I'm not trying to impress you. I'm educating you to the fact that you haven't the slightest clue as to Lennie's music beyond simply listening and GUESSING wtf is occurring!
Matter of fact, I don't know of any other pianist who actually plays that particular Tristano transcription. You have to be able to play 12 rto 17 note chords, the thumbs and pinkys sometimes sounding up to 3 notes each, splayed across the keys laterally a Tristano technique that has not often been taught and lost through time.
Was she lip syncing? Most of these early 70s or 60s shows used the original recordings and the singers just moved their mouths. It's her voice, but....
Today's singers have no soul. Vocalists all sound the same. There's no power behind their voices, no dynamics...no soul. Even the music today doesn't have soul. Just because it can be considered "soul" music doesn't mean it has any soul.
@Yami02blue That's not necessarily true. Christina Aguilera's Beautiful, Adele's songs, Michael Buble etc. I mean, I get it that mainstream is a bunch of crap, I'll agree with you there. I believe the 60's and 70's was the best era of music (in my opinion), but to say there is no soul today is not true. Each generation has their own talent, you just gotta look.
@millers3888 True. If you're a fan of music then you can appreciate the little sparks of talent of any era, including today's. But you have to look harder the closer we get to 2011. In the 60's and 70's it seemed like there were all kinds of people with soul. There was a higher standard singers had to meet. Today's singers....man...singing forcefully doesn't mean you have talent or soul. I can't think of any examples of soul right now other than Dusty Springfield - Look Of Love. Take a listen.
@dannysorrow Sorry son, but she doesn't have more. Besides, you picked ONE singer out of how many in the last 10 years? One does not negate my purposely broad-sweeping statement.
Today's singers are not about having soul. They're about looking attractive for the cameras. Their nasally asses couldn't sing their way out of a paper bags...collectively!! lol Now, kindly get back to me when you can come up with more than one or two of today's singers.
@zepplinjetta There's no denying that Adele has talent. I don't think her voice has quite the power of Cass's, but as you say, different decades so different styles. Hard to compare apples to apples. You do have the issue of Auto Tune in play with Adele. I have no idea if she uses it, but when used judiciously on a decent singer it can be hard to detect. It is getting hard to find modern pop singers that aren't using at least a bit of Auto Tune these days. Obviously, no Auto Tune with Cass.
@cartman1492 Adele can sing very well indeed...she has a warm and soulful voice. What sets Cass Elliot apart is that her voice is both warm and VERY FEMININE. Cass can do soul too and still sound feminine----> youtube search " i like what i like cass elliot " and you will see what i mean.
Another song to consider--> youtube search " does anybody love you cass elliot ".

@cartman1492 I think she let just at the right time, matter of fact, she should have departed right after the first fucking album. Her voice was shit, she even makes Stevie Nicks sound good by comparison, and I doubt there was ever an uglier perfromer onstage, with the possible exceptions of Janis Joplin and Bette Midler. Her voice is quadruple recorded on this track and she still sounds like shit... an amazing study in utter mediocrity.
@Virtuosic1 Ah, so you're "a studio muscial director/arranger/composer/keyboardist for a major record label". Well, the pieces are starting to drop into place. It's starting to make sense. No wonder the state of music in 2011 seems to vary from almost universally dreadful to just fucking awful. Maybe you're the guy responsible for the trite lyrics and simplistic arrangements all with AutoTune generously plastered all over the place to keep no talent singers moderately on key. Congratulations.
@cartman1492 My job is to give the A&R men exactly what they want to hear, to a fucking t, you jackass. I'm the best at what I do, which is why I've been there for over 27 years.
@Virtuosic1 Jesus, if you're the best I'd hate to see the worse. Based on the YouTube vid I just watch you're a fucking hack musically. That didn't even sound like Lennie Tristano. He could get into some wild improvisation but he always was able to maintain the integrity of the melody and rhythm, a talent you apparently lack. What you did was musical beating off.
