  • Great song! Love the horns. Long live his memory..... God bless your soul, Terry. Thank you for an amazing song.

  • It's Elvis!

  • Like the cars of the 60's so was our music. With style and performance. I remember listening to this song on KOMA radio on a small battery operated hand held radio that we thought was really neat. A radio that would pick up radio stations like KOMA and the wolfman in California that we could take outside, oh how wonderful was our youth. What I wouldnt give to go back to those days. If only to escape the noise of todays music and the clatter of societies ills. IF ONLY. LONG LIVE THE 60's

  • Terry Stafford also wrote the great country classic Amarillo By Morning. RIP.

  • Seems I remember that this song was on top of the charts when the Beatles landed and knocked it off! Good song, takes me back, way back.

  • I was in school at Appalachain State when this song was a hit. Great memories.

  • Great Song I love the oldies.

  • you are a good person . i am older than your Mum. sounds like she was a good person 2 know .i wish she were still with you.

  • Apparently, everybody thought that this was Elvis, and then Elvis recorded it after it became a hit for Stafford.

  • All of these Great Oldies remind me of my childhood ...watching my Dad prance around in the mornings singing to me and my brothers and sisters, *Dad I LOVE U and Miss Us so Much - God Bless and Keep U always close to "His" Heart.

    Debra Jean

  • Terry Stafford was to be the new ELVIS --never happened!!! Great song anyway!!

  • Terry Stafford OWNS this song. best version

  • @s6u6r6f6 absolutely

  • This song was not in the American Graffitti movie

  • My mom and i love this song she was born in 1964 and she passed away in march 14-2011. when i listen to this song i think of her aways i love her and miss her so munch. I want this song in my music collection!!!

  • @ac39469 keep looking up thats where she is waiting...!

  • When I was a teenager I thought this version WAS Elvis. Then I found out it was Terry Stafford. And later on my mother told me Elvis actually did sing a song called Suspicion (after a lot of arguing - I thought she meant Suspicious Minds.) Both versions of the song are good so I don't know how people can say one's better than the other. They both beat the hell out the crap they put out today.

  • @nev594

Agree w/ crap, Takes talent, to produce good old tunes of that era.

  • Great tune, but it wasn't in American Graffiti.

  • Ridicilous to say that this version is better than Elvis´! Elvis´ was never released in the US and/or UK as a single. It´s NOT original song! It was written by Pomus and Shuman and first recorded by Elvis on his Pot Luck album." The song became a hit in 1964, through an Elvis sound-alike cover version by Terry Stafford." Wikipedia.

  • I wish I could of be born in this era T_T;

  • Kids we were and it was a great America

  • @luckyshoeshine Totally.

  • I remember my parents playing this so many times. Memories are a wonderful thing especially when they are wonderful.

  • To laylacalif - I agree that Terry's and Elvis's versions differ but I think what one lacks - the other artist is stronger at. I like parts of both versions.

  • Omg, haven't heard this song since I was 4 yrs. old back in 89. My dad would always play his records.

  • Just listened to Elvis' version: it's absolutely godawful. His accusatory "Suspicion!" sounds square and flat. Plus he almost lisps. Terry's rendition is vibrant and easy. Terry - 1, Elvis - 0.

  • elvis recorded this first back in 62..this was cut in 64

  • Great bass line.

  • It´s ok but far from as good as Elvis, and btw, Elvis version came 2 years earlier in the album "POT LUCK" from 1962

  • Terry has better vibrato and pitch control in his rendition, but Elvis had more sustaining in his notes, a better resonance in his head chambers. Note how Terry's ending phrases kind of die out instead of having a definite, clean finish. They each looked very handsome.

  • The machinery got hold of Elvis and he churned all kinds of songs out....Listen to the left hand on the piano in his early recordings....that's rock'n roll at its best...simple and fabulous..then listen to 'king creole'.(Why didn't someone shoot those mad brass players)..Elvis was an innovator and we owe him a great deal but Terry Stafford made a far better version of this particular song...the worst thing to happen to Elvis was the dutch illegal immigrant 'COLONEL' Tom Parker (Who never served)

  • Wasn't American Graffiti set in '62?

