@MichaelKrary only underwater gold mining is an ecological threat, do you really think mining for gold really affect's the enviroment that much, we've only been doing it for 5000 years and sinkhole's, hurricane's, volcano's, and earthquake's have been around a lot longer than that..Maybe you should be more concerned with Al Gore's Pasminco zinc co. and all the pollution it creates

Tungsten is slightly more dense than gold and has about the same heat capacity. However, it has only about half the heat CONDUCTIVITY of gold. Thus, a tungsten-containing fake will feel cold in your warm hand for a shorter time than a pure gold one the same shape. A calorimeter should be able to detect a small piece of tungsten inside a gold bar. The most sensitive calorimeters are made by a company in MA whose business is life science, but for $ I'm sure they could help!
