The Olympic committee sets rules far prior to the event, they don't just make them up as they go. This wasn't some conspiracy Omega planned that Phelps could touch whenever he wanted, sponsorship has nothing to do with it. The rule was, what the timing pads say goes. Phelps signed up for doping tests ON TOP of the tests he already had to do as a part of the american Olympic team, check your facts. If Cavic really wanted to make a point he deserved the win, he would have won Rome.

@akinkao the pool length is 50m. the timing boards are about 1cm thick. the force needed to stop the clock is exactly calculated so that when it stops is when the swimmer would have touched the wall if the timing board was not there. as phelps came in much harder, he activated the board first. therefore, if there was no board, another 1 cm of racing and phelps would have overtaken cavic. that's how it works :)
if you go look it up youll see that fina reviewed it milorad cavic touched it with the tip of his fingers and did not set of the timer phelps or AMERICANs did not cheat

@xlordxboris everyone swims with the same rules and same touchpads. they can't go off with the slightest touch, otherwise a wave would trigger them, so obviously they have to have some sort of pressure threshold. I don't know if cavic touched before phelps (as you say) but i know that phelps set the pad off first. and they've both been swimming with these pads for years. no "surprise american cheating" just for this race or something. also, a blurry replay with a green line proves nothing.

The Olympic committee sets rules far prior to the event, they don't just make them up as they go. This wasn't some conspiracy Omega planned that Phelps could touch whenever he wanted, sponsorship has nothing to do with it. The rule was, what the timing pads say goes. Phelps signed up for doping tests ON TOP of the tests he already had to do as a part of the american Olympic team, check your facts. If Cavic really wanted to make a point he deserved the win, he would have won Rome.

All swimmers who participated (including the serbian team) knew some power had to be used to trigger them. And I got some different information from other sources... By the way, I'm Dutch, not American. I know it's easy to just say, 'he's biased because he's american', so I'll try it the other way around: I assume you're Serbian?

@xlordxboris i did not claim Phelps was unbeateble at that day. If Cavic only would've timed his last stroke better... But where did they say it than? I can't find anything about them asking to cavic at that point. Only his coach agreeing on the fact that this was known from a long way before and that he knew on the forehand he had to cope with that 3kg (probably 300grams left with regard to the water pushing on the panel) pressure pefore it is activated.

like someone else said earlier. it all hast to do with the amount of pressure you put on the pad. cavic may have been touching the pad before michael phelps but michael phelps slammed into the pad before enough pressure was put on it by cavic.
there's no doubt if cavic hadn't cruised into the wall that he would've won. but it doesn't matter, now. phelps won. the end.

yes cavic may have touched the wall first but its all about the pressure on the pad and thats what phelps did. your taught from a young age to always swim into the wall and hit the pad as hard as you can on a full stroke and cavic didnt quite do that and phelps did. in my opinion cavic lost the gold medal because of a school boy error. phelps didnt win it he just did what he has been doing in training for years.

Some of you may be wondering why Cavic didn't complain about this. Well Americans threatened him, saying what they'll do to his family ect if he does want the tapes looked at properly. This is why he took no action towards this. @akinkao the pool length is 50m. the timing boards are about 1cm thick. the force needed to stop the clock is exactly calculated so that when it stops is when the swimmer would have touched the wall if the timing board was not there. as phelps came in much harder, he activated the board first. therefore, if there was no board, another 1 cm of racing and phelps would have overtaken cavic. that's how it works :)