  • I AGREE..... AMEN !!! @alshouse

  • I AGREE..... AMEN !!!

  • I love the picture at 2:21. Such a sweet couple. Even though I wasn't alive in the 50s, this picture pretty much sums up life in the 50s. Drive in malt shops, juke boxes, and Chevy cars. What a charming era in America.

  • I will concede that Elvis has the voice of an angel but I like this original version better. There's just something about it that can't be beaten.

  • @keefers1972 I think Elvis recorded it first.

The song "Suspicion", which was released on the Crusader record label and which had previously been recorded by Elvis Presley, made it to number 3 in the U.S. and number 31 in the UK Singles Chart.[1] "Suspicion," with a vocal by Stafford that reminded many listeners of Presley, had the unusual distinction of being at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 4, 1964 just below The Beatles when they made history by holding down the entire top five

  • @chicagoish -- Elvis may have recorded it two years earlier but i still like this version better. lol

  • @keefers1972 I agree!

  • I was 16 yrs old and sitting in a barber's chair in 1962 when I heard this guy. I thought he was Elvis. I loved this guy's version best...but I also love Elvis...

  • Superb version, Elvis did this one too but i fancy this one, Thx AK47bandit

  • This song came out the year I was born... Such a classic.. !!

  • Elvis Presley 3-19-62

    RCA Victor 0639

  • Terry Stafford didn't 'copy' Elvis....Terry Stafford..WROTE this song...! And HIS version was the big hit....

  • @Rowlandph another comment by an uneducated inbred . What`s the point of stating so called facts that a lies ? It`s a Pomus - Shuman song that was written by them for Elvis ( 1962 pot Luck album track ) .

Stafford`s cover came along in 1964 and peaked at #3. He never had another top 20 hit .

  • @Rowlandph This song was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. Keep your mouth shut if you don´t know things! Elvis ´versio n was only published on album Pot Luck.

  • Both men, Terry and Elvis, did a nice job with this tune of that time. Elvis did it a little more "soulful" & with a slower tempo while Terry picked up the tempo a bit. Both versions have stood the test of time & stand alone as a one of a kind which is very rare in the music of any time.

  • sorry but i am definatly in love with elvis so...hes the bomb..and u r right hes definatly as good as it gets on everything hes ever performed...to bad he died i woulda maried him...haha

  • The only thing that edges the elvis version is the haunting backround vocals where Elvis Vocal is much more dynamic is this song is just haunting .

  • 1JUSTPASSINGTHROUGH thanks for sending the comment but I researched it and as commented by ttesoroo below "Suspicion" was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman look it up While Elvis recorded it first and I like both versions I think I prefer Terry's version Thanks again for taking the time to send the e-mail

  • Suspicion was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, it was released on album Pot Luck 1962 by Elvis Presley. Stafford recorded it 1964. Elvis´ recording was only released in some European countries.

  • Now this bring back some very old memories...

  • This is not original song, and doesnt even go close to Elvis. Ripp off, that´s what it is.

  • @ttesoro - this is THE original song by the man who wrote it. His version also, I might add, shot past Elvis' recording of the same song on the charts. This man also wrote "Amarillo by Morning" which George Strait recorded in the early 80's.

  • @1JUSTPASSINGTHROUGH Suspicion was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, it was released on album Pot Luck 1962 by Elvis Presley. Stafford recorded it 1964. Elvis´ recording was only released in some European countries. Check the FACTS, mate!

  • Hey they just don't understnd they never walked in our shoes.

RAP JUST SUCKS. and so does HIP HOP.

  • @keefer2111 I agree with you my friend , but to each his own. I remember when they said Rock & Roll caused juvenile delinquency

  • High School days!!! damn, school sucked but the times and music were the greatest,

then nam fucked all that up!!

  • This is, in my opinion,is the best version of a great song.