I love the excuse btw, "my job is to give the A&R men exactly what they want to hear", i.e. "I was only following orders".
@cartman1492 Maybe you should listen to Tristano's Atlantic 1357, Scene and Variation. It's an exact rendering of Tristano's recorded version, with my expanding the harmonic counterpoint and slightly faster. Do you actually know anything about Tristano? I studied with the man for 10 years. I have everything he ever recorded transcribed and fully analyzed you fucking twit.
@Virtuosic1 I have that very album on vinyl. I'll admit that Tristano isn't my favorite, and he goes way off the reservation melody wise when he improvises at times, particularly in his later years, but he does manage to keep his improvisation somewhat grounded to the original underlying melody. It is your improvisation where things go off the rails. Your playing is too discordant, and the melody simply vanishes in places. It isn't counterpoint as must as it's simple disharmony.
@cartman1492 It's not disharmony at all, if you actually knew what I was playing and how I expanded his harmony to almost Bartokian/ Ivesian extremes. I actually followed Lennie's rhythm and individual stretch envelope quite closely, only thickening his aggregates (chords as most call them), which by Lennie's definition is the simultaneous sounding, the nodal points of individual stretches, each wit hit's own dynamic spin. This piece is a masterpiece of expansion & mirror inversion, motivically
@Virtuosic1 To continue the post, it sounds like you're trying to impress way too much. If you're think about the person listening to the music as much as you think about how to try to impress him, I think your result would be infinitely better. I've met your type many times - technically proficient but with an almost adolescent need to impress that results in music that simply isn't very enjoyable to listen to. Musical masturbation. It feels good for you but doesn't do much for anyone else.
@cartman1492 To continue, you picked the pope to pontificate to! I've been analyzing, playing, teaching, and transcribing the music of Lennie Tristano for over 40 years. You could pick a Tristano head or particular stretch, name the bar, and I can play it and explain it's content to you analytically, as Lennie thought of it. I studied with the man personally from age 10 to 20, so trying to explain to me about Lennie is like explaining to the Devil about heat.
@Virtuosic1 God damn you have a high opinion of yourself. If only you were half as good as you think you are. The ancient Greeks had a word for this that is still in use. It's called "hubris". I suggest you look it up and pay careful attention to what they Greek though the likely outcome of it was.
Hey, I've got an idea for you .... why don't you find some similarly inclined musicians who have the same musical approach as you and you could form a band..... I've got the perfect name ..... You could call it "The Circle Jerks". :-)) BTW, I'm laughing at you, not with you.
@cartman1492 Sadly, Lennie's improvisational concepts of playing in the moment, instant composition, have fallen by the pentatonic, pattern, practiced improvisation wayside. None have the patience any longer to build improvisational concept from the atomic level up. They want to sound like their heroes too quickly, which they can do for a few bars, but once the muscle memory repertoire is exhausted, play the same thing over and over and over and over... ad nauseum.
@Virtuosic1 So a musical genius such as yourself is reduced to helping turning out the utter pablum that is the current product of the musical industry at the behest of the A&R guys. Say it ain't so! I don't think I've heard a sadder thing in my life. Perhaps you are not the genius you imagine yourself to be, or you are and your great talent has been utterly wasted. In either case, how sad.
@cartman1492 You know what I suggest. Pack your whore mother in the car and take a trip to NYC. Let's have a sitdown in person to discuss our differences in person. I'll start by fucking your mother in her ass, then you can felch out my cum, and we'll see what happens next. If you want to play for blood, I'm your guy. We can settle this the same way Lennie and Charlie Mingus settled a dispute one day, except with your whore mother in the middle, whadda ya say, gutless?
@cartman1492 A mama cass fan!! I can just imagine what a gutless, fat, fucking turd swallowing wuss you are, Mr Softy. Tell me when you're ready to throw down and I'll give you coordinates right to me.
