I have no idea why some idiots are trying to be controversial by saying Von Blucher won this fight. It was clearly a team effort, even slightly in the favour of Wellington- bear in mind Blucher provided 10,000 less men than Wellington had.
Wellington would never have offered battle at Waterloo without the promise of Prussian assistance. He was well aware that he would need at least one Prussian corps to support him.
The life of Napoleon Bonaparte, this programme focuses on the French leader's calamitous defeat at the hands of the Duke of Wellington in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
Waterloo was clearly Blucher's victory. All that Wellington did was to hold his ground - which he did well and intelligently - but Napoleon's troops were clearly gaining the upper hand and would have won the battle without the prussian intervention. So yeah, talking about "Duke Wellington's" victory isn't really correct...
@letosvet1 BS, it was a team effort. Wellington was kicking Napoleon's ass long before Blucher arrived. If Wellington had failed and the British were driven off the hill, Napoleon could have beaten the Prussians easily. It was a team effort, but Wellington gets the credit because he opened the can of whoop ass.
"The life of Napoleon Bonaparte, this programme focuses on the French leader's calamitous defeat at the hands of the Duke of Wellington in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815."
---> Calamitous defeat at the hands of the Duke of Wellington???
Bullshit.
And what about Blucher and the intervention of the Prussian army making the French heavily outnumbered and saving Wellington from the defeat?
22.000 Allied have been killed at Waterloo while the French were heavily outnumbered...
@Freez57fr the french were out numbering the british anyway and at the begining of the campaign the numbers were equal the british were holding off the french long before the prussians arrived napoleon tried taking the centre and this led to extremly heavy casualties with the british strong defensive position napoleon could never have won
@stevenhaful historians are still debating whether or not the prussians did or did not deliver the killing blow and saved the british. So dont speak of it as if it was certain.
@Hocoboz "1815: The Waterloo Campaign, the German Victory: From Waterloo to the Fall of Napoleon" An interesting and well researched reading based on new documents and sources found in archives. In my opinion Waterloo wasn't that important, as this short campaign was lost before it had even begun. Nonetheless, Napoleon was a very special commander and ruler that had many extraordinary abilities and interests.
A most misleading show. For those who prefer there history rich in facts but lacking in bias and chauvinism,i recommend the book "The Battle";it's a superb account of the Waterloo campaign-i could'nt put it down!
@Rico8458 well not exactly but what do you think a note is.... it came from these days when giving large amounts of money you wouldnt give someone loads of coins so you would write a note saying "pay the bearer on demand the sum of xxx pound" check your notes now....
@Mistermax30 no. dont make up bullshit history because u cant face britain won a war without america. the prussians wouldent have won without us and even if napoleon did win then that would have been his last battle
@Mistermax30 It really was a mixture of things, and you can't place the main reason on one scenario. If Blucher hadn't promised to return to battle, Wellington would not have even engaged Napoleon at Waterloo.
Napoleon said all this later on St. Helena, but this is how Napoleon wanted people to see him, as a leader for the people. In truth reality was very different. Napoleon was obsessed with control, war and crisis. All he ever did, was in the interest of his glory.
If Grouchy had remained on the field of battle with his 30.000 bayonets, it would have been a complete French victory.

Waterloo was undoubtedly an Anglo/Prussian victory. It is doubtful if one could have prevailed without the assistance of the other.
