You don't need to know rhythm to be an awesome lead player. My friend can't play rhythm at all, but he can play crazy awesome improv solos. And I can play alright improv solos, but i mainly play rhythm.
You should have talked a bit about AC/DC, it's not death metal but their rhythm is really solid and most of the songs are very simple, open/power chord rhythms.
Well, Most of DragonForce Rhythm are mostly easy, but (Rhythm for Valley Of The Damned, Through The Fire And The Flames is mostly ok for the Rhythm Part)
This has no bearing on anything other than my curiosity, LOL, but what is your ethnic heritage? My guesses are Middle Eastern, Hispanic, or Indian (Asian Indian)?
@anormantheman Sure, try some Metallica. Specifically For Whom The Bell Tolls to learn your rhythm. Don't just play the song. Play it exactly on time and play it perfectly. It's an easy song, but it's difficult to play any song and make it sound clean. Once you get that one down, move on to Battery.
@XxLowXProfilexX You can use any guitar you want to play rhythm guitar. Rhythm guitar is not a physical guitar. It is something you play on any guitar. You can also play lead on any guitar you want.
@Fallst4d rhythm guitar establishes the chord progression of a song either through playing chords or implying them through riffs. lead guitar is more of a melodic embellishment (think about how many great guitar solos play parts of the sung melody at the beginning or end). keep in mind also that sometimes 2 guitars playing are just orchestrations, meaning the other guitarist is just playing a different variation of the rhythm guitar part and not distinctly lead.
oh and also playing like Dragonforce is a bit WAY TOO FAST... but that also depends which song it is (at least some of them aren't as insane as FotS or TTFAF)
Rhythm guitar is the guitar playing you hear during the majority of the song in most common metal music. Riffs, chords, and that sort of thing. Bass is similar to rhythm guitar because they usually play similar parts, but not always. Aside from that a bass guitar has much bigger and longer strings, so it sounds a lot lower.
I think it really depends on the situation. There are a lot of songs that use different ways, and they all sound good. For example, a lot of groove metal like Fear Factory or Meshuggah have the rhythm guitars, bass guitar, and kick drum all synchronized. So it all depends on what the song is supposed to sound like and what the songwriter is trying to accomplish.
Well I generally think you want to have a rhythm guitar in most of the time. There are a few times when you might want to take out the rhythm guitar, like during a crazy solo or something. For example, check out the song Walk by Pantera, RIP Dime.
My lesson videos are mostly talking rather than playing for one simple reason. The reason is that no one will ever become a better guitar player by just watching me play. Period. It might be a little more boring and not as entertaining, but it's not meant to be entertaining. It's meant to be informative.
nice video. do you have any tips on playing fast downstrokes master of puppets style, i cant seem to get it, im better at alt picking palm mutes but with downstrokes i just cant do it fast enough
Thanks dude. I would just say practice a lot and build up your strength. A lot of it is in your muscular endurance, so exercise helps. I am going to make a few more rhythm lessons so those might help you.
Dude. Do not get me started. As far as I'm concerned the first and last Denver touchdowns did not happen. I have never been so absolutely pissed off at a game in my life. But on the other hand, the refs are only human, and they make mistakes too. It sucks, but that's reality. The thing that pisses me off even more is the fact that our supposedly awesome defense and Pro Bowl cornerback hasn't shown up for the last two fucking weeks!
dude i was watchin it, and i was like vafa has gotta be goin crazy lol. I live in cleveland so i was also unhappy with the stealers loss but w/e browns are poopoo lol
Heh, yeah dude, I was hoarse from yelling so much. I missed the Cleveland game but that sucks dude. Especially since this is supposed to be the Brown's year.
your an awesome teacher..iv been in a band for a while, but i switched to another group as a Rhythm guitarist,i suck! lol! they say my tone is too bright!
Shit man, don't even get me started. I had a front row seat of the touchdown that sealed the game. Man that was freaking painful. And now Merriman is gone for the whole year. But I'm still optimistic for a SuperBowl year!
Heheh well I wish I won too dude. It's all good though. You can see his video on the contest link in my video description, or you can search YouTube. He uploaded it here. He is actually a very good player!
Ah thanks for the clarification dude. Yeah, that's what I meant when I said you can still count to four. I know a lot less about signatures and rhythm theory rather than chords, harmonies, etc. Thanks!
Yeah no problem. Great job mentioning old metallica. I've been playing for 11 years yet still play all of the basic songs like Eye of The Beholder just to get it absolutely 100% perfect rhythm. It's fun when you almost literally collide frequency with the song itself.
When I started to play guitar and got lessons, I learned good base on rhythm guitar and didn't try to play any solos since it wasn't necessary at the time. After two years of playing rhythm good we (me and my guitar teacher) started to look solos and I'm not a fast solo guitarist, but overall I'm good rhythm player. I'm happy to be a good rhythm guitar player and not as good solo guitarist as rhythm guitarist than a bad rhythm and a bad solo guitarist. Not that solos wouldn't be important.
thank you so much for this video! yno my lil brother got a junior guitar (lol), its a bit smaller than a normal guitar, and ive learned to play something (nothing great tho) and i was wondering how to play rhythm guitar. so this was all i needed :)
"it's not a glamorous thing to be a rhythm guitar player"
unless you play slayer, of course!
i like the analogy you mentioned about being a lead player, there is basically no easy path to get to the top, right?
what you want to do is transfer the accents (and therefore tempo) made by the snare into your playing, that's what i thought you were trying to get accross.
Yes, thanks! That's exactly what I was trying to get across. I've seen a lot of dudes who are good at replicating a GuitarPro tab or play "Guitar Hero" style, in which they can hit all the notes quickly, but there's a lot more to guitar than that!
not at all. you just need to understand a basic (drum) rhythm in order to be good. a RHYTHM guitarist with no RHYTHM is horrible. i would know, one was in my band.
Guitar. But it's good to know about drums because it will help you stay on beat and play better rhythm with better accents. Going back to a sports analogy, a defensive football player definitely needs to practice a variety of coverages like man, zone, blitzes, and so on. But it will still help the defensive player to learn about offensive techniques that receivers might use or blocking techniques because it would help him counter his opponents. More information is a good thing.
