  • love it! no matter how many times i hear or play this song it always brings out that fire in me. And the tempo and stops are correct...remember the organ is the king of instruments and should be treated as such.

  • what a Freaky wicked Gifted Soul she is.... i'm a died in the wool Rock'n Roller, and not ashamed to admit it. i'm also a Huge Fan of Diane's since i was a young Teen, i remember my little brother was flipping through the TV channels and he paused on a station and, and laughing he said- hey look its "The Church Lady" ( a popular Dana Carvey comedy skit) and i had a chuckle too, then our "church lady" started to play this Massive Pipe Organ ..... and we were stunned ! We could not get enough !

  • People forget this started out as a violin piece. If you want some point of references, look up the Preludio from Partita No 3 for Solo Violin in E major. Diane's right on the ball for tempo. It's happy-sounding and makes the organ sound downright sexy. That's all that should matter.

  • organsm

  • I feel as though I am watching something super-human here.

  • The Fireworks of God. The Universe formed to the works of Bach.

  • Absolutely amazing! Ms. Bish is without a doubt the best organist living, if not one of the best musicians alive. Her interpretations of every song are beautiful!

  • A little too bright for my personal taste, but man, what an organist! And I can't get over how she pulls that last stop without even so much as looking! Anyone have an idea of what she opens up there at the very last chord? I don't have the original music

  • hi t :d

  • Der absolute Wahnsinn. Das ist Musik in reinster Form. Absolute Spitze.

Ein treuer Fan aus Berlin /Germany.

  • I want Diane to ride my pipe for a few hours.

  • Magnifico concerto de órgão por essa brilhante organista. Nunca me canso de ouvir os seus fabulosos e encatadores vídeos. Sergio by São Paulo - Brazil

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • This woman is too good on the organ!!

  • I wonder , how it can be , dance with this woman?

  • Absolutely the speed is proper. The Sinfonia would not be half as exciting played slower. Wonderful music. Marvelous performance.

  • This is not an "organ" piece, but rather a "transcription". Bach wrote this for an orchestra. Many orchestras play it this fast, but few organists can manage the speed or momentum that violinists can (playing a single line of music, by the way). The fact that Miss Bish is able to replicate such speed and accuracy, while never sacrificing the spirit of the piece (We Thank Thee God, We Thank Thee!) speaks volumes to her gifts. I would assume the naysayers are merely jealous of her.

  • @swc789rjp Might want to add that it's a transcription of a violin piece by Bach too.

  • Increible.

  • Paul Jacobs plays it better.

  • @jorgecarrillo2 I'm sorry but first of all it isn't a contest and second: when I listen to Paul Jacobs it came to my attention that he needs some extra time for changing manuals....this piece is asking foor speed and Miss Bish is performing this wonderful piece of music in the exact tempo! Nevertheless I also like to listen to Mr. Jacobs, because his performance is also very good.

  • Slowwww dowwwnnnn!!!!

  • @Galfonz why? This is exact the speed it should be in performed: 110. Miss Bish is delivering here a perfect performance!

  • @Galfonz Nooooooo: don't slow down! This is exactly the tempo it has to be played in! It is PERFECT!!!!

  • This simply is marvelous, excellent, superb! Thank you for this recoding: amazing !!!

  • Beautiful performance and costume!

  • Wow...the first Coral Ridge console!

  • I think this is one of Bach's most beautiful organ works and it is certainly very difficult to play. But I agree when people say it's been played too fast.

  • I think this is one of Bach's most beautiful organ works and it is certainly very difficult to play. But I agree when people say it's been played too fast.

  • @janssenfrank1976 I agree that this is one of the best organ pieces ever written. It would be nice if the tempo was just a little slower at the beginning so we could enjoy all the harmonies.

  • Thats one heck of an instrument, and performance :)

  • I luv the speed and flair..bravo

  • @Dojocho Too fast, much too fast

  • I close my eyes, and can hear Fox's influence on her - Virtually identical registration, and articulation - Mind you, in my book, that is a HUGE compliment - Great performance

  • She captures the joie de vivre of Bach's music quite well. And, I like the spirited tempo. This cantata was written for an inauguration, so it should sound bright and spirited. Kudos to Diane.

