Actually, if you count deaths AND Wounded soldiers that were incapacitated for the rest of the war, German losses were around 10 million. If you add the same factor to Russia, its just over 26.7 million.

As a Russian-American whose family became American only after WWII, I don't see why I can't acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of *both* nations.
I know that the majority of readers will not trust my words, except for Russians. Because western people are convinced that Russians don't know the history, that we wer fed with propaganda. It is partly true in relation to newspapers and TV news these days. But it is not like it was in the USSR. Also we have plenty of information from many many other sources, from numerous books and researches (including western) to internet and official documents.

Read my previous comment, I was referring to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. It was a non aggression treaty which also outlined the division of Poland, which in hindsight was probably a good thing because it meant that half the country would be out of Nazi hands.

What Nazi propaganda tells us(Western propaganda too) is that the Nazis killed 10 russians for every 1 they lost, and they lost 3 million german soldiers. That means Soviet military losses is 30 million! Such nonsense does not even need to be taken as a joke, it is below a joke. Axis losses totalled around 7.2 million, roughly a 1.3 : 1 kill ratio.....HARDLY what you see on "Enemy at the Gates"

Yes I expect, and I think the Western nations expect. Russia said it was alarmed and provoked by the stationing of missiles on its border; now that has been suspended. As for these military displays, I find them provokative. The harken back to the Cold War. Military displays are trying convey a message to enemies. If there is peace between us they are not needed: "They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning forks, and nations shall sudy war no more."
These parades r not to provoke the West but to show they have power. Its not like these missiles r going to launch themselves in the middle of a parade. There is more to it then that. Read my previous comment, I was referring to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. It was a non aggression treaty which also outlined the division of Poland, which in hindsight was probably a good thing because it meant that half the country would be out of Nazi hands.

USSR civilian deaths that were recorded was 13.7 million, Military losses were 8 - 10 million. What Nazi propaganda tells us(Western propaganda too) is that the Nazis killed 10 russians for every 1 they lost, and they lost 3 million german soldiers. That means Soviet military losses is 30 million! Such nonsense does not even need to be taken as a joke, it is below a joke. Axis losses totalled around 7.2 million, roughly a 1.3 : 1 kill ratio.....HARDLY what you see on "Enemy at the Gates"

Now that Obama has stopped the building of missile systems in Poland and Czechoslovakia, I expect Russia to tone down these military displays. It is time to have something that is more in keeping with the joy of liberation and victory and with the heros of that great war. I also do not like hearing, once again, Russians talking this patriotic claptrap they used to talk to strangers in Soviet days, because they were afraid of the consequences of being frank and genuine. Russia must go forward!

Yes I expect, and I think the Western nations expect. Russia said it was alarmed and provoked by the stationing of missiles on its border; now that has been suspended. As for these military displays, I find them provokative. The harken back to the Cold War. Military displays are trying convey a message to enemies. If there is peace between us they are not needed: "They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning forks, and nations shall sudy war no more."

These parades r not to provoke the West but to show they have power. Its not like these missiles r going to launch themselves in the middle of a parade. There is more to it then that. Nato's expansion into Russia's backyard and the US military involvement into Georgia. This isnt war but Russia and its ppl want to look strong on the world stage. U have no right to expect anything. Russia should and will continue these displays each yr and ramp them up even more.

Well I agree with you about NATO's expansion. I think you have overstated the extent of US involvement in Georgia. We are not going to war with the Russian armed forces for the sake of Georgia. That is clear. Bush backed down and the Georgian President has, I think, been told to behave himself. (A stupid man!) I expect good things from Russia. I have always expected good things from Russia. But I agree with you that the US and NATO must behave themselves too.

Ok, we agree. The US was proven to aid Georgia via weapons, military aid, and transportation. The georgian prez is a stupid man and Obama clearly sees through to that. I do hope Obama and Medvedev can cooperate and foster better ties. When the Soviet Union fell, Russians were in dispair and heartbroken. Then came Putin who restored and brought renewed confidence to Russia. Russians like thinking big for their country. I'm against nuclear proliferation and wars too. Russia must behave rationally.

Sometimes, the "wrong" word is more popular/known than the correct designation. I think that´s why many people say "england" instead of "UK", rather that for a disrespectful attitude.