I remember it being released in the UK in '64 or 65, thought the brass sound in the background was superb.

  • I still like this version better than Elvis, though nobody sings Hound Dog like he can! God help me I'm not old enough to be into these oldies, but I like 'em!

  • i have been reading for the longest time all the negitive comments that have been writen on here and to be honest, all of it is realy getting very stale, all i have been reading is people constantly being put down all the time. maybe people should try and get along instead of always putting other people down for expressing how they feel about things. i thought that we as free americans were allowed to as farr as i knew this was america not russia.

  • @angelo062367 I agree but unffortunately free speech allows these morons to spew their hate but that's the price we pay for a free society But it would be nice if people could exchange opionions without all the hate mongering

  • Was that my old '58 Edsel at :ll? Heard that some folks had problems with them, but mine ran great, h--l, it flew, even though the high-speed fuel bowl was cut off. Got 19 MPG road. Not bad for a 361 cu. in., 301 hp engine. The model was called the Pacer. Terry sure sounds like Elvis.First heard "Suspicion" in Japan at an AF snack bar.

  • Dave here. Looks like my '58 Edsel. Aquamarine green, or something like that. Some reports said they had problems with them, but mine ran like a charm. That thing would fly, even with the high-speed fuel bowl cut off. Got 19 MPG on the road. Not bad for a 361 c.i., 301 h.p. V/8. Miss the ol' Pacer. That was the model, not the AMC car.

  • I have to believe that if I didn,t know it was Terry singing I would have assumed it was Elvis.

  • Elvis did release this in '62..however it was poorly produced..How many people thought that Terry was Elvis?

  • there both good

  • love this song very much

  • from what i have heard terry was threat to elvis with his voice but history have taught us better

  • I used to think this was Elvis. Teehee.

  • Hate when people say Terry Stafford was first. His recording came 1964 and Elvis recording came 1962. At least avoid lies. Who was best? Better to be silent and let their careers talk.

  • @GosuSan you are CRAZY me my brother in law and husband the FORTUNES appeared with Terry on many occasions and any person who thinks that elvis did noet STEAL this song is musically constipated by the by Johnny Joey and I "SOUL SURFER" check out you tube for that one you are a musicakl nerd check the facts bozo talk about silent better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool or open your moth and remove all doubt

  • @GosuSan Elvis did this song in 1967, Terry Stafford wrote and sang this song in 1964!

  • @jeromejoh12 , I´m sry, but u r totally wrong. Suspicion with words and music by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman was first released on Elvis LP Pot Luck in 1962. If u don´t believe me, search the web and u will see I´m right. No offense, no shame to sing a song that the KING already had done.

  • @jeromejoh12 all you had to do was googled it first before stating incorrect afirmations. Elvis rendition is the ORIGINAL, in fact this music was written with Elvis in mind to sing it

  • @qqsomething Quite right my man, I liked both versions but Elvis recorded it first

  • muy buena cancion saludos desde youtube...la honorable sociedad

  • hit after hit after hit ..man i love these blast from the past

  • he rob this song from the king rumor has it terry was there when elvis record it onthe album .......elvis was fucking MAD.....thats what i heard.......terrys verve is ok

  • He wrote "Amarillo By morning"

  • The King is great but you can never beat the original artist, this song belongs to Terry Stafford. I lived through this great period of time also, I graduated high school in 1963. Thank you for this song

  • @FOXFIRECOMD1 Likewise -- 1963 grad of JPMcCaskey HS in Lancaster, PA. Loved this stuff.

  • @FOXFIRECOMD1 "The original artist" was Elvis. Terry Stafford covered this.

The song was written by Jerome "Doc Pomus" Felder and Mort Shuman.

And I still prefer Delroy Wilson's cover to any other.

  • @SamBlob tHANK YOU FOR THE INFO, I ONLY KNOW WHAT I HEARD ON THE RADIO BACK THEN , BUT THANKS AGAIN.

