John McCain is a douchebag. Tom Harkin fought in Vietnam, just like McCain did. Unlike McCain, Harkin didn't crash five planes and get captured by the Viet Cong on an unauthorized combat mission. Had McCain not been a POW for five years, he would have been court martialed. Yes, he was tortured beyond belief for a short period of time. But his status as a hero is inflated at best.

While running for his Senate seat in 1984, and again while running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1992, Harkin has faced criticism for claiming that he had flown combat missions over North Vietnam. In a 1979 round table discussion with other Congressional military veterans, Harkin clarified that he had been stationed in Japan and His service flying F-4s and F-8s was later, while he was stationed in Cuba .What a liar Harkin is!

I'm proud to say I've had the plasure of voting against Sen. Harkin twice and will get a third opportunity very soon. It's sad that most people in Iowa are not aware of how far to the left this man is. He's right up there with the likes of other phoney war heroes like John Kerry and utter slimeballs like "The Swimmer" Ted Kennedy.

Later Pol Pot died while being tried for war crimes and crimes against humaity. The khmer Rouge never would have embarked on the genocidal murder of its people if politicians like Harkin didn't let the anti-war movement drive them. That is the most intrepidly stupid statement I have ever heard. The US antiwar movement was over Vietnam,Cambodia is a different country. The Khmer Rouge was a combination Communist with a cult like leader PoL Pot, after he emptied the cities of Cambodia and began the killing field the NVA went in and mostly put an end to this genocide. Pol Pot was a mad man who evantually was in the process of war crimes trial before he died. You really need to read about his before you leave asinine comments.

Are you a history teacher or student? Historian? Some are partisans. Pres Nixon would never have allowed this genocide to occur in Cambodia. The anti-war movement with the very heavy support of the US media hamstrung Nixon so badly that the Viet Nam war was being lost on the home front more that in the actual front. Communists advanced and as you said they did so in Cambodia.I feel from you a disconnect of our leaving SE Asia and the rise of Pol Pot and if so,I think it is not correct

Friend, I am not partisan I am open minded. I think Nixon was a fine President. I belive Watergate was blown way out of proportion. However hamstrung Nixon was by the media, we still lost, and in war the enemy wins by all methods including propaganda. In a way you could say that the Vietnamese won the hearts 7 minds of the protestors. Again Pol Pot was Cambodia. We we fighting the VC and because of our involement cost 50,000 American lives and countless Vietnamese. The VC were no threat to US.
