Ok cummins was not a long lasting motor until the isx which has egr issues and the cats have always outlasted a cummins the c-15 pre acert single turbo motor is the best over all motor the e model was more quiet but didn't pull as hard isx is hands down the best motor you can get in a new truck right now
I am a Caterpillar fan, but Caterpillar has shitty motors now a days. There C15 is junk, and all of the C Model Cats are garbage too. Caterpillar should've never stopped making the 3406E, That motor was bullet proof. It sounds better too lol. The C15 has rocker issues, and parts for a Cat are extremeley over priced. Give me a CUmmins ISX over the C15 anyday. Give me a 3406E over anything
I run 2 KW 900L's and 2 Pete 379's with Cat 3406E 475 with 3:55 rears and 13 trans on tall 24.5 rubber, I don't have that smoke and will put any 550 or 625 up against them. It is all in the ECM settings. My fleet average is 6.25 mpg. Idle time and all, that is simple math done at end of each week. My trucks max speed is set at 99mph. I have good drivers but the secret is to cut your max hp and rpm to maximize fuel economy. Set your 475max@1800rpm and see the diff in torque range and mpg.
locoman, you sound like one of those big strapping bed bug haulers. We had 1992 custom heavy haul motors rated by the Caterpillar dealer and factory approved at 550 hp. The OEM factory turbo was an early 90's Cat #OR6951 and still used today in many custom Cat single turbo motors including my 15.8 L with Pittsburgh Power at over 800 hp.
I look at it like this, Cats are power houses that eat up fuel. Cummins are the longer lifed engines. And Detroits are fuel savers. But I'm only a 13 year old kid. literally
Cummins are very long lifed motors but we have had several series 60s with over a million with no rebuild yet. But we have also had a series 60 blow a rod threw the block at 700K too.

Throw the twins away and get a 1992 Cat 550 turbo. 30% better mileage. We have done it, no comparison..
qt4au 3 years ago
the biggest CAT they had for a truck in 92 was 425hp B or C model. do the research before say the wrong thing...

DodgeRamit02 3 years ago
Probably right. Guessing it is at 550hp. The 600hp 15.8L was mostly in heavyhaul apps.

You're crazy. All Cats are is fuel eaters
jzlamm 5 years ago
yea but they're so much cooler! check out how COOL my video is (with CAT power)
ponyscott 5 years ago
BS. Our '99 C12 gets a solid 6-6.6mpg, even pulling a bullrack.
bigstretch100 5 years ago
Thats cause the c-12 is a "baby" caterpilar. The C-15 is the real cat.
adamfordzilla 5 years ago
jz said ALL Cats are hard on fuel. Ours gets .5+mpg better than our E7 Mack does. The E7 is less than 12L.

I still prefer a Cat, but, I run a truck with a 500hp ISX Cummins, and not many rigs pass me pulling grade. :D
bigstretch100 5 years ago 2
exactly my point, Cummins are awesome

Running a 525hp C15 now, and STILL get better mileage than the Cummins.
bigstretch100 4 years ago
I know a guy who owns a C15 Twin turbo. Running empty, hes getting 4.5 mpg. lol. a "real cat" alright. loool
