  • The most powerful song ever performed.

  • love it, beautiful job by all.

  • beautiful job by all.

  • If you thought you didn't like folk music listening to these Atlantic Sessions must surely change your mind. Some if not most of the greatest folk musicians in the western world got together here and if I believed in gods I would thank them from the bottom of my heart. Failing that I bow to the god Youtube, lol.

  • @Lucidles Amen on that i wish i knew who the short black hair lady was she has a vioce

  • @rootbeer1957 Michelle Wright is the lady with the short black hair . Great performance :)

  • @Lucidles folks that don't like this don't like music

  • further more u do have a right to your opinion. i am a war veteran & I believe that. Everyone does. You seek Iris's sites to bitch about something all you have to do is NOT listen to. i do believe that you are a lawyer, not a compliment. One of these assholes that says everyone hates us until they need us. it's you dicks that made and continue to make, the system so convoluted that litigation can't have simple straight forward language, the real crime is the increased made up need for shysters

  • lets all emulate the miserable shithead grinch. go to the site of music you hate and make sure you claim,a lofty profession to heighten your so called opinion(of course he did fail at that, he claims to be of the lowest profession, a lawyer) Go to the sites of some music or artist you would never seek to listen to than tell everyone how much what they like sucks. Your no more than an asshole, that's all. Nothing you can say alters u have no reason to do this except to act like a vapid snob

  • Well, we know at least five people who gave this video a thumbs-down are not passing "Go" and are going directly to hell.

  • @402maypo,

What cost "True Grit" the best picture was its ending. As I sat there waiting for some great truth in life, some meaning to her hardship & lost arm, some epic finish to this excellent movie, or even a nugget of wisdom, I got the biggest anti-climax, worthless ending since Monty Python's "Holy Grail".

I love Iris DeMint's voice. This song is ok, but her song "Let The Mystery Be" is melodic brilliance.

  • Michelle Wright and Mairede you $#*&.

  • Other than Iris Dement who are the other women in this video ie. the Blond, the Brunet in Blue, the one playing guitar to the far right of the screen?

I love these Atlantic sessions, fantastic musicians.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Listening to Angels we are! So very, very fine, all.

My love to Lady Michelle, Iris and the very, very Mairead. (hope i got it right)

    THE BEST

  • I admire these women so much. Yeah!!!

  • I admire these women so much

  • Iris Dement is my favorite female singer, Then add Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh and Michelle Wright....WOW. Great Job.

  • To tomtscotland.....I was born in Glasgow @ Parkhead Cross ( actually 1251 Duke St ) and over here my Dad was the leader of the band for all our Scottish parties and sing alongs as he played the accordian, piano and organ by ear and in the key you were singing. And he just passed away a week ago @ 85, he WAS the leader of the band and I'll miss him so....and Iris Dement and these songs bring back memories of our Scottish parties....Jim Archer

  • That incredible natural sound of Iris Dement, so beautiful and sincere.

  • @thegrinchl7 ...and the rest of the audience was loving it. Why so upset, dude? That's why there's chocolate and vanilla. Iris is VERY highly regarded in the biz.

  • @thegrinchl7 You got no taste for bluegrass man!!! Your ignorance in music shows.

  • @402maypo - I love Bluegrass music. I hate Iris Dement's voice. More importantly, she damn near single handedly destroyed the Cohen Brother's "True Grit" with her NAZAL HONK at the end of the film. There is talk around Hollywood that it was this discordant ending which cost True Grit an Academy Award and Golden Globe for "Best Picture".

  • @thegrinchl7 I doubt the Cohen Bros could care less. She's got one powerful voice even if it is a touch awkward.

  • No need to miss any of these wonderful sessions as they are still available on DVD and CD. Just go to Amazon or Play and type in "Transatlantic Sessions". I've been addicted to this cross-over of Gaelic and Americana ever since Donal Lunny's excellent TV series "Bringing It All Back Home" first shown in the early 90s.

  • This is such an all star assemblage of musical talent, I can't imagine they recorded only 1 song. Anyone know if there are other videos from this session floating around on YouTube?

  • Stunning. What a great line up. Thank you for posting. =)

  • Incredible.

  • Old friends.

I love me Ladies; Michelle, Mairead and Iris.

    So fine they are.

  • Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh's voice just wasn't up to this company. I love Altan, but her singing isn't their strong point.

  • A most beautiful and inspirational post. Than you so much for this upload. It is amazing.

  • STUMBLED ACROSS THIS VID BY ACCIDENT. HAVE HEARD MANY VERSIONS

OF THIS SONG INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL. THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST. SIMPLY

    BEAUTIFUL!

