I've said it before and I'll say it again... the guitar tech needs shooting for badly tuned guitars and the engineer is also obviously given shoddy mixes to the in-ears...
@Stilgar74 nuthin wrong with the guitar tech dude... the producer and sound specialist for this tour Chad had never done a hall with so much acoustic which made it really hard for him, i heard in an interview.... the audience had perfect sound but the rest is kinda out..
It's always interesting to see Mayer at the beginning of a tour. He's even said it himself, the whole band is still learning the songs at that point. He seems so much more vulnerable at the start, yet he's still miles better than any of us.
He's been a favorite artist of mine and this song is very thought-provoking. His questioning of belief (implicit in the lyrics) has the tone of a belief about beliefs (or concepts) and thus reaches the pinnacle of irony, but paradox can be a doorway to freedom.
I'm a little upset with how loud the guitars are tuned to this song and his voice isn't louder. It's a screw up on the sound guy or maybe JM wanted it that way, I'm not sure.
To reply to your drunk thing, actually, he was sick that night, it's been reported on a few sites and by JM himself, he was nursing a cold and not feeling good at all. Plus, he had pulled a 2 and a half hour show the night before. But, I'm with you, the keys are too loud on this
@funstufun hahaa. my bad. it was at 2:57 it was hilarious. The solo was badass. and I think youre really confused because im the biggest john mayer fan you will ever meet! lol
This is very sweet, but I like the Crossroads festival version even better... especially the intro to the song. Also like the slide playing better on that one.
that "guy" is Steve JOrdan, a true groove master. JJ was good for a really really solid backing of a bigger band, but now with a tinner sound, likewise he needs a thinner drum sound, so SJ steps in. Listen to JM3, Steve Jordan is unbelievable.
From 2:38 to 2:57 he's taking away from that slide lead. It dosn't sound bad, I just think it would have sounded better if he just stuck to the groove.
if you listen to the original track JJ was layin down the beat on the toms but since he played a huge Ludwig set, naturally the blend was better. Steve's Yamaha set is tuned higher and is, once again, thinner sounding which doesn't necessarily blend as well, but who's to say it needs to blend with a smaller sound band. Go look up John Mayer trio, really anything, i personally dig Chicken Grease Jam into Cissy strut as a true example of Steve's talent. JJ's good but sj is better.
Really? The original track being Continuum? I will have to listen more carefully. I have had the CD for a few years now but never listened close enough to hear it. Thanks for the heads up.
Lots of people putting these backing singers down, I think they hold John's vocals together which don't seem to be great this gig. I think they are a good idea, he may as well get as big a sound as possible since he hardly has any tracks that get the crowd properly going.
what is going on with him? I love his music more than anyone but the whole concert his vocals are off and it all seems a bit watered down, and the back up singers were a terrible idea, completely out of character for a mayer performance, weird...
the back up singers are out of tune throughout the whole concert....must not have practised the harmonies enough cause its not realy up to standard of like eric claptons singers who are amazing live...
That being said, I have to say that this whole concert in general sounds like Mayer is somewhat anxious. He lost that confidence he had around Continuum.
While a lot of you think his vocals are out, remember that this guy has not been touring in a while. When he nears the end of his touring scheduling he hits prime Mayer; creatively, vocally, musically. He becomes untouchable!
@FAZman23 I actually think that he has been pretty insecure lately, almost like depressed. Lately he's been feeling like he's not quite enough. That's why he said in free falling , thanks for making this good again. Battle studies is quite a sad album (not musically), he seems to feel his life is slipping away , mean while the other moments he feels the opposite, wich makes it quite scary I suppose.
@FAZman23 Of course, this show is just a few days after Battle Stuedies came out. Also I'm sure this isn't as soundchecked as Where The Light Is ;-). The shows I like best are from march 2010 and on, untill Keith Carlock replaced Steve in june or so.
@FAZman23 Also they need to turn his mic up. A bad mic can make the difference in ease & comfort for singing in your range. A good mic make whole concerts better in general.
I agree that the backing vox are a little to much here. BUT thats guitar solo WAS AMAZING!! I don't care if he only changes it a little bit every show. It's an awesome solo!
this belief is what we're fighting for....THIS BELIEF....!!!! yeaahhh :D