@Virtuosic1 You know Virtuosic1, the thing about you is you're a shallow petty man (really a man-child). Look at what you've focused on most; Cass's looks and making fun of how she died. What a bitter guy you must be. Cass was beautiful where it counted, on the inside. A real artist of any sort would understand that. What's on the outside fades with time. You're no great looking guy now, in a few years you'll look worse, but the sad thing is you're truly ugly on the inside, and that's forever.
@cartman1492 You're planning on staying beautiful forever? Forever young, or some horse-shit like that. Good luck becoming the undead. The only alternative to growing old is premature death, which I would personally be very happy to assist you with should you decide to cash in the few chips you probably have before the reaper shows up.
Oh no doubt that you're far more of a Tristano fan than I and I don't doubt that you know more of his work. As I stated, Tristano isn't one of my favorites. You know, there's a reason why Tristano is fairly obscure. His work simply was never that popular. But, it has been embraced by jazz aficionados who embrace anything that is obscure because it makes them feel like members of an exclusive club. You see, they love Tristano for the very fact he is unloved by most people. Self satisfied snobbery
@cartman1492 You quoted almost word for word from the horse's asses that wrote those words because they had no fucking idea what Lennie's school was all about. There's no snobbery. There's a love for that style of improvisation. Others who approach Lennie's level of playing in the moment are Keith Jarrett, Denny Zeitlin, and of coursethe incomparable Martial Solal, the greatest virtuoso whom ever played jazz piano, like Lennie on Tatum/Peterson steroids.
@Virtuosic1 I quoted word for word from nobody. I simply stated what is entirely obvious to almost anyone who has been around jazz for awhile and not sucked into the ridiculous (and wholly unmerited) snobbery that unfortunately affects too many fans of the genre. Something that I find delightfully funny btw. Seriously, I laugh out loud over it sometimes. Like now for instance. :-)
@cartman1492 An interesting tale, you fucking mule. Soon after Lennie died, I went over to Lennie's place to see Connie Crothers at the Jamaica Estates house. I had just transcribed the Scene and variations and was playing it for Connie. Carol, Lennie's daughter, descended the steps and listened. After I played it, Carol walked over from the stairs dumbfounded and said to us, "I was dreaming that my father was playing.. I've never heard anyone else play that", you fucking layman.
@Virtuosic1 Actually I only appreciate Cass's voice. I really don't listen to her on a regular basis. But, no matter how fast you can tickle those ivories, rest assured that she had vastly more talent and infinitely more soul than you ever will.
@cartman1492 So you're a Tristano expert, right? OK. Which Tristano, Marsh, or Konitz tunes do you play? Let's discuss them and Lennie's concepts of harmonic counterpoint. What metronome exercise did Lennie start all of his beginning students on? What improvisational exercise did Lennie advocate for beginning students? Are you familiar with Lennie's Chromatic Boogie? That's a fairly obscure stretch that you won't be able to get much on by searching the internet. Please explain the concept.
Since you are a Tristano expert, who are the three neo-classical composers who most influenced Lennie's music,in fact, so much so that the way Lennie voices his chords and his harmonic counterpoint are firmly rooted in these three. Again, another question you won't be able to answer by searching the net, butthen again, you shouldn't have to, becaue you're a Tristano expert, right, you fucking jackass?
wat a stunning looking woman & a voice of an angel. mama u will live on 4 ever. unlike sum of the so called girl singers 2 day.they not fit enuf lick mamas boots.
Looking back to my teenage, I recall this wonderful voice which was so natural and the lady sang some wonderful songs. Her personality was tremendous, what her personal appearance has to do with her singing is beyond me. A voice to remember a bubbly talent missed.
@lutetiaconcorde I love that she wouldn't let them tell her what to do. The producer probably wouldn't let her sing live (too expensive with live musicians?), but she did it anyway! (At least, that's my perspective on it.) I've seen her do this in other clips; i think she just truly loved singing and didn't want her performances to be "canned" music where she lip-synched to her own recording.
