I listened to this song just as I was peaking on a 32 coricidin overdose which I survived, but this song has always made me enjoy life more since then.
I think it's about striving to be something you are not, something that seems better and desirable. Then, when you get close to becoming what you thought you wanted to be, you realize that it's actually everything you always loathed and hated. You've become the person you despise the most. (I swore I'd never turn into you, I'm closer all the time)
Everytime I hear this song, I know deep inside it is about more than just getting high. However, I can't exactly put my finger on what it is truly about.
This song makes me think of two different things.... someone who has reached a mental climax, or someone about to get down and dirty with their lady. Interesting. But for me, its such the perfect jam to kick to when your leaving work!
@Aridcreaturehere Just listen to the lyrics. He talks about 'never turning into you' by getting so high. A hatred for the world and a desperation for escapism aka getting 10 miles high.
I heard this song used in a flash animation once. It was about a robot trying to escape a prison, but when he finally did his power cord ripped out and he died. It was a lot more chilling to watch than it sounds.
I don't get all of the people hating on the NIN remix albums! Thungs Falling Apart is awesome, and I really want to get it. I already have Further Down the Spiral, and it's great!
The only crappy NIN remix album out there is the Year Zero one.
From what I've heard of it, Fixed is a bit shitty too. I agree that this one was great, though. To the extent that I preferred some of these tracks to their ancestors on The Fragile.
I dunno... I think the only bad remix album was the Year Zero one. On TFA, they had some good tracks: 10 Miles High, The Wretched, and Slipping Away...
When I was younger (I was raised listening to NIN) I did think that Trent was the one who did the cover. Both versions are equally amazing in their own ways, though :)
@charbizzar Actually, if I remember correctly, Johnny Cash had said before that he had originally written hurt but didnt feel that he could make it sound the way that he had intended. Then NIN covered the song, of course making it their own. Cash later said that Trent gave the song what he originally wanted it to sound. Dont quote me on it tho...
@laffcafe what the fuck are you talking about dude.
You got it all wrong.
Hurt was written, recorded and performed by NIN (Trent Reznor) then Johnny Cash listened to it and sent Trent a demo of the song wich Trent didn't like it at all.
After that tret saw the video end he liked cash version. That's a fact you can corroborate, but what you just said is just non sense.
Trent definitely had enough material for another two or three discs after The Fragile was done. I think it's just the problem of not wanting an 'album' to be four or five hours long.
do you think that part at the end where he goes "tear it all down" is another referance to The Wall? I've heard Trent say that The Wall was huge for him when it came out.
I looked up a few sources, I didn't know Trent's favorite album was "The Wall". The original lyrics are "tear down the wall" (from the song "The Trial"), quite similar to what is sung here. I wouldn't be surprised if it's another homage to The Wall. It's a safe bet it is.
i tripped so hard to this song one night we just looked at the carpet for 6 hours straight listeing to this song over and over for all the 6 hours. spiraling out of control looking at the huge rug. lol good good times
This version of the song is from the vinyl version of The Fragile and the "We're in this Together" UK single. The other shorter version is from "Things Falling Apart."

@darthpaul123 I'm sorry, but Trent is not a modern day Beethoven. That is just ignorant. I enjoy NIN as much as anybody but there is simply no way to back such an extreme statement up. In the distant future, Reznor's influences (Pink Flyod, Skinny Puppy) will stack up much higher.
@jackkoffin1 alright, time to talk with you,Mr. jackoffin1 (and don't get any of your love on me whilst I'm talking to you.) Sure,Skinny Puppy,Floyd, great bands, but very short music making careers. Pink's been dead for new stuff since the 90s. Didn't do much in the 80s either. Mr. Puppy, tho great, made a very short career shorter by going and dying.
