This song was written by Michael Nesmith (of the Monkeys).
But it was Buckwheat that brought it to me.....one of my favorite songs and I always go back to drivin through west texas with nothing around but jackrabbits and tumbleweeds at 5am.
years ago i was at miller outdoor theatre and riot broke out when bj was playing i just walked throught the hail of beer bottles innocent and didnt get harmed
As a native Texan who has spent so much time away from Texas, (mostly in Iraq and the Sinai Desert) I appreciate this song, and listen to it every night. Thank You Olofzon. Many thanks.
This is one of Michael Martin Murphey's songs. I think he may been done it when he was in "the Lewis and Clark Expedition" (circa 1967) performing under the name Travis Lewis.
Anyway, I first know it as performed by one of his friend's/associate's Michael Nesmith on "Nevada Fighter" (1971)
B W has a better voice but I think Michael does a more effective performance of it.
B.W. Stephenson was a gifted composer and performer. His career was thoroughly mismanaged. This tune is a good example of what we lost when he passed.
why is it that when i find nice country music, i find out that the singer is long dead :( i wish i lived back in the times when they were alive, i wasnt even born then.
Hi Andy... I met B.W. and was able to help bring him to Texas State back in the day for a great concert... he was gifted and died way too young... Andy, part of what has happened to this kind of music is... everything has become about the money and the marketing... when it was once at least somewhat more about the music...the art... the gift. Try Willis Allen Ramsey and Michael Martin Murphey ... and do share these great songs.... keep them alive...
Country music? Hmmmmmm, back in the day we called this progressive country but I suppose country is as good of a term. I think the progressive lifts it above the average country song or maybe I just thought the music I liked, at a younger age, couldn't be simply country! You've probably hear all of Jimmy Buffet's songs but if not do a search for the album, "Living and Dying in 3/4 Time". It's one of the few that I like every song on the Album. I guess it's country! ;~)
Things sometimes do happen for a reason. Went on a blind date today. During the get to know you period, he asked if I knew BW Stevenson. Yes.He asked if I knew Texas Morning.Of course. That was the test. Then we start to reference the lines. I have played it five times now. I haven't heard or sung this song in 15 years. Odd. Just a beautiful song.
thank you, thank you for posting this! this song means so much to me, and does bring back bittersweet memories of Texas and Oklahoma. This song is not available on iTunes or Amazon, and I despaired of ever finding it again. and that album cover! I haven't seen it in 20 years... great.
.....and the wind....blows me like a paper cup.....down the highway.....

Seems like all of the Austin "Cosmic Cowboys" recorded this at one time or another. I always liked this version and Michael Murphys the best.

Great song, terrific artist. Also, for Willie fans, this and Buckwheat's second album featured Mickey Raphael with some sweet harmonica.

"Cactus Jack drinks his coffee black." Not sure why, but B.W. Stevenson always says 1970s Texas to me. And that's not a bad thing.
