  • Wes, this video would be ok if you would just edit your spin technique....C'mon man!!!

  • this guy is terrible. To aany new throwers who watch this video everything he said or did is wrong do not listen to this video find a new one.

  • Training ideas are alright, but to throw the shot put well you must work on technique, not just strength training. Optimal projection angle is not 45 degrees. Due to height of release and the mechanics of the human body, it is much lower. Simple explanation, you can bench press more than you can incline press. You can put more force on the shot at a lower angle. Do not try to replicate the techniques he tries to describe. Ever. I think he took a bunch of shot put terms and threw them together.

  • @yepperpepperski Aamazing he is not the only person who says to release at a 45 degree angle

  • Comment removed

  • his head looks like a shotput

  • our shotput state chapion was 158 pounds and threw 55 feet in 8th grade. This guys a fucknut

  • Forget this guy ^ can estimate for me a good distance for an amateur 14 year old throw? I can average roughly 9 metre, how can i improve?

  • @CHAZ666999 I'm younger than you and I'm a girl. I average 13-14 meters with a 4kilo weight. (The shot put)

All I can say is lift weights. DO IT. Nothing else will help. Be oldschool, because as someone said here, the record is from the 80s or 90s. Basically oldschool isn't fancy but it's real quality over quantity training.

Good luck, sorry for pretty late awnser :D

Stumbled over this video just now, because I want to improve too.

  • @SkewLT The focus really should be on technique when you are younger. I wouldn't recommend for anybody to start lifting weights before high school. And even then, weights are very important, but far from the only thing you need to focus on. Technique is extremely important.

There is a reason why world records were being broken back in the 70s and 80s, but it wasn't because of "oldschool" training. But yes, use Olympic lifts, train for power. That hasn't changed.

  • 0:00

  • this guys an idiot

  • ha ha ha fail. his shot put is 6 pounds. in fifth grade our schools shot put was 7 pounds. :)

  • this sport sucks

  • @cardinal7401 then why are you watching this?

  • lol...this guy really sucks...

  • no help @ all

  • you are a freaken retard.

  • l0l_i_feÊl_s0_lõÑëlÿ_t0Daÿ

  • when i was 10 and 11 i was ranked # 1 in the nation for 2 yrs straight in the shot and disc

  • this is dumb...im not strong, and im only 5 foot 7, but i have good techinque and im 4th in canada

  • okay im 6 foot 5 and i weigh 170 and its bull that you cant have good technique and less strength to be good cause i throw 48 feet with a 12 as a junior and i beat the bigger kids every time

  • your arms not high enough

  • MOVE THAT PIPE!!!

  • You're supposed to throw the shot no more than 42 degrees, NOT 45 degrees. Those 3 or 4 degrees can make a big difference. And you don't "block" with the arm, you rip it, creating more torque.

  • its called a shot not a shot put itself!

  • I sure hope nobody way paying attention to his demonstration on the spin because you don't start out with stepping back with your left leg you wrap the right leg around the left leg and step to the middle then you whip the left leg around getting into the power position then you push through at the 45 degree angle. He did have the 45 degree angle part correct though Good Lick. GoBucks

  • yeah... you can have excellent form but if your not strong your fucked... riiiight, thats why im the smallest/weakest thrower in the state yet im ranked first as a sophomore...good one lol

  • holy shit you have alot of videos

  • How does this have anything to do with training?

  • Wow I cant believe it either this guy was no shot putter stick to the weights chief let us coaches handle the hard stuff

  • your spin, sir, was despicable.

  • What is travving? 1:32

  • Worst effing video i have ever seen in my life...my sister is like 11th in the nation in throwing and watched her throw a ton. This guy is the worst trainer i have ever seen! and btw to everyone here..TECHNIQUE will you help you more than anything

  • are you on shrooms?

  • such a retard, die stange liegt da kaum fail

  • he is s funny he knows how to throw the shot put

  • bunch of trolls much

  • elbow up dude!

