Brilliant. A rambling slice of life; well acted, produced, executed and casted. A gem in filmotography ( does this word exist?-- it does now.) Thanks for this.
Really? And now she pretends she cares? She rejected him, cheated on him, broke his heart and caused his death and now she's all like "oh my, I'm fainting and crying and I loved him so much" BITCH. You don't deserve David. :p
I really have NO sympathy for Lois. She has absolutely no notion of the consequences of her actions.
a book by bowen and a magnificent cast. i so wanted this film to be perfect. after a slow start the film picked up but never lived up to it's promise. saying that, i enjoyed it very much and, had i been ignorant of the book, it may have been near perfect. fiona shaw looked as if she was playing wallis simpson, duchess of windsor.....was this intentional? smith and gambon were superb. thank you so much for posting this.
Taking your comments as a recommendation of Elizabeth Bowen's book, The Last September.
I've been both presumptuous and ignorant of the book: aside from this film, Bowen is new to me. Have you read any of her other novels or short stories? Care to make any more recommendations?
@sesanner bowen is a writer impossible to recommend an individual novel. she has never written a bad book. choose any of her novels and she hooks you. let me know your first choice. if you have not read last september it is a good place to start. i got the impression marda was younger than the film portrayed. good luck you are about to enter the world of elizabeth bowen.
Thanks, tehriddlers, for the opportunity to ponder this time and these people. I'm not sure I will live long enough to understand all I would like to of Ireland.
A large share of my colonial American family tree is Irish dating back to an immigrant . . . most of us were immigrants back then . . . almost three hundred years ago. But I think it's the great humanity of all Ireland's people that rouses my interest.
A fine film, from the book to the closing credits.