  • Michelle and Mairead are not Iris' sisters.

This was recorded in the United Kingdom, in the 90's as the Transatlantic Sessions. The music produced from this gathering is truly remarkable and very, very good.

The very best of folk, country, bluegrass, and home music recorded these sounds.

  • The lady on the guitar players right is Iris Dement a songwriter from Arkansas, USA. Her songs are soulful and country. This obviously isn't one of her tunes. The other ladies could be her sisters, especially the the one playing the guitar. She has a website.

  • KInd of a masterpiece, I'd say.

  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful.

  • Know how you find a treasure every now and again on this u-tube thing? well here is one. Love it!!

  • just wonderful !!

  • Masz stuprocentową rację muzyka jest naprawdę fantastyczna, chwyta za serce, wspaniała aranżacja i wykonanie profesjonalne, czysty śpiew. Aż miło się tego słucha. Uwielbiam ten rodzaj muzyki Westernowej.:))

  • I second that sentiment!

  • This spirited performance touches every time. Fine musiciens.

  • Fantastic.... Gripping!!

  • The blend of the fiddles whine, the guitars, accordian, & Mandolin with the rich roots harmony of the girls powerful voices reaches down past your gizzard into your very being and grips your soul.

  • unbelievable

  • Appalachian music comes from the Scottish immigrants who settled that land. We owe an enormous debt to those men and women.

  • It is derived from various European and African influences, including English ballads, Irish and Scottish traditional music (especially fiddle music), religious hymns, and African-American blues.

  • @McCluneys That would be Scots/Irish immigrants.

  • @McCluneys proud to come from such rich heritage. folks who believed that when things got tough, put your head down and work harder than the rest to get ahead.

    beautiful music!

  • Unbelievable what a sound and recording

  • the TransAtlantic Sessions are well known.

    this is some serious music.

  • This is very much in the tradition of Appalachian bluegrass and it. is. beautiful. In this session are the best of the best from both sides of the big pond. As I commented earlier to another video, this is a gathering of legends. F.Y.I. this session includes one of the great fiddle players of all time, Aly Bain.

  • Wow what voices! :-)

  • great stuff ,i bought sessions1+3 complete on amazon pure joy.i don't know what happened to sessions2 it seems to have disappeared.

  • Love the lefty mandolin player. That's a first for me!

  • That's Donal Lunny.

    He's is playing a bouzouki.

  • Excellent recording - whoever set up the mics did a great job - able to hear every voice. It's all about the harmony - Just great!

  • Another winner Tom. Five big stars.

  • Michelle, Mairead and Iris.

So good but so long ago. You Ladies are the best!

  • wow this 3 ladies can harmonize... reminds me of Dolly parton, Linda Rhonstad, and Emmylou Harris from the trio Cd's... these woman should record together

  • I stood in a room with 20 of us singing a rousing version of the song last year.

    Our conductor? Mr. Danny Thompson.

  • Holy crap... that is a rediclously nice version of this song.

  • Absolutely Awesome! I'm amazed by the talent.

  • best version Ive found on here so far

  • Very nice recording - awesome rendition. Love the harmonies. Please feel free to check out my video response of a 17 year old who wanted to record her own version as a tribute to Maybelle Carter. It's awesome also.

  • So Beautifull!!

    Thank You!

  • Just the best its the best i have ever heard by far 5******

  • The first series - in which this features - is now available on DVD!

  • where and how much?

  • I have tried to find (buy) this and all I get is that it is no longer available. Does anyone have a copy?

  • Apparently I can't post web addresses! I've tried a few times, initially in response to ojolsen below, but the comment never shows up.

Try Googling Music Scotland, or go to Amazon UK - both of those still have the DVD in stock (though Amazon have it wrongly listed under Audio!).

  • But NOTE- dvd video is PAL (Eur) standard.

Can be converted to NTSC (US, Japan) via software- DVDShrink & ConvertXtoDVD, then written to DVD-R(W). BTDT

  • take me home Lord.

  • I can't play and I can't sing, but thank God I can appreciate. I appreciate the straight forward, no frill performance on this video. It just goes to show, true talent doesn't have to rely on anything flashy or gimmicky. The sheer talent of these women just knocks me out.

  • Well done.

    Brother Don

  • Iris Dement is a wonderful, expressive singer. I saw her with the great John Prine some years ago. That being said, I've heard from several sources that she's an egotistical, selfish bitch. That's OK. I love the artistry, not the artist.