  • @Cooljs23 yeah! i get push ups if i dont keep my elbow up!

  • WORST throwing advice ever! Your form for glide and spin was just nasty, your spin was the worst I've ever seen. Try stepping over your left foot next time.

  • man this guy talks alot

  • Obviously not a shot putter. Next time try doing it right.

  • Terrible

  • What kind of spin was that??? terrible

  • the clean and jerk....this exercise is not necessarily done in that order

  • so it would seem everyone agrees this is bad info. im trying to teach myself to perform a decent shot put. could anyone send me some links to propper technique so i don't end up trying something like this. :)

  • @teamjinsoku just came onto this video and ure right its bad. sucks this guy gets this kind of facility and then spits out this garbage on 'shotput' training. i have a few vids on my page and am working on some more. check em out

  • dude you suck. get away from the shot put.. this is not for you :))))

  • Terrible technique

  • This is frightening!! There are better tech videos than this... do not base your throws off of this. I know there are beginners that may not be perfect, but do not show it if you can not do it properly. It will only promote bad habits and lack of knowledge to the event.

  • this is really poor, it involves zero training tips other than mentioning like 4 lifts well done sir, well done

  • Shoulder biomechanics actually reduce optimal angle to 43.

  • I dont see anything wrong with this video, explosiveness in olympic lifts will help with shot. Id add box jumps, and jump squats in there as well. He said somewhere around 45 degrees, keyword somewhere. Its also true, a weak guy with technique will never throw as far as a stronger guy with bad technique.

  • The appropriate angle is NOT 45 degrees.. Its more like 40 degrees.. If your not that tall, you might need to deliver in an angle of 41-42 degrees.. If the object had to land in same high as you deliver it., 45 degrees would be the best!.. But thats not the case..

  • he's wrong

  • sir great desciption.. but much u have ever threw ?

  • You just picture someone you hate

  • Ok how to TRAIN for shot...

He spent a full minuet just talking about what it is, and all this math shit

  • There is absolutely no fathomable reason for a rational human being to have thumbed this video up. I have died a little bit inside for having watched this video.

  • @TheGrammerNazi why dont u go make a better video and then talk shit?

  • is this at velocity

  • so, we all need to be physicists and mathematicians?

  • What a mess man. A minute-and-a-half into this you've made multiple errors. Like previously stated technique will beat strength most of the time, look at Nic Vena. The shot doesn't need to leave at 45 degrees, way too high. Current thinking is much lower like 38 degrees. Simply put, you did not achieve what the title states, how to train for the shot. You said do squats and olympic lifts, huh, really!?!

  • @gogoyoghurt123

Lol, I have no idea, apparently it was fine lol compared to the 5-6 metres that the others threw :S.

  • AHAHAHAHAHHAA

I WANNA SPIN LIKE THAT !!!!

  • this guy is extra dumb.... strength over technique???

  • The only thing he had right was about blocking...

45 degrees actually isn't the ideal angle either. In theory, 45 degree angle will yield the greatest component forces in horizontal and vertical directions, but the human body can't exert its fullest force at that angle without leaning back to an unnatural angle. 40 degrees is the ideal angle for shot put.

  • on 1:56 thats IS NOT how you spin

  • i throw 10m and im 6th grade

  • @dracostrike98 how heavy shot put though?

  • @Slime2112 16 pounds

  • @dracostrike98 Just wait till u get to high school

  • @canadianboyy14 who cares man?

  • holy shit...this channel has 138,810 videos.

  • @sk8a4l1fe nice job, but my friend threw 12m in grade 7. he's trying for the provincial record (which he just broke in gym class)

  • @Rej800 no one cares

  • wow, does he really know how to coach this?

  • @sk8a4l1fe i throw 3000000 million millimeters in shot put

  • Awesome shot put video. Here is a trailer about a shot put movie that's actually coming to theaters. watch?v=ERhIWSsGbFM

  • HAHAHA Spin fail

  • @turbocylinders27 how was that a fail!?!?!?!?!?!!!!