  • AAAOOUUU ... I think I'll always gonna love this chilly tune.... still love to sing the words out loud.... wjhat tune this was way back in '62... little would I know where the ocean waves will float me ... mmmmmm ...

  • Terry Stafford wrote this song--he is the original singer of it. Stafford also wrote the mega hit "Armarillo by Morning"...he was very talented. In all of the Elvis documentaries, it is Terry Stafford's voice doing the singing.

  • @AnneVNorskog1 No. The song was written by Jerome "Doc Pomus" Felder and Mort Shuman. Elvis recorded it in his album "Pot Luck".

  • This is better than Elvis' version by far :)

  • @alshouse ...but not as good as Delroy Wilson's.

  • @alshouse Elvis recorded this song before Terry , but didn't make it to the charts , Terry is the one who put this song on everybody's head , nufff said.......

  • @alshouse Great version and sung really, really well... But (my opinion) (you have yours) not in the same league as Elvis's version....

  • @wonittwice your right but elvis didnt get a hit the elvis clone did

  • @spacepatrolman You are exactly right spacepatrolman, Elvis didn't do shit on this song like Terry did. I'm not saying Elvis didn't do do, he did. But he never made a hit out of it. Elvis was very good, he was just never MY cup of tea, as with many others.

  • @surrynet thetre were a lot of elvis imitators especially when he went in the army jack scott rod jensen rod lauren ral donner pj proby

  • @spacepatrolman exactly, if it wasn't for the ones that sang Elvis's style while he was in the service, there wouldn't have been good songs to listen too. Rick Nelson was another one that was good. He helped keep rock alive during Elvis's tour of duty. Look at Carl Perkins, he wrote and sang "Blue Swede Shoes", Elvis copied Carl on that song. Heartbreak Hotel was written by Hoyt Axton's mom.

  • @surrynet carl perkins carrear as a performer didnt take off because he hurt his neck in auto accident [ elvis didnt write anything jack scott wrote his own songs] the everly brothers enlisted in the marine reserve because if they were drafted their career would have been over before they were out of the military as it turned out they stopped having hits and went to england same thing with roy orbison

  • @spacepatrolman I enjoy reading post from people like you, It's good to hear about people who cares about good singers from the past, thanks for the post.

  • @surrynet Your welcome there was a record living in the shadow of the past thats what im doing nice talking with you

  • @surrynet You and spacepatrolman know your music history!! I heard 'Suspicion" one Sunday around 1980 or so for the 1st time (even though I was born in 1962 but never had heard it). It was Terry Stafford's version - but I thought it was Elvis singing. Now I can hear the difference when I hear Elvis singing it of course. Terry's arrangement in the song is the best I've heard!

  • @MrOrionfan The old rock and rock is a passion of spacepatrolman and I. Glad you like it. Remember Johnny Horton?, well he married Hank Williams Sr,s wife after Hank died, Johnny was killed in an auto accident at a young age. Both Hank and Johnny is they would have lived would have racked up countless hits. Good to hear someone appreciates good music.

  • ... dont be a plum !

  • @alshouse It's the,"Oooh-ooo"'s.

  • @alshouse As much as I like The King's music, I was disappointed by his take on this song.

  • @fhb3isback With this song Terry Stafford sounded more like Elvis than Elvis.

  • @fhb3isback With this song Terry Stafford sounded more like Elvis than Elvis. I am the LORD.

  • the best ,better than elvis, and that's fot the backing vocalls

  • Fantastic Song I love it.

  • Spoken like a true redneck with zero knowledge! I'm not surprised!

  • @Odori73 what a wanker you are! jackie wilson said, " black artists have been copying elvis " james brown said "he was my soul brother" and as far as chuck goes, he counted his royalties all the way to the bank! ELVIS IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS, certainly beats this fag hip hop rap crap you call music!

  • @JAARNO88 You sound old and white. What other reason would you have to make it sound like Elvis came up with his own sound and is the "pride " of black folk. ha. Elvis was as popular you could get playing black music . Don t confuse 'popularity' with an informed opinion.