  • while I always enjoy Ms. Bish's playing, I feel like she started too fast and then changed her speed too much towards the last half, and wasn't excited over her decission on pedal stops around the 1:20-1:30 area, it just doesn't fit too well...then again it could just be the way it was recorded...as always things sound rediculously better when you here it in person!

  • Wow! Too fast, too slow, who gives a heck! This piece is supposed to be brilliant, and joyous. Look at the cantata and you will see.. Its about gladness, thankfulness, and joy. And Diane plays it beautifully!

  • you are one of the greatest of all time

  • Great playing but no like growling shouting stops !

Bach hardly needs to be shouted out !

Slightly too fast for such complex music also.

  • Wow. Beautiful and very excellent performance.

  • Thank you for your wonderful work!

  • Absolutely enthralling!

  • who wrote this arrangement? I have one by wolff that is nothing like this one. The one that Paul Jacobs plays is also like this one thanks john

  • @jrcd123 The closest trascription that I have seen to the way she performs it is the transcription by Alexandre Guilmant. I found his transcrtiption for free online and it is virtually exactly this, with maybe a note difference here and there in the left hand or pedal. Some have said its the Dupre transcription. It may be, but I have never seen it. If you would like to see the free Guilmant copy online send me a message and I will tell you how to get it from wikipedia. It's very simple.

  • Love it! Love Diane! I'm no music scholar, but I know good music when I hear it. I actually tend to like classical organ pieces such as this one, in a faster tempo. Many organists prefer a slower tempo, but honestly, I find it drags the song. I like an upbeat driving tempo. I also like compositions that use the organs resources to the max. I love 'Full Organ', tinny overpowering reeds, and booming pedal divisions. If you're going to play it at all, rattle the windows a little.

  • @usspike I have to agree with you and I am a musical scholar. She is fantastic! As for most organists dragging pieces?!?! Yes most aren't really organists! It's like all the left foot Sallys and Aunt Beas of society, and those are probably the nayers on here!

  • Registration is not the best for Bach - and the organ prospect is a case for Vegas ...

  • Diane is a good organist, but she' always playing to fast!

    My edition(Marcel Dupré) says quarternote= 92

Version of Paul Jacobs en Rob Stefanussen is better!

Most of american organists playing to fast

Perhaps listen and learn from european master organists

  • Such a clear and powerful tone! That's what excites me about hearing most Ruffattis. They rock!!

  • Diane Bish is absolutely incredible! No better organist on the face of the earth.

  • Absolutely inspiring! Thank you for posting this.

  • It's such a delight just to watch her ellegance while playing, and how everyone can tell she enjoys and loves making music.

Besides, her interpretations are always superb

  • Impresionante y magnifica interprete de Órgano de Iglesia. Mi enhorabuena.

    Un saludo desde Barcelona (España).

    V. Lecha.

  • I saw this on TV. This is gnarly. Awesome.

  • @EffulgentKnight

I know, diane rocked this sh*t...she's great

  • OH !!

    MY !!

    GODDESS !!!!

  • I really like this lady and her organ playing but I find her tempo here a little too quick.

  • This is how that organ should still sound.....They added all that walker crap and voiced way down from what it used to be. The original voicing sounds so much more alive and exciting!

  • How do you know it was D?

  • @DominusNile Because it's a freakin D!

  • GOOD BLESS YOU MISS DIANE YOU MAKE ME CRY ALL THE BEST FROM ROMANIA !!!!

  • Well this is great performing, thanks for sharing.............

  • WOW! My heart is so happy! but how could it not be when it's 1) Bach and 2) Diane interpreting Bach! His music for the organ is unlike any other composer's.

  • It is a real joy to see someone using their unique talents to glorify the name of God in such a brilliant way. She is a very good musician who brings much vigour, grace, composure and unbriddled energy and vitality to her organ work. Bravo 5 stars for sure!!!

  • The joy on her face while playing this matches the joy of the piece itself. I might just make it a point to fly down and hear her play live.

  • I don't know why, but I absolutely love that bit from 1:19 on the pedals. Does anyone know what registration she was using?