  • @naterox123 You joking right? that was the worst spin ive ever seen.

  • @naterox123 Becasue it sucked

  • @naterox123 it was horrible lol

  • Huh, didn't know you don't have to know anything at all about a subject to be an 'expert' on it. "Expert" Village Fails hard, once again.

  • LMAO fail rotation

  • For the glide you do not go straight back you go at a angle so you have space to turn for the throw.

  • @Mundile no, you go straight back with ur body facing the back of the ring so you're returning to the power position.

  • The thing is you have to have just as much strength as technique. With the shot put you can get away with less technique and more strength. In other events like the javelin and discus you need more technique than strength..its all about an equal balance of both.

  • @jphil31892 yea but a strong guy with a really good technique is going to be a lot better than the other strong guy with a bad technique. plus a not so strong guy with an amazing technique can do a better than the strong guy with a bad technique. however, your right, shot put does require less technique than discus and javelin.

  • I think I could explain brain surgery better than this guy explained throwing the shot, and I aint no brain surgeon.

  • I think I could explain brain surgery better than this guy explained throwing the shot, and I aint no brain surgeon.

  • I think I could explain brain surgery better than this guy explained throwing the shot, and I aint no brain surgeon.

  • i throw over 35ft. and im 12

  • @garciaefrain99 yea your shot is eight pounds

  • my best throw was14.83 meter and im 15

  • @damion711 my friend Shawn can throw over 17 feet and he's 14.

  • I stopped watching after, "Hi I'm Les Willie"

  • advice to anyone who wants to get better out there, eat lots and lots of high protein foods, (fish, chicken, drink milk, for like a pudding, have large quantities of low fat yoghurt) I have put on about 30 pounds of muscle in the last 4 months doing this. Secondly, do weight training, do workouts which are similar to a shot put action (like swimmers press, push ups), each exercise you do should be able to do only up to about 12 times to failure, if not then the weight is too light for you.

  • agree with the first part, but for what you say about lifting. no. The main lift that is needed for shot is power clean/ clean and jerk. high weight low reps like 5x3 or 6x2. secondly you want to do a lot of core and back work. explosiveness is essenital, core just helps use your whole body.

  • @Killur1def Soz ur right, its 1-6 reps for strength, 7-12 reps for body building and any higher than 12 for endurance. So 5 reps is good.

  • @sneakytanderson yeah man.

  • is this is good?

    im in the 8th grade

    and i throw a 8 pound shot 46 ft

  • yah im in 9th grade and i throw 40 ft with 8 lb. do you spin or glide/.

  • dude high school supposed to be 12lbs lol

  • @mgreen21854 thats pretty good compared to most kids i threw against in 8th grade. that would definitely win a meet. i wont state with a 51 ft throw

  • yea thats good, (I live in england, so its not 'grades for me') in year 10 (grade 9) i threw about the same with a 9 pound. I have been doing loadsa weights for a while now with lots of protein, so I am hoping to throw much further this year. I have put on about 30 pounds of muscle so far. I am now 6''4 and 217 pounds,Can't wait till shot put season lol, wish u luck as well.

  • did you get my last comment?

  • i weigh about 200 lbs and bench 245 and squat 315 and powerclean 205. I can throw the shotput about 35 to 36 on average. i'm not sure if its technique or power?

  • @arinjacobfinch i weigh 208 and bench 325 and squat 375 and power clean 225.. i throw the shot 43 ft... ur most likely all power ... work on your technique.. u first have 2 find what style ur best at..

  • 2:00 = gay

  • O and 56 kg is 123.5 pounds (lb)

  • I'm 56kg and can throw it 8.52 m (28 feet)

is that good for my size or not?

Had my first few throws today at p.e

  • Dont use expert village they are very bad.

  • i just started throwing im in seventh grade if any one has any advice id be really grateful

  • buy weights and use them

  • nice gym

  • @87PowerMan bad technique...

