  • I never get tired of watching it!!! Always inspiring...

  • Sublime. No other words to describe it.A true master at work

  • Amazing! It's such a treat to hear Steve Swallow on upright bass, too!

  • yeah.. pls ONE song with these gentlemen,, please !!

  • hehë_ì_fÈÊl_sO_lönèlÿ_tÕDÁý

  • ..... love ......

  • what is that thing sticking out of his headstock

  • @TrueMason it's a string dampner, it keeps open strings from resonating

  • what is that thing sticking out of his headstock

  • Thanks meesterbenja... sublime stuff

  • His comping is amazing!

  • so melodic, tone, long long time influence. great post. he still plays great. new clips of him up with bill that are amazing.

  • Jim Hall soft ball

  • Incredible!

  • Looks like he might have been a contemporary of Wes Montgomery.

  • What a great video......talk about understanding chord structure, and yet putting the song first. Thanks so much

  • Hall was my favorite in the 50s when I was just getting started as a jazz piano player -- this bass player is really good.

  • @johnbresnik The bass player is Steve Swallow, by the way. Along w/ Jim Hall and the drummer, this is three fourths of the Art Farmer Quartet, circa 1964.

  • He looks like he's gonna cry.... This is certainly not a master like Victor van Kampen...!

  • @alzhammer1

comparing jim at all to this youtube hack is the biggest joke ive ever seen of my 5 years on here

    jim is a legend

  • Jim Hall does'nt play a lot of notes to say something! for you musicians that like to play a lot o notes that don't say enough.

  • Most of the young "jazz" players I keep coming across are all about being technical. They forget to put their soul into their music.

  • I can't believe I got to see this guy in concert recently. He is truly amazing.

  • you can see at Eddie lang jazz festival in Monteroduni(italy)

  • This summer in my town!!!!

  • Amazing, fantastic...I love it.

  • JIm Hall is on H fo sho.

  • what is that device on his headstock near the nut?

  • String dampener invented and patented by George Van Epps. Later manufactured by Gibson for a short period of time. Very hard to find and expensive.

  • Oh I see, thank you. Don't see those much anymore.

  • wow. 1:50 First sweep picker?

  • My private instructor owns that exact guitar! he got hold of it as a teen in new york when jim hall sold it to buy a new one. it still plays excellent too he let me play it the other day! i can't beileve i found a video with it in it. gotta love jim hall

  • great playing, a Jazz legend!

  • Jim Hall, for those who listen, is the consummate master of the subtle, understated, introspective school of jazz guitar, and one who values the use of silence and space in his phrasing.

  • Who gives a rat's behind about the color, the performance is what has been recorded for posterity and it's grand makes me happy to be alive to enjoy it again and again .Thank you meesterbenja.

  • awsome guitar play, give a fuck bout black or white tv screen shit, he is just in the mood, i can feel him, thats the main thing, jim hall..keep it up in thanks for such video..nice!

  • Was the world really in black and white like that, or is it because it was on TV? Every time I see old stuf...films....TV.. even photos it's black and white and I'm wondering when stuff in the world got colored like we see it now. Seems like stuff in the 1900s up until the 60s was all black and white. I saw a picture of my mom and dad and even they were in black and white - but I was born in the 60s and always remember things being colored, even my mom and dad. So what gives?

  • moucon - yeah, I saw that "Calvin & Hobbes" strip, too. :)

  • What gives is that you are an idiot (rofl)

  • the short answer to your question is NO IT FUCKING WASN'T but it's kind of fun and romantic to imagine it that way. Especially when accompanied by chilled out jazz hollowbody guitars and double bass.

  • I was born in black and white , but now i'm in colour! so much better , damn I look good.

  • Haha so true, that's why Haneke made his movie "The White Ribbon" in black&white, because that was the only way he could picture the time around ~1913! (all photographs from that era are black&white)

  • Frank gambale is boring technical tasteless crap!

  • Frank would never disrespect Jim Hall that way, I predict!

  • And I'll bet Jim hall appreciates Frank Gambale's music!

  • You can't even compare Gambale and Hall, two totally different approaches. But I bet they would both respect and appreciate by each other.

  • nice. good to show some restraint. joe pass was a great player but at times he played a bit too much. this is some nice tasteful playing

  • young man that is no way to talk to your elders.

  • this is great..

plus he looks like Jason from Home Movies; )

  • Awesome.