  • I have toured Youtube listening to various people play this piece. After listening to many people on different instruments, I believe this is the best piece. She is so precise. Others are too showy or have a weaker venue that does not capture this huge piece of music. Paul Jacobs at Crystal is second. He is amazing. Notice Coral Ridge and Crystal both use Ruffatti instruments. I think that makes a difference. I would love to hear it live and loud!

  • è stupendo lo strumento

  • The awesome power that you feel when you play an organ so big. It's epic. I was murdering this piece earlier today at school. It's just fantastic (well the piece is, just not my playing!)

  • Diane, you are truly an amazing organist and musician . . . I love your videos!!

  • festival for ears and eyes! wonderful interpretation of Bach's Partita.

  • Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the famoust composer in the world. The sinfonia from the cantata 29, transcribed to the organ, interpreted by Diane Bish, is one of his miraculous pieces. Please apologize my bad english!

  • there's nothing like the famous Bish pedal stomp!! lol

  • @StrangeWizzard Quite so, I've played at Coral Ridge and never remember seeing any cock-roaches crawling around. Therefore there is no reason for the "Bish stomp", however I'm guilty of this practice myself...

  • I like seeing that she is playing two keyboards at the same time as each hand is on a keyboard. Most so called organists will only play on one single keyboard with both hands and also never playing the pedal. Those are piano players wanting to be organist with no formal training of the organ.

  • Diane Bish is one great organist! The organ gorgeous to see and hear and it has a nice clarity and "bite". Watching Diane play is always a pleasure. She seems to have so much fun! Thanks for the video, I like this performance every much.

  • For point: Bach did not write this..only the theme is his.. rest was from various transcriptions mainly Dupre

  • My late boyfriend Julian Rhodes used to play this to me at the local church, knocked my socks off. He recorded it on CD as well, while I sat next to him, watching his fingers hit those keys as fast as Diane's. I treasure the memory forever. xxxxxx

  • This kind of interpretation of Bach and others got me stuck on pipes. Diane is awesome and a pleasant reminder of Virgil Fox.

  • WOW! IT IS THE RUFFATTI ORGAN awesome awesome sound thanks for posting!!!

  • SLOW IT WAY DOWN!!! SHOW OFF!!!

  • As always, Diane Bish doing what she does best!

  • The Spirit blows where it will, and thou hearest its voice, but knowest not whence it comes and where it goes.

  • We finally get to hear this as Bach intended...I am spell bound. WONDERFUL!

  • @APatronOfTheArts As Bach intended? This was not originally for organ you know.

  • @dw154515

And if it were I sincerely doubt Bach would perform it like this. This is Marcel Dupre's transcription (I think) - the only thing farther from Baroque would be theater reportoire

  • I listen to this about every other day. Very uplifting.

  • I can't get enough of this song! Everytime i play it its a show stopper. And thats not something common for church. lol. But then again here in South Carolina there not many organist that can play music like this. It's sad really that music like this is not tought by more teachers here.

  • truly wonderful and inspiring

  • Ahhh...What would we do without the famous "Bish Stomp"?

    haha

  • Wow that 32 foot D at the very end !!

  • This is her signature Piece.

  • beautiful!!!:)

  • Quel truc de fou; il faut être savant pour maîtriser un instrument pareil...

  • Majestic!

  • vergib ihnen herr, denn sie wissen nicht, was sie tun

  • she´s my the best one

  • the ruffati at crpc is a very bright organ with easy play...a huge organ, it is designed for bravado...other ruffati organs i've heard, don't sound like this one...much like a steinway vs. the baldwin...liberace couldn't play a steinway!,,,not to take anything away from diane, she is a truly gifted organist, one of the best in the world, and makes everything she plays exicting & vibrant...i love her...just a commentary on this organ performace!

  • Well when pipe organs are voiced promptly, the instrument it is a joy to play. You don't have to struggle through a piece because of slow sluggish pipework.

If the airstream is focused on the lip of the pipe you will get prompt speech -- Alan Van Zoeren

  • amazing, is all i can say, She's my favourite organist

  • does anyone else find its strange that she is playing in c, when ever other transcription is in D Major?

