addicted to love this is even way before MTV even started a Video Pioneer classic just like toni basil's Hey Mickey around the same time late 70's
No, Robert Palmer made this song before Fox graduated Grammar school. There is a hint of Robert Palmer's Looking for Clues in Haus am See, but its very subtle. It's extremely common for todays artists to rip off others, because pop/rock in general has been pretty much covered. Still Robert Palmer was a musical genius and I think its insulting to compare today's music to this rare gem.
oh my I am really loving you tube. I had totally forgotten about this song and video!!! Only Robert Palmer could do such a stretch from his normal singing voice and still sound sexy and strong and seductive....what a singer! Love the song too, always did. As far as the video, yeah, it's wierd. It was late 70's or early 80's pre- Duran/MTV. Nothing sophisticated was being made then. I love it anyway!
Roberts music and video's kick the s!@# out of anything Michael Jackson ever did. But Robert is a natural white man so there wasn't any big production after his death. Or would that have been racist?

Does anyone else here suspect that a certain early Tom Hanks flick ripped off one of its memorable scenes from this video? (BIG, with Robert Loggia and Tom dancing on the big piano keyboard.) Or am I just slow, and this is something EVERYBODY knew?
Nice song, but horrible video, I thought the mines where bad, but this is just sad. At least he saved a lot of money making it, since they have to pay for their own videos.
tmpfan2, check out when the video was made - 1980. That time only very few music video clips were made and the quality is quite ok. Y'know, it wasnt about quality, it was more about fun and music. Ah the good old times omg i sound like my father.. :)
I heard he used toy instruments to make this video. Problems did arise, however, when Robert Palmer had to go on tour. Apparently every audience member behind the first row felt ripped off as they only saw the backing band perform.
A rotary phone in the video shows how much technology has changed since 1980. Today's youth couldn't survive without cell phones and text messaging. And yes, I always loved that song, going back to my college days at SUNY Binghamton.

I love the extremely literal and and narrative nature of early music videos. This and 10cc's "Dreadlock Holiday" video are the best examples. Great song from my favorite RP album.
He passed away in 2003 in Paris from a heart attack, September 26, 2003. His dearest fans just mourned the 5th anniversary of his tragic death. Robert will be missed.