  • I have 203lb bench press, 309lb squat, 42ft with the 16lb, it's good the thrown proportional the maximals?I'm 18 years old

  • @Lanciatore91 WTF Man, I bench about 215 lb and squat like 340 lb and I only throw about 30 ft with a 10 lb shot and Im 16... Its all form brah, and I dont got the form

  • @davidthefat ur probably muscling the ball out... first of all make sure ur holding it ryte... it shouldnt be flat on ur palm! and make sure before u release it ur swinging your other arm back so that ur throwing side is fully extended...

  • @MrJerZBoi Today at my first real meet, I only threw 30 feet... AGAIN... Yea the shots all the way out on my fingers, on the part where majority of callouses form from lifting. I also got the foot reversal thing, not perfect, but getting there.

  • @davidthefat well thats a start... most people dont know this but when u release the ball ur chin should be pointing up.. almost towards the sky type thing... and ur neutral arm should be behind u when ur active arm is releasing the ball

  • @davidthefat you are quite weak..lol 215 bench..dont admit that in public man..lol thats a warm up..lol

  • @pantherafist Yea I am getting weaker too, damn, everyone else is catching up to me and all I am doing is staying the same or getting weaker, yea I am not bulking, so thats the problem

  • @davidthefat switch your workouts, use dumbells for 3 weeks and make sure you drink alota water and eat right, use good protein and creatine and you should improve...did not mean to sound like an ass, sorry.

  • if you can throw 50 feet in college, with a college shot we would love to see

  • At the time i started throwing i had been basically lifting for about a year and was at a 340 bench, 475 squat, and about a 475 strait leg deadlift, so ya i would say your strenght is good.

And for compensating with strength, I would say yes that would help tons in the beginning and then will only improve your throws as you improve technique. I first did power throws 39/40ft, and glide later 41/42ft, then end of year was at 45/46ft power and 49/50 glide, more strength+techinque=longer throws.

  • that's funny that you could lift that much in high school because I couldn't and I could throw 54 feet and 40 on the power.

  • hey man, it's interesting reading what you've written thanks for posting. but how strong are we talking here? i am a powerlifter and have never thrown the shot in my life, i recently really want to give it a go. i have only been training for powerlifting for a year now but i'm up to 400lb in squat and 500lb in deadlift. see i know its not great that i'm considering starting throwing at 18 but do you think compensating with a bit of strength will help? thanks

  • Ok, I have been reading a lot about how technique is more important that strength, and eventhough i do agree with those statements I also beleive that strenght is a vital ingredient when it comes to shot put. Although, one may be able to get by with just technique in highschool, but when it come to college shot, it is vital that a person has a good ballance between the two, strengh and technique. Otherwise you will be beat by the big strong athletes who you will be up against.

  • he dropped his shoulder in the power position...

  • my 1st year of track last season, i threw 33-6 from a standing throw. Is that a good start for moving into the glide this season?

  • Im 14 atm i threw a 5kg shot 14.32m

  • im 12 and i throw 11.50m with a 3.25kg

  • Technique is definitely more important than strength. I got beat by a guy half my size back in high school. Practice practice practice.

  • yea strenght is nothing.

i am only 145 pounds and i beat about 6 people who were all over 200

  • i got 1st year round in season then at state got 9th. had a terrible day to have my off day.

  • technique will beat strength 90% of the time this guy had it switched around

  • yup. i threw farther than the two strongest football players at my school

  • agree with a 12lb but 16 you could be wrong.

  • A geek throwing a shot.

  • This guy has really bad form however, you cant disreguard the value of strength. Last year Babbitt published an article in techniques magazine of the strength requirements to throw a shot 20 meters based on body weight and height. If you dont know who babbitt is, he was Reese Hoffa's coach at Georgia and one of the most well respected college coaches in the country. Obviously form is a large requirement but o is strength...to be elite.