  • @YoungOrganist maybe she is using the transposer =)

  • watching her right hand closely makes me think she's playing it in D major (noticed a lot of F#'s)

  • She is the very best and world renowned organist! I enjoy her playing so much!

  • Simply dreadful, it sounds so muddy and obscured. Puling out so many volitile stops on that organ certainly won't help the clarity in any way.

To erase what I've just heard I must go and listen to Noel Rawsthrone's gorgeous recording of this.

  • Not to mention she just rushes through the whole thing.

  • Is it the recording which makes this sound harsh and "metalic"?

If stereo, it does not have good separation. Maybe that also adds to unclarity.

    I like her energetic tempo.

  • It's her registration, it's just brutal.

I like an energetic tempo as well, but this is going too far.

  • Mind-blowingly good!

  • Nice

  • Shear Joy!

  • Thank you Miss Bish!

  • @Darrell1019 DITTO!

  • this is atruly wonderful redition of this piece of glorious music!!

  • I don't think. That I have ever. Heard anything more beautiful. In my entire pathetic life.

  • I started watching Diane on the Joy of Music when I was like 8 years old. I've always aspired to be "a great" like. Recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (29 years old), so don't think I'll make it, but glad to be able to watch amazingness like this, and glad to have had those dreams for so many years! Thanks Diane, you are an inspiration to many!

  • Try changing your diet, Zam.

I had a friend with ra and elimination of certain foods and addition of others really helped.

  • Another fantastic performance. My favourite musician + my favourite composer.

  • What a pleasure to be in command of such an instrument. What a treat it would be to have such talent and knowledge. One doesn't "play" the pipe organ- one studies the pipe organ.

  • one anazing woman....have to ask...was that last note horribly out of tune(like my organ hahahha) exept my organ is leaking so much it is almost dead

  • i was at diane's concert just this past sunday and had a chance to talk with her so i figured i would share something with all you other youtubers out here. all of these comments on her videos she actually is aware of. she asked me what my name was an my youtube name is just my name and when i told her she gave me this look and asked if i posted messages on the internet (meaning on her videos) because she recognized my name. So just so you all know all of you who have written wonderful things

  • about her on these videos she does in fact know so don't think that your words are going to waste she is aware of all of her fans and appreciates all of you she gave me the most genuine thank you for my comments. Just thought you would all be interested in knowing that. Thanks again to Diane for sharing your spectacular gifts with us. You are a true legend.

  • not bad for a bish

  • Orgue -asmique

  • wow!

  • Some professional could answer. Is this piece example using of golden rectangle in classical music?

  • Comment removed

  • A Thanksgiving favorite.

  • love how much emotion she expresses when she plays!!!

  • All that emotion to make this wonderful Baroque piece sound like a fairground organ.

    Just try listening without looking!

Then again, is the registration even balanced? I don't hear all the 1/16 right hand notes (swamped by the chords and pedal).

  • I have heard this piece 'LIVE' when it was recorded ..and I can GUARANTEE you it did not sound like this wretched recording ..even if the en chamades are rather bright on this Ruffati. She is a masterful player, don't blame her for the inept recording technician and mic placement on her. Please..

  • Ms. Bish, you are simply AMAZING! This piece is perfection. I love your show, but miss it often due to the time it airs.

  • On behalf of the American Guild of Organists, thank you so much for this post!

I can remember attending this performance in LIVE concert, on Official AGO Business, and this performance was just phenominal.

Ms. Bish reigns as President of the Organ. My late Father, whom was a National President and National Counsillor, presented her with an award many years ago.

Keep up the good work Diane!

  • Is she still alive? How old is she now? And when did this video air?

  • Yeah she is still alive and going stong, I'm going to a concert of hers in September. If I'm not mistaking she is 67? or somewhere close to that. I'd guess this was probably from the early 90s thats usually from when a lot of her aired performances are from.

  • This episode from the late 80s. The Rodgers console was installed in 1989, so my guess is 1988 or 1987. This clip has been used on MANY episodes, but that's my guess as to the original airing. Bishfan has some other clips from this episode on his channel.

  • She is playing on the Ruffati Italian made organ and console.

  • thank you. She just looks older in these than 67 i guess haha.