And then you think your opinion counts as far as hip hop goes which is a non sequitur unless you think along the lines of a racist... than it all makes sense. How much hip hop have you listened to?? fuck all right??

  • @JAARNO88 Name-caller.

  • @JAARNO88 elvis started imitating black singers like roy hamilton the record company wanted a black singer in a white body

  • @Odori73 .. you're not only ignorant and know nothing about music, you're an uneducated and unbathed racist. It's clear you hate Elvis because he's white and is everything you could never be. You're obviously a bush-hopper and a porch monkey attempting to appear smarter than a typical white third grader. Go back to your negro videos and stop following whites around! You're nothing more than alley trash! Btw, Elvis has more talent in his pinky-finger than the carcassas you mentioned.

  • The so called King was a biter! This is classic, more importantly the original, most of Elvis stuff was copied from other more talented artist! Research and you'll find this to be true RealDare2!

  • @Odori73 ... If you do a small amount of research you'll find this to be true. Elvis was and is and always will be the King of entertainment worldwide with no exceptions. You obviously know nothing about music or you would have known long ago that Elvis beats them all with no debate, and that includes terry stafford. You're unbelieveably ignorant! lol.

  • @Odori73 I researched. This was written by Jerome "Doc Pomus" Felder and Mort Shuman and was originally recorded by Elvis for his album "Pot Luck".

Most of Elvis's original recordings were written by professional songwriters for him to record. He didn't write his own songs, but he didn't cover everything he did.

I'm not a big Elvis fan, but there were enough of them to make him the King of Rock and Roll.

BTW, Pomus and Shuman also wrote "Save The Last Dance For Me" by The Drifters.

  • Most singers are dopers to some extent. Some just push it too far and OD...the list is too long to read.

  • Elvis was a doper and a asshole.

  • to plasteredleg1 - you go man! AfterTheBell can't drop the other shoe, much less....heh, heh, heh. This is Terry Stafford's song noboutadoutit.

  • I love this song! Lets just appriciate it and not worry about who's rendition is better. Thank God for music like this.

  • Why can't y'all just enjoy the music. If you don't like it - don't listen - choose something else - it's a no brainer!

  • What a GREAT song....He was born in the same city as myself...Amarillo,Texas

  • This song came out while I was in the Navy attending Radioman School in Norfolk Va. in the spring of 1964. They had a video juke box in the Navy Exchange cafeteria.

    What an invention.

  • I mean let's face it, this guy is no Elvis. This song is draggy to say the least. The music is unique in spots and that is what some people like about this version by Stafford. I'll give the guy some credit and say "he got lucky somewhat with the music(not the singing), he couldn't sing his way out of a barrell. But never make the mistake of saying this guy is a better entertainer than the King!

  • Terry did a 60's spin to Elvis...thats why its the favorite.

  • But let's look at it this way. When people who don't know this song or its singer hear it, who will they think of? Terry Stafford? no. They think of Elvis

  • @eaglestalon92 I actually think of Delroy Wilson...

  • I so agree with countrydude03.. Terry hands down done this song better than Elvis.. I love Elvis. I have every song he ever did. but when one does it better than the other it should be said...

  • One of the greatest sounds of the 1960's

  • @countrydude03....give it up Bud....Elvis was the King...but that doesn't mean he one every battle....Terry whooped his butt on this one. Doesn't matter when who sang what....Terry had the better voice and arrangement for this particular song. I won't say that about many of 'em...but this one I'll stand by.

  • @Sixgun51 nobody cant beat Elvis, that man had God's voice, Terry just impersonatin him with them back up singers. Elvis '62 original version, look it up kid. Terry just remade it but aint that good

  • I never heard this !great! Thanks

  • This was Elvis's song first

  • the backing is better enough said

  • I like this version better than Elvis.

  • Mr.Bandit do you have records of singer Tony Rico? He is perform "Wild One" between 1950-1955...

  • Elvis lost it on this one....Terry did the BEST version ever on it. Elvis was good...but not as good as Terry on this one. Almost like he tried to copy Terry.