  • Still my favorite, Jim Hall was a true innovator. Jim Hall is one of the only jazz guitarists (not the only one) who has the ability and wisdom to breath with his phrasing. Not really out of lack of vocabulary but out of love for the music. His Feel, sound production, phrasing, voice leading and ability to truly be in the moment, playing what he hears for the most part is rarely touched. Thanks Jim for your honesty and commitment to the instrument, the language and to music.

  • Check ourt the chord melody you can see what he is

playing. so this is good for you medium to advanced players.

  • stop bickering and yer guitar

  • Of all the great jazz guitarists, past & present, I cannot think of one who is more inventive on this instrument than Jim Hall.

  • What can I say!!

We need to spread the love!!!

    Peace, always!!!

  • I personally enjoy Steve Swallow's acoustic playing just as much, if not a little bit more, than his electric playing. His tone was always absolutely solid, as he insisted upon playing un-amplified with high-action gut strings.

  • Jim Hall, What can anyone say? Such beautiful playing, makes me just stop and listen everytime I hear him. Great post, Thank you.

  • Jim Hall... there are no words.. the bill evans of guitar

  • no habia visto a jim hall joven!

  • I can write for you any sheet music

  • maravilla!!!

  • Steve Swallow = S O L I D!

  • Wow--he is so good sounding!! So fresh and unique!! Great music and approach to guitar! Thanks for sharing!

  • There is a disc with this group (Art Farmer's quartet with Jim Hall, Steve Swallow and Pete La Roca) called "To Sweden With Love". It's based on swedish traditional themes, and forget about the concept, it is a splendid album. Jim Hall is amazing...

  • Yes indeed, this is the great Pete La Roca Sims on drums. What a cymbal sound, maybe the most beautiful I've ever heard!

  • This is just good stuff, no more needs to be said.

  • tunes the b string while he plays without missing a beat. skanless.

  • Jim Hall subtle, understated and beautiful and I love Swallow on accoustic bass. The drummer is Pete LaRoca, not Walter Perkins

  • I saw this quartet (with Art) in DC at Charlie Byrd's Showboat Lounge. They were wonderful. Steve is such a great player (as is Jim) then and now. Thanks for posting.

  • I saw this guy at the MJF. Amazing. he played In a Sentimental Mood.

  • Great to see footage of Steve Swallow playing upright. I like his electric playing too, but this is great.

  • I like steve swallow

  • This version is so remarkable. Blows away the Undercurrent one, IMHO.

  • Jim Hall is God, should he bless himself?

  • Jim Hall is a master! I see him as the major influence on Pat Metheny's style.

  • We won´t hold that against him. After all he hardly could help who´s listening to him.

  • Well he can choose who plays with him... Jim Hall recorded a fantastic album with Pat Metheny and toured with him as well. Two incredible guitar players, whether you like or not.

  • To speak of them in the same sentence is to not understand jazz music and Hall´s role in it

  • My friend, if your knowledge of jazz music is as large your condescendence, you are indeed a genius on the matter, but I play jazz guitar for over 30 years and my knowledge is not open for discussion.

If you remove that chip on your shoulder, you will see that I am not arguing about Jim Halls role on jazz music. All I said is that Hall was a major influence on Methenys work and that they recorded a wonderful album together.

  • OK, maybe I should check it out. BTW, I enjoyed your playing of brazilian music. RGDS

  • That was nice of you. Thank you!

  • oh my eeeaarss....wow

  • one of the most tasteful players to ever pick up the instrument. i always liked his playing with like minded bill evans on piano. now there's a pairing made in heaven...

  • beautiful sound man!!! every note is important... that's real and deep music

  • That´s beautiful! What happened to Jim Hall?He used to play so nice...The drummer looks (and sounds)like Pete La Rocca, though.

  • You could be right about it being Pete La Roca, I'm just guessing about the lineup. I haven't looked too closely...I was too busy listening to Jim Hall in his prime.

  • Well, he is getting elderly. You can't keep it forever, lol. Still, to have EVER been able to play like this would be fine for me. :-)

  • Yes, he is Pete La Roca, as this ist the Art Farmer Quartet 1964. Art is maybe taking a break, enjoing Jim's music. :-) In "the complete live recordings" this piece is also played in trio, with maybe Art (?) whistling the theme while Jim Plays it right at the beginnig... :-) Nice one! Thanks for posting!

  • God Bless Jim Hall