  • Never heard such- "egotistical", etc. Dunno. Can't know. So, irrelevant.

Just from seeing her live, I'd have to offer an opinion: deeply-rooted, beautiful. Wish there were more like her. Maybe I'm prejudiced- that voice!

  • Wow, Trockout, I have never, ever heard anything like that at all, from anyone, anywhere. Quite the opposite, rather.

  • awesome, should be compusory listening in every school.

  • This is one of the best versions of this song I've ever heard. Is there a CD or download available somewhere? I've searched via google for the first Transatlantic Session, and I can't find it anywhere. I can't find it in iTunes either. Thanks!

  • Very moving.

  • What year was this video shot?

  • I think it was first shown on TV in 1995.

  • Transatlantic Session Vol.1 1965/1996

  • Only thing this video is missing is Johnny Cash.

  • To the guy who wondered if Iris was singing out of key, that's called harmony...

  • dinnerbucket9: ditto. Iris is an absolute angel.

  • I never tire of hearing or singing this great old song!

    Nice video. 5 stars!

  • No voice better expresses the soul of country music than that of Ms. Dement. Moreover, it is mine to take take personal offense at any comments that indicate otherwise. Finally, I know that her voice is the one I want echoing off my tombstone when the great and lasting moment comes. Thank you very much.

  • sounds like she's singing out of key?

  • Where there is good music Donal Lunny will be present.

  • Absolutly beautiful.

  • Wow! Thanks Tom T Scotland! What a great rendition!

  • c'est un tres beau video, les filles chantent tres bien avec Michelle wright

  • this song makes happy..again!

  • Maired's voice is so irish in comparison to Michelle and Iris :-) but they are wonderful, all of them

  • Is Maire the blond woman singing?

If so: I love her almost "astmatic touch".

Can you give me her full name so that I can google further...?!

    tnx

  • google with "Altan" that's her band. I don't know her full name. It is one of the long Irish ones.

  • thanks, her name seems to be Mary Mooney, but I'm not for sure

  • No I'm wrong, Mary Mooeney seems to be a former Fianna Feil politician

  • Her name is Iris Dement

  • Is Maire the blond woman singing?

Is so: I love her almost "astmatic touch".

Can you give me her fulle name so that I can google further...?!

    tnx

  • Oh I'm such a airhead ... her name is in the "about the video"-Box

    it's Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh

but I think Mhaonaigh is the gaelic spelling for "Mooney". You should check out Altan's song "Dulaman" it's great singing

  • Le blond, elle s'appelle Iris DeMent.

  • Non, mon ami, elle s'appelle Mairead. Iris is the brunette who I'd never mistake for anyone else. Ever.

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!! Put them on the Opry! One of the best renditions there is!

  • WOW!! THESE FOLKS NEED TO TOUR HERE IN THE UNITED STATES FOLKS HERE WOULD LOVE'EM. It does not get any better than this. GREAT JOB!!!!!!

  • this is one of my favourite songs and i can't believe i have found it again my accident!! thank you again tomt/ you have mad my night!!!

  • Such joy and heart and humility and import....the agnostic bows his head and prays.

  • purity personified

  • Brilliant ;-)

  • The blonde lady on the right is Mairead Ni Mhoiniagh (Mary Mooney) of the Irish music group "Altan."

  • Great ! One of the big roots in christian life ! A sermon and a key question for every familymember ! Lord´s Tramp , Matthew Majabacka

  • Great, one of the big roots in christian life ! A sermon and a key question for familymembers ! Lord´s Tramp, Matthew Majabacka

  • hehe thanks to Zen for showing me this - one of my faves!

  • This is the best version I've ever seen of one of my favourite songs. Thanks for posting.

  • excellent version. But as the comment below says, who are these people? Are they actually so famous that I should be hanging my head in shame not recognising them?

  • No need to hang your head in shame - these artists rarely get exposure on British TV or radio.

  • This is FANTASTIC!!!

I just love the music and the group playing.

    Could you identify the players?

  • Just click on more - top right of screen.

Agree this is a great version - this was from a series called Transatlantic Sessions originally broadcast by BBC Scotland - myself and others have uploaded quite a number of these.

  • @tomtscotland Tom, were there other recordings, which you've posted on YouTube, from this gathering of musical giants? I can't imagine putting those people in the same room & not filming a couple more songs.

  • @WilliamCerf the acordian player is Phil Cunningham And the second fiddle player in the video is Aly Bain . I had the opportunity to see both of them a few yrs back and experience I won't soon forget!!!!