  • expert village should check there so called *experts*

  • technique is everything mate

  • i dont care what this guy says, technique is everthing.

  • exactly... when I used to compete I was NOT strong in any sense and did absolutely ZERO weight training (did some strength training with medicine balls but mainly in the winter when the season was over and again, nothing major) but I had DECENT TECHNIQUE and even more importantly GREAT SPEED and I was ranked 4th in the UK at one point for my age group!

  • I would not encourage anyone to pay attention to this mans form. He is right about the strength training but for the love of god get a real shotput coach to help you with your form. lol

  • This guy knows.....NOTHING

  • im gonna shot put for the first time in the spring is it as hard as i think i is?

  • i threw shotput for years and this guy is shocking..

  • his form sucks anyone else notice that?

  • FAIL

  • Nice try on demonstrating how to throw Shot. The rotational technique doesn't look anything close to that. But being "experts" you should have known that. I know you don't think that it is relevant to how to train for shot, but you should know how Shot Putters apply force to the shot to train for it.

You are correct that Olympic lifts are the best strength training exercise. Squats, Plyometrics and medicine ball work are also effective. Shoulder press, I don't think would be as effective.

  • Okay, I want to be able to be a contender in my high school's JV track team this year in the Shot Put. I know I wont make it on the Varsity team this year so Im shooting to be able to "slug it out" sorta speak in the JV meets. How far should I be able to throw to do so??

  • why do kids see a shot video and post their stats, thinking people care?

  • i throw the 12lb shout and the 1/5 disc

  • yea im a freshmen i throw shout and disc i throw 48 in shout and 147 in disc im trainging for the jr olympics now in iowa and i dont have a coach

  • i made it to the national championship in iowa but didnt get to go, my pr is 47ft in shot and im a freshman.we might of been throwing against each other if i would of went

  • i throw the 12lb about 12.50to 13.00 average but pr is 13.97 in the 9th grade

  • i throw a 5 kg shot around 13.50 meters and been training without a coach or doing wieghts

  • thats pretty good, maybe you should find a coach then

  • His spin was wrong.

  • i'm in 8th grad and can throw a 12 pound shot put like 12 metres

  • I'm in 2nd grade and I can throw a 16 lb shot 100 feet, look at me!!! I want attention!!1!!

  • How far should a 7th grader be able to throw a 16pound shot put. See I throw it about 22 feet...is that good at all? Im serious so if it is please dont think im just trying to stick my chest out here.

Someone just tell me if thats any good or not.

  • no one cares how far you throw

  • Im sorry, how does that answer my question? I even said I wasnt trying to stick out my chest other people are saying how much they can throw on here so I figured it was something people did. So why is it me that you came after?

  • why are u even trying to throw a 16lber in 7th grade.

  • well it was my dad's old shot put and I couldn't find a place that sold a lighter shot put so I figured...why not try throwing it?

  • a 7th grader should not be throwing a 16lb shot, That is college/world standard. I throw that and I am at 11.5 meters (about 37 feet or so).

If you are serious look into getting a 12 lb, that is what you'll use in High school. Although using the 16 lb every now and then to train will prob help your performance.

Also, if you can throw the 16, 22ft when you use the HS shot you will probably see 30 ft or so.

  • You are VERY good, but switch to a smaller shot, as you may get hurt with the 16 lb. shot.

  • ok first of all, it is called a SHOT. the PUT part is the action. you put the shot. the ball isn't a shot put. you actually can throw far if you have good technique and you aren't very strong. the boys at my regional laughed at me when I told them what my bench max was, and I won.

  • The top elite throwers put close to 70m and they bench around 600. HS throwers who bench around 300 tend to put the 12 lb shot 40-48 feet. The correlation between strength and put is pretty high, so if you throw very well for your strength, good for you, but it is not good advice to tell kids they can put the shot without a base of a lot of power.

  • I bench 185 and throw 48

  • That gives me hope =) is that for 10,6,3 or 1?