  • @Sixgun51 funny, Terry tried to coppy Elvis. learn your facts. Elvis sung this in '62 and Terry sung in '64. nobody cant out perform Elvis not even the ladies in the background. i like Terry though but Elvis had God's voice

  • @countrydude03 Sure maybe Elvis sang it first...but Terry did this one best. I'm an Elvis fan too....but sometimes...somebody trumped him....and this one was one of those times. The background...the arrangement....he beat him. I don't think Elvis minded either. Think what you want and I will do the same...how's that?

  • @Sixgun51 you can listen to whatever ya wanna listen to. wasnt for Elvis i'd been dead. Elvis will always have this song beat, sung it first. i dont like it when people say Elvis copied who and all that and the ones that did it copied Elvis. like the song What Hurt's The Most, the orginal song is from Mark Wills not Rascal Flatts. and say who sang the best anda all that. im 25, i aint no teenager and all that. i know music. you might be 50 somethin but me is all bout Elvis

  • @Sixgun51 also copyin remark you said, Terry copied Elvis you dumbass

  • thank you soooooooooooo much

  • I really like this version, but Elvis' version is absolutely number one to my ears. He is named the King for a reason.

  • C'mon, Terry's version is better..no doubt.

  • Rest in peace Terry Stafford. Wish you had made a greater impact on the music of the 60's. You had a great voice and this song will long be a favorite of those who remember you.

  • lol this song is about my ex gf.... and holy shit, why would she be looking at other guys when she was with me?! lol she was looking at this guy that looked surprisingly like me, so at least she thought I was hot haha

  • nice version BUT I can't understand people putting it above Elvis's original...Elvis's is fantastic !

  • @ronetteloverz you dont know Elvis than, Elvvs sang it 2 years before Terry sanged it

  • @countrydude03 When Elvis sanged it has nothin to do wit anythin

  • Ok,he did a better Elvis than Elvis...but thats just the way it had to be. And rock was has a great song....

  • A great song - is a great song. Love both versions and i daresay there are others even today who could do a pretty cool version too.

  • One of the last songs on our land-based pirate station, XCFT, Northants, 1964 when in the USAF. GREAT song. also, nice to see a "DJ's DJ" the great howlin' Wolfman Jack. Delicious. Thank you AK47!

  • Elvis had a good version but Terry Owns This Song ! Thanks for Posting My Friend !

    Danny

  • He out Elvised Elvis. Give him that-lol.

  • critics never have talent they just

whine about those more talented then themselves

  • Nice effort ... I remember buying it ... but please have a listen to the Elvis original version ... I have a suspicion that it really is the best version.

  • @Jarrahnut i like the music.. oo oo from the girls. its not the singing that makes it better then elvis' version its the melody

  • elvis fans....sorry but this is the version we grew up with......thank you terry stafford !!

  • Song was done in 64' in a one room studio, one cut,... Les Paul's brother-in-law, B. (Bob) Summers did all the instruments himself seperately and did all the engineering and mastering himself for Stafford. Stafford just walked in, sat on a stool and sang it, one take. That's how they did it in those days. It went on the Crusader label, beat Elvis out, stayed on the top 10 the whole fucking year, and sold over one million copies,... not bad for a 'little draggy' song...

  • guess who wrote it...

  • Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman wrote it.

I grew up with the Stafford version, but I just caught Elvis's take on it and I like that as well.

  • An unusual and unique song by Stafford, I like it. Although it's a little draggy in spots. Overall I'd say it is a pretty good song.

  • Love it!! Love these 50's songs.

  • oohyllab: Glad you love 50's songs. What has that got to do with this song?

  • Nice rendition by Terry, but the King can't be topped!

  • @RealDare2 The "King" was the greatiest BUT not on this song!

  • @RealDare2 Your opinion, of course. But Stafford did it first and did it best.

  • @themoshmenace NO Elvis recorded it first in 1962 and Stafford in 1964, there both good