  • lol yeah ive noticed that too she does look a lot older than she really is hah oh well

  • Oh... yes she is still alive! She is 68 years old now AND she is still playing the organ. AMAZING isn't it?

    Hope this helps.

  • i loved the way he performed "sinfonia" on the hazel-wright organ over at the crystal cathedral. he's why i'm so interested in the organ. but i can't help but wonder what it would sound like if diane had played it on that organ. the crystal cathedral organ is truly amazing

  • Yes! I agree! The Hazel-Wright organ is something impressive, and to hear it live is such a treat! When I was in CA I attended the Crystal Cathedral every week and was always stunned at how wonderful the music/organ/choir was every Sunday. I will say I love to hear Diane play and would love to hear her play the Hazel-Wright organ.

  • she did play it better in the sense she didn't make the slight tempo changes paul jacobs made. if she played it on the hazel-wright organ at the crystal cathedral, it might have sounded better. but i agree it's being too fast

  • Don't you think that the slight tempo changes that Paul Jacobs make actually add to the performance? The organ here is not good at all, but that opinion has already been colourfully expressed.

  • I agree. I have heard Paul Jacobs in concert before and I think that he does everything with a purpose. I mean he wouldn't be teaching at Juilliard if he didn't know what he was talking about! He is the greatest Organist of our time. His playing shows us that! It's not just for "show"!

  • Abstractviewofu...you are one ugly Dude...Does your momma know your on the computer boy?!

  • abstractviewofu- Almost everything on youtube sounds ugly ear breaking. I don't think you can judge how this organ sounds with a poor quality, lo-fi, monaural, youtube video.

  • Not a patch on the performance by Paul Jacobs in Crystal Cathedral in my humble opinion ...it is just too fast.

  • I agree! She is always trying to impress by playing things WAY TOO FAST!!

Not to mention this organ is not the greatest.

  • Awesome, incredibly impressive, but I always find that Bish plays things much too fast. Is it her intent to simply impress, or does she think she's staying true to the musical intent?

  • superb !

  • Wow! I like this version done on the pipe organ much better than Wendy Carlos (Walter Carlos) on the original "Switched on Bach"! So much more power than the Moog Synthesizer!

  • Also great joy!

  • Played with such flair, dignity, confidence and grace.

  • This is one of my favorite pieces composed for organ, and Diane Bish plays it very well. The Ruffati organ at Coral Ridge is also very good for this type of music.

  • this piece must be played by c major

  • Mrs. Smith said we can transpose it into an arrangement with no black keys if we wish (smile).

  • She's playing it in D

  • yes.i mistook.its D.

violin version is little bit high

  • Does anyone know where I can find this transcription, I found one but it is not the same.

  • Miss Bish uses the Dupre arrangement.

  • Diane's performance of the Sinfonia #9 never gets old. Ms. Bish is an incredible organist.

  • Excellent tempo and phrasing, not to mention variety of colour!! Full of the joy which Bach envisioned (consider the circumstances which gave birth to this piece!). To play the 1st violin part on manuals is quite a performance of finger gymnastics... lol

  • Beautiful!!!

  • The organist is so surrounded by the music, and physical wave energy as well as sound, I can imagine that someone like Diane Bish would reach an "altered state" while playing .. truly one owith the music.

  • Diane Bish is extremely positive and energy radiant in this clip. She is wonderful. Her legs moving like in dance in this piece. Organs sounds tremendously. I have heard orchestral version of sinfonia to cantata 29, and I was not so impressed as in this clip. Some music need to be discovered from new in new look or sound.

  • You know, say what you will about Diane, she can play. Period.

  • Can anyone help to find a copy of the Dupre and / or Guilmant arrangement.?

  • Google

    Icking Music Archive

    There's Guilmant arrangement

  • wersja w tej aranżacji jest najlepsza, coś wspaniałego, monumentalnie i z uczuciem piękna to brzmi

  • I just love this piece, it was performed for my wedding at Hamburg Metropolitan Cathedral by the Cathedral Organist Eberhard Lauer, wonderful.

  • I would like to have the stop list of this organ. Can someone have the finesse of sending it to me, please?

  • I love this instrument!!!!