I love her. She's been added to the current cast in Saardu #5, I'm writing chapter 8 now - Paradise:) Vincent van Gogh is gonna cure her of the eating disorder. I love being me:)

To mrwickedwill110, I was about 15 when this song came out--decades before Lost. I cannot remember if Ms. Elliot was the original singer, though, but I like this version.
I am a huge Wizard of Oz fan, and was watching all these videos and links and they kept leading to all these old singers who were great and have died. I can't believe I never knew of this woman. She is amazing <3 :')

It feels good for you but doesn't do much for anyone else.
cartman1492 2 months ago
@cartman1492 To continue, you picked the pope to pontificate to! I've been analyzing, playing, teaching, and transcribing the music of Lennie Tristano for over 40 years. You could pick a Tristano head or particular stretch, name the bar, and I can play it and explain it's content to you analytically, as Lennie thought of it. I studied with the man personally from age 10 to 20, so trying to explain to me about Lennie is like explaining to the Devil about heat.
Virtuosic1 2 months ago
@Virtuosic1 God damn you have a high opinion of yourself. If only you were half as good as you think you are. The ancient Greeks had a word for this that is still in use. It's called "hubris". I suggest you look it up and pay careful attention to what they Greek though the likely outcome of it was.
cartman1492 2 months ago
Hey, I've got an idea for you .... why don't you find some similarly inclined musicians who have the same musical approach as you and you could form a band..... I've got the perfect name ..... You could call it "The Circle Jerks". :-)) BTW, I'm laughing at you, not with you.
cartman1492 2 months ago
@cartman1492 Sadly, Lennie's improvisational concepts of playing in the moment, instant composition, have fallen by the pentatonic, pattern, practiced improvisation wayside. None have the patience any longer to build improvisational concept from the atomic level up. They want to sound like their heroes too quickly, which they can do for a few bars, but once the muscle memory repertoire is exhausted, play the same thing over and over and over and over... ad nauseum.
Virtuosic1 2 months ago
@Virtuosic1 So a musical genius such as yourself is reduced to helping turning out the utter pablum that is the current product of the musical industry at the behest of the A&R guys. Say it ain't so! I don't think I've heard a sadder thing in my life. Perhaps you are not the genius you imagine yourself to be, or you are and your great talent has been utterly wasted. In either case, how sad.
cartman1492 2 months ago
@cartman1492 You know what I suggest. Pack your whore mother in the car and take a trip to NYC. Let's have a sitdown in person to discuss our differences in person. I'll start by fucking your mother in her ass, then you can felch out my cum, and we'll see what happens next. If you want to play for blood, I'm your guy. We can settle this the same way Lennie and Charlie Mingus settled a dispute one day, except with your whore mother in the middle, whadda ya say, gutless?
Virtuosic1 2 months ago
@Virtuosic1 Spoken like a truly refined man of the arts. Your mother must be so proud! Geeze you make me laugh!
cartman1492 2 months ago
@cartman1492 A mama cass fan!! I can just imagine what a gutless, fat, fucking turd swallowing wuss you are, Mr Softy. Tell me when you're ready to throw down and I'll give you coordinates right to me.
Virtuosic1 2 months ago
@Virtuosic1 And empty threat ..... How delightfully funny!
cartman1492 2 months ago
@Virtuosic1 You know Virtuosic1, the thing about you is you're a shallow petty man (really a man-child). Look at what you've focused on most; Cass's looks and making fun of how she died. What a bitter guy you must be. Cass was beautiful where it counted, on the inside. A real artist of any sort would understand that. What's on the outside fades with time. You're no great looking guy now, in a few years you'll look worse, but the sad thing is you're truly ugly on the inside, and that's forever.
cartman1492 2 months ago
@cartman1492 I'm not a fat, fucking, gluttonous fuck, like you and your hero here.
Virtuosic1 2 months ago
@cartman1492 You're planning on staying beautiful forever? Forever young, or some horse-shit like that. Good luck becoming the undead. The only alternative to growing old is premature death, which I would personally be very happy to assist you with should you decide to cash in the few chips you probably have before the reaper shows up.
