Yeah! But not all were forced to convert. Let me put in this way. In the first 70 years, the Portugese were lenient towards the local populace. They were not fanatical and were even admired by the Hindus for driving out the Muslim. The large majority of the conversions occurred during this period through propagation, not through force. After that, the Portugese became fanatical and changed their attitudes completely. The conversions after that, such as in Candolim, were largely done by force.

In the first place what right did the portugues have in propogating Christianity in a land that first inhabited by the Hindus? Every part of India i.e. the princely states and provinces had the right to remain indpendent after the british left but instead joined the Union as it was economically favourable with better border security. Goa would be a shithole if it wasnt incoporated into the Union! As far as I know, I havent heard the Goans demanding to be independent yet!
