Most indie developers think their games will sell without needing great visual marketing material. Even if their games are amazing people judge them by the box art. Don't skimp on this part.
True... Likewise, however, if you boxed the next big COD or Halo game you could put it in a crackerjack box and it wouldn't kill their sales. Personally though, I think a high school student could make box art (ultimately selling the product) as well as a college graduate as long as it followed some simple rules (no comic sans, use bright colors, whatever). It would not change sales significantly. Just an opinion.

It actually is used in video games and movies. All video games have some sort of user interface. Interface design is just one of many uses of graphic design. I finally understand why people think they can design their own stuff...because they don't think it's worth paying for it. A logo is the Identity of a company or product. The dot with the typeface they used is exactly what they wanted to portray for their company. It works well as a watermark on the television screen, it's soft undercase yet bold and solid. There are many things that go into even the most simple of design that people such as yourself don't realize effect their perception. And that's why we get paid for what we do, because you don't even understand why it makes you feel or act the way it does.

It doesn't matter what branch of design you're in...DESIGN means clarity of communication and communication will always be paramount in all cultures. So, I think to say graphic design is of little importance means you don't know what graphic design is.

"Clarity of communication" refers to structure, as in the structure of a sentence or computer program. I finally understand why people think they can design their own stuff...because they don't think it's worth paying for it. Wow...I've always wondered why small business owners (and even some big businesses) design their own signs and logos etc. and they end up looking cheap and tacky...but it's because they don't see any value in it in the first place...which never really occured to me before. I was pretty naiive.

A logo is the Identity of a company or product. The dot with the typeface they used is exactly what they wanted to portray for their company. It works well as a watermark on the television screen, it's soft undercase yet bold and solid. There are many things that go into even the most simple of design that people such as yourself don't realize effect their perception. And that's why we get paid for what we do, because you don't even understand why it makes you feel or act the way it does.

Its a simplistic design that was inspired by the Bauhuas. Breaking down the design to its simplest form, so it is functional and universal.
There is subtle design aspects to it. The circle is repeated in the letterforms, which all echo the circular shape, and the remaining space is perfectly balanced between the letterforms and the black space above and below ABC.
Its simple, easy to read, and an instant icon.

It doesn't matter what branch of design you're in...DESIGN means clarity of communication and communication will always be paramount in all cultures. So, I think to say graphic design is of little importance means you don't know what graphic design is.

You are using the term "design" in such broad manner that your explanation just begs for reinterpretability. "Clarity of communication" refers to structure, as in the structure of a sentence or computer program. Perhaps it was I who used the term "design" in a blanket fashion to dismiss it as a whole, but I was merely referring to graphic design in its most front-end occurrences, which is the type of design stossel was reporting. I stand behind my claim, and hope I have clarified it for you.