Virtuosic1 2 months ago
Oh no doubt that you're far more of a Tristano fan than I and I don't doubt that you know more of his work. As I stated, Tristano isn't one of my favorites. You know, there's a reason why Tristano is fairly obscure. His work simply was never that popular. But, it has been embraced by jazz aficionados who embrace anything that is obscure because it makes them feel like members of an exclusive club. You see, they love Tristano for the very fact he is unloved by most people. Self satisfied snobbery
cartman1492 2 months ago
@cartman1492 You quoted almost word for word from the horse's asses that wrote those words because they had no fucking idea what Lennie's school was all about. There's no snobbery. There's a love for that style of improvisation. Others who approach Lennie's level of playing in the moment are Keith Jarrett, Denny Zeitlin, and of coursethe incomparable Martial Solal, the greatest virtuoso whom ever played jazz piano, like Lennie on Tatum/Peterson steroids.
Virtuosic1 2 months ago
@Virtuosic1 I quoted word for word from nobody. I simply stated what is entirely obvious to almost anyone who has been around jazz for awhile and not sucked into the ridiculous (and wholly unmerited) snobbery that unfortunately affects too many fans of the genre. Something that I find delightfully funny btw. Seriously, I laugh out loud over it sometimes. Like now for instance. :-)
cartman1492 2 months ago
@cartman1492 An interesting tale, you fucking mule. Soon after Lennie died, I went over to Lennie's place to see Connie Crothers at the Jamaica Estates house. I had just transcribed the Scene and variations and was playing it for Connie. Carol, Lennie's daughter, descended the steps and listened. After I played it, Carol walked over from the stairs dumbfounded and said to us, "I was dreaming that my father was playing.. I've never heard anyone else play that", you fucking layman.
Virtuosic1 2 months ago
@Virtuosic1 Connie was being kind to you, don't you understand. What's she going to say ..... "Jesus stop butchering my dad's music you fuckwad"?
cartman1492 2 months ago
@cartman1492 Connie Crothers isn't Lennie's daughter. Carol Tristano is, fucktard.
Virtuosic1 2 months ago
So you're a mama cass fan? Right?
Virtuosic1 2 months ago
@Virtuosic1 Actually I only appreciate Cass's voice. I really don't listen to her on a regular basis. But, no matter how fast you can tickle those ivories, rest assured that she had vastly more talent and infinitely more soul than you ever will.
cartman1492 2 months ago
@cartman1492 So you're a Tristano expert, right? OK. Which Tristano, Marsh, or Konitz tunes do you play? Let's discuss them and Lennie's concepts of harmonic counterpoint. What metronome exercise did Lennie start all of his beginning students on? What improvisational exercise did Lennie advocate for beginning students? Are you familiar with Lennie's Chromatic Boogie? That's a fairly obscure stretch that you won't be able to get much on by searching the internet. Please explain the concept.
Virtuosic1 2 months ago
Since you are a Tristano expert, who are the three neo-classical composers who most influenced Lennie's music,in fact, so much so that the way Lennie voices his chords and his harmonic counterpoint are firmly rooted in these three. Again, another question you won't be able to answer by searching the net, butthen again, you shouldn't have to, becaue you're a Tristano expert, right, you fucking jackass?

Looking back to my teenage, I recall this wonderful voice which was so natural and the lady sang some wonderful songs. Her personality was tremendous, what her personal appearance has to do with her singing is beyond me. A voice to remember a bubbly talent missed.

a great song, but a shame she's singing along to her own vocal track :(
lutetiaconcorde 5 months ago
@lutetiaconcorde I love that she wouldn't let them tell her what to do. The producer probably wouldn't let her sing live (too expensive with live musicians?), but she did it anyway! (At least, that's my perspective on it.) I've seen her do this in other clips; i think she just truly loved singing and didn't want her performances to be "canned" music where she lip-synched to her own recording.
